Khalistan movement is somewhat misunderstood topic. Although it's described as a religious issue, Khalistan movement was a political mess that later on, got fueled by Pakistan.I was born in Punjab and have met people in US/UK/Canada and currently reside in Australia, I believe that I have firm grasp of this issue, however please do let me know, if I am wrong.Let's get a cup of tea/coffee and look at key historical aspects of Khalistan movement, as this is going to be a long answer.Khalistan movement can be traced back to 1940's, when Nehru promised Sikhs a semi-autonomous unit/state, so as to have a sense of freedom.During partition Hindu/Muslim was the major issue, but in reality it was Hindu/Muslim/Sikh issue.Issue became worse when Sikhs were assumed to join India/Pakistan, as per Nehru's press conference on 10th July, 1946.During partition, Sikhs were ignored, as Punjab was split between India/Pakistan on the basis of Hindu/Muslim religions.Kapur Singh in 1947, made the controversial statement and tried to start Khalistan movement.But the issue remained dormant till demand was made for Punjabi to be official language in 1950's.On 4th July, 1955, Indian Police invaded Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) and fired tear gas to disperse Sikhs, followed by Lathi Charge (beating civilians with sticks) and further beating with rifles (not firing but using rifles as melee weapons). Estimated 10,000+ Sikhs were arrested for peaceful demonstrations. This further laid foundations for the act, banning police officers carrying weapons into places of worship.Followed above, police did Indian Flag march and established themselves inside Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) for 4 days.Akali Dal at this time had few demands.The transfer of the federally administered city of Chandigarh to Punjab.The transfer of Punjabi-speaking and contiguous areas of Haryana to Punjab.Decentralization of states under the existing constitution, limiting the central government's role.The call for land reforms and industrialization of Punjab, along with safeguarding the rights of the weaker sections of the population.The enactment of an all-India Gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) act.Protection for minorities residing outside Punjab, but within India.Revision of government's recruitment quota restricting the number of Sikhs in armed forces.Sikh community was split into 2 at this stage.Wanted Sikh majority state within India.Wanted sovereign Khalistan.Akali Dal was seeking peace, but as this was politically hurting Indira Gandhi's Congress party. As such Indira Gandhi started supporting Bhindranwale, in hopes of splitting votes and weakening Akali Dal. Bhindranwale's candidates were supported by congress in 1978 SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, this is the committee that manages Gurudwaras) elections.This is where Khalistan movement is considered to have started.In 1979 Khalistan National Council was created by Jagjit Singh Chauhan. This was after he lost Punjab Assembly Elections in 1969. Jagjit Singh Chauhan was in contact with Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. This is where Jagjit Singh Chauhan issued Khalistan’s Passports/postage stamps/currency and finally declared himself as president of "Republic of Khalistan". Chauhan was residing in UK at this moment and was regularly visiting Pakistan.In late 1970's/early 1980's, Bhindranwale became unchallenged leader, as his speeches were highly polarizing.In 1981, Lala Jagat Narain was assassinated, he was owner of “Hind Samachar” group of newspapers. Responsibility was taken by Sikh militants, He was a critic of Bhindranwale and a congress leader. Issue here was, a politician running newspapers and promoting acceptance of Hindi language, when rest of the community was advocating for Punjabi as official language.Bhindranwale was already a suspect for previous murder and was arrested, but released.At this time, Bhindranwale decided to make Golden temple as his official residence.Although Akali Dal accused Bhindranwale to be a congress agent and opposing him, joined hands with him as Bhindranwale became highly influential. This was done, in order to get "Anandpur Resolution" accepted, which was considered secessionist document by Indira Gandhi. But for Akali Dal and Sikhs, it was the promise made by Nehru in 1940's and provided a solution for larger share of water for irrigation and return of Chandigarh to Punjab.In august 1982, Dharam Yudh Morcha (Group for the Battle for Righteousness) was conducted by Bhindranwale and Akali Dal.Akali Dal officially stated, that Sikhs were Indians and Anandpur Resolution did not promote Sikh State of Khalistan.Government of India decided to repress the mass agitation caused by Dharam Yudh Morcha, with heavy hand, and police action was conducted resulting in deaths of 100+ people in various police firings.Over 30,000 Sikhs were arrested in 3 months.In