My children go to a “Hogwarts like” school. Not in the sense of teaching magic, but in the sense of looking as follows:That’s their actual school….When my daughter entered the “sixth form” (that’s to say, was about 16), there was an extra form for parents to fill in.That form was a consent form for her to be served wine at school events.The school are VERY serious about ensuring that only children whose parents / guardians have given consent are served alcohol…… but the age is 16, not 18.

I’m going to say this as someone who is still in secondary school (sixth form) , not a member of authority , or someone with statistical knowledge.We don’t have much/any sexual education in our schools.I learnt more about sex and our bodies in primary school then i did in the whole of my secondary education phase.In my time at my secondary school between year 10 and year 11 there where 4 pregnancies . in my year group.The age of consent in the UK is 16 , i am 17 and we didn’t learn how to put on condoms , what contraceptives are available and where to get them from ect . Boys in our school got virtually no sexual advice , all the girls got was a talk on periods in year 8.It’s a joke.Sex is considered so taboo , yet it is legal past year 11. Teenagers explore , that’s what we do.Being taught about safe sexual practices and what to do in a scenario where you don’t want to do something , or what to do if you get pregnant is not something that is on our curriculums. And it’s frustrating because not learning about sex , means not learning about our bodies.The boys don’t learn anything about the girls bodies , and vice versa ; the only way they learn is through porn and google searched , which brings about a whole new set of problems when faced with reality.Things like periods are not discussed at all.In other countries(western european) , despite having ages of consent lower than ours , they have lower rates of teen pregnancies.this map (Prevalence of teenage pregnancy - Wikipedia) shows how dark the UK is in comparison to france (has age of consent :15 ) and Italy (age of consent :14)(Ages of consent in Europe - Wikipedia)why?(from the independent article) As Siebe Heutzepeter, headteacher of De Burght school in Amsterdam, puts it: "The English are embarrassed to talk about sex. They are too squeamish. Here adults and children are better educated. It would be unthinkable for a Dutch parent to withdraw their child from sex education.—"There is no point in telling children just to say 'no' – this is a liberal country: you need to tell them why they are saying 'no' and when to say 'yes'.He has a good point.We are to squeamish and prim to educate our population , both male and female (and other ) on sex and sexual relations.It’s ridiculous and it needs to change.
