PDF Editor FAQ
Why is Europe not interfering in the Turkey-Holland crisis at this moment?
I’m Dutch. Today, strong support for the Dutch position was voiced by the German, Danish and Austrian government, as well as by mainstream news media such as BBC and the French papers. But “interference” is not needed? There is not really a crisis either. Just a lot of shouting. First calling today’s Dutch and German people Nazis and then still trying to organize public campaign events for a foreign election without permission was a dumb idea. Explicitly forbidden in Turkey itself also, by the way. With far worse consequences for the disobedient, I think. But perhaps it serves electoral purposes over there.I worry about Turkey’s future, not ours.
Is the USA more respected now (with Trump) than when Obama was president?
I regularly read six newspapers, three US and three foreign. The foreign papers I read are de Volkskrant (Dutch), Frankfurter Allgemeine (German) and Le Monde (French) I can assure you, NONE of the foreign papers have ever reported anything favorably about the current leadership of this great country.EVERY citizen in each of these countries recognize the Drumpf administration for what it is - a cabal, in it to better themselves. It’s fascinating to me that 35% of current American voters apparently cannot see thisUPDATE:I’ve spoken to several friends of mine who voted for Trump. Everyone I spoke to told me they think he is a disgrace. They used words like “asshole,” “jerk,” “embarrassment,” “I hate him,” and others. This was followed immediately by “I’d vote for him again.” Holy SHIT!
As a Russian, what was your culture shock when visiting Italy?
The beauty of the everyday language.I started to study Italian when I entered the University, at the age of 17. I studied it for four years. Moreover, I wrote a diploma work on Italian history - Florentine Diplomacy in France in the years 1494–1512. To be able to write this paper, I had to read thousands of various texts in Renaissance Italian and a number of history monographs. Thus, when I graduated, I knew the language quite well, despite never having been to Italy, despite never having spoken with an Italian. I knew Renaissance Italian slightly better than modern Italian but I could easily read, write or speak both. I also knew every village in Tuscany and every street in Florence - how they were in the Renaissance. And then, finally, in May 2003, aged 24, I visited Italy for the first time. My first Italian city was Florence, that I already knew so well. I took a bus.It was crowded and I heard many conversations. I could understand everything. And I could not believe it. People discussed their children, their pets, their work, their health issues, their plans. Everyday life. And they discussed it in Italian. In a language so beautiful that tears came into my eyes. I just could not believe that things so ordinary can be discussed in a language so fantastic. After many visits to Italy, I am no more surprised that one can discuss one’s dog or one’s bowels in Italian. I am still mesmerized by the language, though. When I speak French, I have a feeling that I am dancing waltz in a beautiful hall with marble columns. When I speak Italian, the happiness is so intense… it is like making love, really.
