PDF Editor FAQ

What do professors look for while selecting PhD students?

I thought the existing answers already covered this fairly well… But to answer the A2As, I’ll see if I can add something. From a practical perspective, graduate admissions varies significantly across departments. Some departments have a central committee that takes fairly little input from faculty, and generates an incoming pool with the “best” students. Faculty then choose/get matched with students from that pool. Other departments have more transparency and less centralized control, where many faculty can give direct and specific input to the committee. As for what each faculty looks for, obviously it varies quite a bit. Many don’t see grad admissions as a key priority, and they are happy to choose from the pool of incoming students once the admissions process is through. Others, including myself, actively engage in the process to try to find the best student applicant from a larger pool of submitted applications. My personal take on specific criteria, in order from “absolutely critical” to “would be nice to have”:They have to be able to communicate. I can’t work with students who don’t/can’t share their ideas with me in a clear way. So I try to make sure that students I target can both speak their ideas (students too shy to even speak present a problem) and organize their thoughts in a clear and lucid manner (this is nontrivial for most undergraduates). Language skills are also important. Students must be able to present ideas clearly in English, regardless of their native language. Note that clearly does not mean fancy, SAT words, just clear and simple vocabulary will suffice. They are willing to learn. Often I see students who, by virtue of their past successes, have an overinflated sense of themselves. They are often very stubborn and close-minded to the point of not listening to ideas that contradict their own. They have to have something that drives them, whether you call it passion, desire, competitiveness, ambition. I want students who want a PhD badly enough that they are willing to make sacrifices as necessary. Sometimes that means skipping a weekend hiking trip to finish up a project, and sometimes it means working late into the night for a big paper deadline.Related to #2, they should not be too sensitive to failure. Lots of young adults define themselves by what they think others think of them. So failure weighs heavily on them. But every PhD has ups and downs, and no one is immune. A student who can separate failures from their self-esteem, and whose ego is not easily bruised, will do better.Students need to be able to work with others. I always work with 3–4 students on each project and our lab is very collaborative and social. Someone who has trouble getting along with others will not do well in my lab. Finally, this one is just a bonus, but a fun personality and ability to appreciate snarky jokes are great. I have a pretty dry/sarcastic sense of humor, and a PhD student who can tolerate or even enjoy it will have more fun in my lab.

Why don't some American PhD students realize that it takes a much greater effort and more sacrifices for international PhD students to come to the USA to pursue their PhD?

I am an international PhD student currently studying in Australia. I just started my second year as a PhD student in Melbourne.Sometimes I do feel sad and weak because I feel that other students especially local students and students from English speaking countries are really excellent at what they are doing. They are 100% confident when they are giving presentations. They can write beautiful articles. They can read papers a hundred times faster than me ---- to be honest, reading paper is still hard for me. Sometimes I feel anxious and frustrated when I am reading journal papers. They are good at social events. Most importantly, they are happy. They can express themselves freely with each other but most of the time I can not understand what they are talking about. My lab colleagues are very friendly, and I believe I have the best supervisor in the world. However, I still feel unhappy and under great pressure in the lab because I know I am not good enough compared with other team mates. But really I do not want them to empathize me. Why should they?Instead of worried about why people do not understand me, I worried more about do I know my projects well? Did I do enough work? Can I improve my language skills?I know that I am not the only student in the lab who has an international background. If other people can do better, then sure there are no excuses for me to seek other people's empathy. There simply is no time for me to feel sorry about myself. There is a saying in China: "Don't feel sorry for yourself because that is the deed of a coward."Another saying that I want to share with you is what Confucius said thousands of years ago: "I will not be afflicted at men's not knowing me; I will be afflicted that I do not know men. "Fake it until you make it. Be brave. I believe that everything will just be fine in the future. If you feel bad because you are not satisfied about yourself, trust me there are lots of people just like you.I hope my experience can help you.

What are some tools and website that every new PhD student should know?

You have to know a good tool of data processing. During your experiments you have at some point to analyse data and make a graphic representation of it. If R programming (or Python) is too much for you, then you have to know at least Excel. Have a good knowledge of Excel is must for most of new PhD students. This would imply that you know good statistics at least descriptive statistics. Here is a good course on that Introduction to Statistics: Descriptive StatisticsAs a PhD you need to write your results and publish your results. A good tool online for that purpose is Overleaf. Overleaf: Real-time Collaborative Writing and Publishing Tools with Integrated PDF Preview . To use it you have to know Latex markup language so this is also something you want to learn.Presenting your results by using a power point presentation is aslo a skill that every PhD student must have. Not always this part is easy, specially if you dont master good fluent English or if you are an introvert and dont like that much to talk in front of other researchers. A good online tool for that is Presentation Software | Online Presentation Tools | Prezi
