How do Liberals/Democrats remember the President Reagan years?

Reagan was one of the worst presidents we have seen in modern times. He waged illegal wars in Central America throughout most of his 2 terms. Permission to intervene in nations like El Salvador and Nicaragua was never sanctioned by the US Congress, but just like Trump doesn’t care about what Congress says, Reagan didn’t care either, and he did serious damage to many nations in Central America. (We are now reaping the consequences of our actions taken under Reagan in this region).Of course, as congress did not provide funding for military actions in Central America, he needed to get his money from somewhere, and he did this by selling weapons, again, illegally, to the nation of Iran. The money he took from Iran, for his supply of weapons, was used to assist in aiding the Nicaraguan death-squads known as the “Contra rebels.” Hence the terming of the scandal, The Iran-Contra Arms Scandal. The largest scoundrel of this scandal would emerge as Col. Oliver North, who was charged with 16 felonies. “North was convicted May 4, 1989 of three charges: accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and destruction of documents.” Sounds very much like the Trump years, doesn’t it?Of course Reagan was never convicted, although he did testify when called upon (unlike Donald Trump). Reagan is credited with creation of the legal defense of simply forgetting everything. If you forget things, it cannot be considered perjury. In all, according to the Chicago Tribune, “Reagan said ''I don`t recall'' or ''I can’t remember'' 88 times in the eight hours of testimony taken Feb. 16-17 in Los Angeles.” Again, this is similar to the current predicament of Donald Trump who, in written testimony to Robert Mueller, said he couldn’t recall or didn’t remember at least 37 times in his response to 10 questions! This method of avoiding perjury is now a favorite of many GOP scoundrels. One more thing on Iran Contra; Reagan was allied with Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq throughout his presidency. He sold Iraq chemical weapons and lent them much military support in the Iran / Iraq War. At the same time he was arming Iraq, he was also selling arms to Iran, and this should tell us quite a lot about his ethical and moral character. This was a brutal war that killed tens of thousands; Iraq had even used the chemical weapons that were supplied by Reagan on Iranian soldiers. He also used these chemical weapons on his own population. I do not know enough about history to say that others have not sold weapons to both sides in an armed conflict, but as one who is concerned with ethics, I must say that anyone that would sell arms to both sides in an armed conflict is ethically and morally compromised. Reagan is looked upon as a great leader by the white evangelicals of today, but I believe this is simply because many do not know or understand the evils that he was involved in.Many present day conservatives like to think of Reagan as a tough president who is responsible for “tearing down the Iron Curtain,” but this too is a fallacy. At least the concept that Reagan was a strong defensive president is a fallacy. In fact, when the US Marine Base in Lebanon was bombed, which lead to the death of 241 US Marines, Ronald Reagan didn’t do a thing! He didn’t respond with a military strike, he didn’t respond with anything of note. The Benghazi scandal, which lasted for more than four years, and led to zero indictments was set in motion over the death of four Americans. One can only imagine what the reaction of the GOP would have been if an attack like the Lebanon attack happened on Obama’s watch. Thus, the notion that Reagan was strong on defense is an absurd revision of history, and it doesn’t come close to the reality of the times.Another thing Reagan did was, he more than tripled the national debt! Again, we have the GOP and the republicans of today praising Reagan for the “great economy” he gave us, but they never mention that Reagan was termed “the credit card president,” and he said many times that “debt is good.” Reagan is the first president that really pushed the American economy from a manufacturing to a service economy. It is ironic that so many in the rust-belt voted for Trump because he was going to “bring back the manufacturing jobs” when it was their boy Ronald Reagan who sent them overseas in the first place. Between 1970 and 1990 (a period where you have 4 years of a democratic president, Jimmy Carter, and the other 16 years filled by Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush) saw the steel supplied by the US to the world market drop from 20 percent to 12 percent. In this same time period, the