PDF Editor FAQ

Which two pictures, when compared, best capture the difference between Obama and Trump for you?

I love to dance. I go dancing every so often. I have watched a lot of couples dancing. The above photos show both presidents at their inaugural dance. Neither couple are particularly accomplished dancers, but that is not the point. In the first picture, we see Donald holding Melania too close indicating his domineering, obnoxious personality. Melania appears to be in pain and is pulling back from him, much like in reality. Clearly, she would rather be anywhere else. Neither is smiling or looks the least bit happy. They are not even looking at each other. We all remember how in the middle of the dance, Trump raised his clenched fist as a sign of success or power or who the hell knows what but wasn’t it awful. Poor Melania. Poor America. How did we let this happen, the audience is asking themselves.By sharp contrast, in the picture of the Obamas’ first inaugural dance, we see two people who are obviously deeply in love. They are gazing into each other’s eyes as if nothing could ever come between them. They could be on a crowded dance floor and not notice anyone around them. You can feel the connection. The audience and every one watching are simply mesmerized. Barack and Michelle know they have accomplished the impossible and now they are dancing with joy and hope and so is America. This is a magic moment.

What's the dumbest thing you've heard a defendant say in the courtroom?

I had an elderly great aunt, 92 at the time, who got a speeding ticket for going 40 in a 30 zone. She called and told me what happened (miraculously she had never been ticketed in over 70 years of driving) and I contacted a good friend of mine on the police force and told him what happened and that we were going to severely limit her driving from now on (again, she was 92 at the time). He told me he would see if anything could be done. A week later, my aunt received a summons for a hearing and ultimately I went with her. When we arrived, we were sent to a room with a court magistrate and another policeman who was also a friend of mine. The magistrate turned to the officer and said, does the city of XXXXXX have any evidence in this case? The officer said, “the City has no evidence in this case.” At this point, my great aunt said: “Well, let me tell you what happened.” The officer, the magistrate, and I all practically yelled NO!!!As I was walking her out, I turned back to see the other two doubled up with laughter (I could hardly keep from laughing myself). My aunt drove until she was 95 and was in a small accident and suffered a broken arm. As she didn’t know how the accident had occurred (we believe she went through a red light), at that point we took her car away, much to her consternation. We all took turns taking her places for the next five years until she passed away at 100. She was a great lady and, boy, did she ever make us laugh that day!!EDIT: Wow, over three thousand upvotes, I’m glad so many of you got a chuckle from this story. My great aunt would have been “tickled,” to use her expression. Thanks for the upvotes!!Edit: Almost 10000 upvotes! WOW!

Why did Microsoft change the default font to Calibri?

I managed the Word PM team during Office 2007. Our team championed this change. There were two key reasons to support the change:1. Growth of digital consumption. We believed that more and more documents would never be printed but would solely be consumed on a digital device. Given we started this work in 2003 (long before Surface, iPhone, iPad, Kindle, etc.) this was a somewhat controversial opinion (more when it would happen, not if).To support digital consumption the new fonts were created to improve screen readability. They do this via a technology called ClearType. You can learn more about that ClearType here: ClearType Overview. There is an excellent blog post from the Engineering Windows 7 blog that gives additional detail on the ClearType: Engineering Changes to ClearType in Windows 7The collection of fonts introduced at this time are called the ClearType Font Collection.2. At the time, Office was looking to modernize the look and feel of documents created by the Office applications. They hadn't changed substantially since the early 90s. Among many other improvements, the introduction of the new fonts had a big impact on the modern look. The use of san serif Calibri as our default body font (instead of the old standard Times New Roman) was one of the more controversial changes.Calibri was just one of several fonts introduced at the time (ClearType Font Collection). Many other ClearType fonts for various languages have been released since. New Fonts in Windows 7
