Yup. Sure did. His name was Pete. Peter, actually. And his DOC number was from way back in the late 70’s, one of the first inmates in my state to be convicted of a felony when the new numbering system was put in place. He had barbed-wire tattooed around his neck and a scar on his back from when he got shot while trying to escape during a prison riot shortly after he got to prison. Pete was no joke, not an inmate, but a convict. He was Hispanic and had connections to all sorts of interesting people. He was all muscle and people feared him. And I had no idea what I was in for the day I walked out of RDU (Reception and Diagnostic Unit, Unit 7) and into 11-House, on A-tier, Cell 22, right by the goddamn bathroom. To say we were the “Odd Couple” would be an understatement since I was a smaller, white kid (gay to boot), with a couple of years to do and he was this hardcore, convict doing time for attempted escape, aggravated battery on certain personnel, and attempted murder.So, I settled in.Immediately upon entering the cell, I sat down and provided my paperwork so Pete would know I wasn’t a child molester or a rat. That out of the way, I started to put my stuff into my locker and set up my radio and TV. I stayed quiet and to myself and only initiated conversation about an hour later when I asked him if he would like a cup of coffee. He said “sure” and we started talking. You have to remember that you’re sharing living space, albeit a very cramped, tight one, with another human being and that cellies usually have an understanding about time out of the cell, time needed to take care of personal things, what channels to watch, etc..But back to your question: Pete was a bully. A big one.Pete was the kind of bully you didn’t want to live with…If you were a bully.That’s right, Pete bullied the bullies.I watched this guy like lay waste to so many of the douchbag kids who would go around and pick on other inmates. He took no shit from anyone and was the example of how to carry yourself in prison. Ha, I remember standing all cramped by the door one morning waiting for breakfast just chatting with some other guys when one of those douchebag kids walked up to this other dude and just started punking this guy. Dude didn’t do anything wrong, was being standup and solid, and this piece-of-shit kid was all up in his face, being a complete dick. Well, like I said, our cell was right next to the bathroom and Pete came out (would have anyway), said nothing to homeboy and laid him on the sink. One punch. Told him to arrange to be moving his ass off the tier and preferably to another unit. We got back from chow and homeboy was gone. There was no need for a discussion cause things would have gotten much worse for that asshole.I loved Pete. He eventually got out and we talked a bit several years ago. I think he moved away but for the whole time I was locked up there on the Yard, Pete was my cellie and he was a bully. And a goddamn good man.MS