employment in the steel industry dropped from 400,000 to 120,000. I know it is the great republican pastime to blame all of the suffering of this era on Jimmy Carter, but it is not very realistic. It is more realistic to put 80 percent of the blame on the republicans that were in power 80 percent of the time during this era. Ronald Reagan certainly deserves a good portion of the blame, as he explicitly stated that a service industry was preferable to a manufacturing industry. One more thing on Reagan. He really opened up the war on the poor. He spread a lie about a woman in Chicago that was supposed to have taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in welfare (which is untrue), and coined the term “welfare queen.” This is what started a serious push for reforms on welfare that only made the life of the impoverished more difficult. He also can be credited for a major increase in spending in the “War on Drugs,” which has probably lead to the ruin of more American lives than did the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Again, the poor were more adversely affected than the rich, as penalties for crack were much harsher than penalties for possession of the same quantity of powder cocaine. Institutional racism flourished under Reagan, and sadly, many of his policies continue to this day.Perhaps the biggest failure of his administration was that failure to end the nuclear arms race. He was provided a serious opportunity to end the nuclear arms race, and end nuclear proliferation with Russia’s leader, Mikal Gorbachev. I will give Reagan credit, where credit is due, and he did reach a treaty with Gorbachev in 1987 that led to the destruction of middle range nuclear weapons with a treaty that led to the combined destruction of 4538 middle range nuclear weapons, but Gorbachev wanted to go much further, and Reagan, if he were truly a great president, could have made much greater strides in our efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons.Sadly, I have to bring Donald Trump into this essay one more time, because, “on Feb. 1, 2019, the Trump administration announced that it planned to withdraw from the treaty (that Reagan and Gorbachev signed in 1987). On the following day, Russian President Vladimir Putin followed suit.” So, what little gains that were made by Reagan, and they were only little gains, have now been thrown into the trash bin by Donald Trump. (Did Trump realize this was not an Obama treaty, but rather a treaty signed by Ronald Reagan, the true God of the GOP?).I could go on and on, but I must refrain. I close in saying that Ronald Reagan was an average president, at best, and he was not a very intelligent person. He was the first “celebrity leader.” The Republican Party, for some reason, is awed by celebrities. Fortunately, the democratic party prefers policy wonks to celebrities, but they are more difficult to elect, as they lack that natural verve a celebrity provides for when on camera.I will leave websites that I have referenced in the above paragraphs.https://fas.org/irp/offdocs/walsh/summpros.htmREAGAN HAZY ON IRAN-CONTRAhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/i-have-no-recollection-trump-turned-to-familiar-refrain-in-response-to-mueller-questions/2019/04/19/7230817c-62bc-11e9-9ff2-abc984dc9eec_story.htmlBeirut Marine Barracks Bombing Fast FactsRust Belt | Encyclopedia.comGorbachev calls for nuclear weapons treaty, Feb. 28, 1987

How many other people are there like me who can no longer have a civil discussion with Donald Trump critics?

It was that tip that spawned the Russian investigation, not anything that the Clinton campaign did.Trump Again Falsely Claims Russia Investigation Started With Steele DossierAs a follow-up some Quora readers have commented to me that FactCheck.org and other similar websites are wrong. I ask for examples. I’m told, “No examples are needed. Ask me if he ever returned to post one example, let alone a “list.”Anyway, here is my response:The reason why TrumpFans refuse to share examples of errors in FactCheck, etc.. . . is not so much that they are lazy (after all, it takes lots of energy to retweet Trump’s missives day after day without a rest), but I think there’s a fundamental disregard for logical discourse among Trump’s disciples. On the most popular Trump Reddit forum, known as r/The_Donald, Trump is referred to as GEOTUS, i.e. “God Emperor of the United States.” So, how can a person respond to such logic?Trump is King because God made him so. End of discussion, and no further proof is needed. Trump True Believers would not question Trump any more than they’d question King David’s Psalms in the Bible. There is no place for facts or reliable data in such a discussion.