order to please public, Sh.Giani Zail Singh was made President of India.In 1982, Akali Dal organised protests in Delhi, during Asian Games.Over 5000 Sikh ex-servicemen joined, over 170 were above rank of colonel.At this time widespread murders were attributed to Bhindranwale and Sikh militants.Sikh militants were getting support from Pakistan, in terms of money/training and weapons. And Sikh militants were held up in Gurudwaras.Keeping 1955, Government of India decided not to take action on Gurudwaras, fearing public outrage.In 1983, 6 hindu passengers were taken off a bus and killed, this started the emergency rule in Punjab, which continued for more than a decade.Akali Dal started protesting again in 1983, against Indian Constitution clause (2)(b) of Article 25, which referenced Sikhs/Jains/Buddhists as Hindus. Akali Dal demanded implementation of Sikh specific laws.In 1984, Bhindranwale decided to bring ammunition into Golden Temple and provided shelter to militants.Bhindranwale's supporters were against this but negotiations between Bhindranwale, his supports, Akali Dal and Government of India were unsuccessful.Finally Indira Gandhi ordered Indian Army to storm Golden Temple complex. This came to be known as Operation Blue Star.Problem here was, Pakistan's support for militants was evident and Pakistan was looking for a way to support Khalistan movement internationally. Any more delay and Pakistan would have done so, and negotiations had broken down completely.Kuldip Singh Brar (Yes a Sikh) led army units along with paramilitary forces and surrounded Golden Temple complex on 3rd June, 1984.Militants decided to start firing at Army without giving pilgrims the chance to leave temple premises.This resulted in 24 hour firefight, at the end.136 Army personnel were killed.249 Army personnel injured.493 civilians were killed.86 civilians were injured.Who was at fault and Who shot who, is still open to debate.Unofficial figures go into thousands.This became a military success but biggest political embarrassment for Congress.On 31st October, 1984, Indira Gandhi was shot dead by 2 Sikh security guards (Satwant Singh and Beant Singh) as a retaliation for Operation Blue Star.This resulted in one of the biggest riots in India and violence against Sikhs across India. Congress maintained that the violence was due to spontaneous riots, although evident is present of planned violence against Sikhs.Almost every party except Congress condemned Operation Blue Star and riots after.This eventually lead to 15 yr long insurgency in India.During this time, specifically after 1971, Pakistan got involved, Pakistan provided training, money and weapons for militants. Some Pakistani military personnel personally came to India and worked alongside militants.There was numerous militant organisations, with Babbar Khalsa being the most famous.Khalistan movement in my opinion, is the biggest political mess caused by politicians. In the end it was public, the fundamentalism that won. Even today, except few, those who seek to gain money/political scoring, no one supports Khalistan movement.I have intentionally left out activities done by militants and the nexus between Police/Politicians/Militants for their personal gain, as that is a sub plot of Khalistan movement in Punjab, even if Khalistan movement never arose, these would have happened, as such I have left them aside.EDIT: I suggest reading comments and understanding the issue. A religious issue taken up by anyone who wants political mileage was twisted and abused, it ended up such a big mess that Hindus till this day blame sikhs and sikhs till this day blame everyone else.EDIT: It has been pointed out multiple times that I didn’t mention water issue. Well water issue had nothing to do with Khalistan.But anyway, here are few key points of how SYL came into being.Indus water treaty came into being in sept, 1960. But discussions were already underway in 1954.Sutlej situation was managed by Bhakra Nangal project, while there was no time left for major projects on Ravi and Beas.At this time Punjab (and Haryana) were not just a single state, it was Punjab and PEPSU. Punjab, PEPSU, Rajasthan and J&K came into agreement and Punjab getting 5.9Maf and PEPSU got 1.3.In 1956 Punjab was merged with PEPSU. If you are wondering what PEPSU was, it was state inside Punjab.Haryana was created on 18th Sept 1966, as a result of “Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966” which was direct result of “Punjabi Suba Movement” which Was lead by “Akali Dal”. But let’s blame Indira Gandhi for dividing Punjab in 2 and creating Haryana.At this time Haryana demanded 4.8Maf out of 7.2Maf of water, which was unfair, while newly formed Punjab wanted 7.2Maf which was also not fair.Haryana was first to ask Union Govt (central govt) to intervene. And till 1976, this issue jumped around and no one was able to solve it, both sides were being unfair.In 1976, during emergency, Indira Gandhi signed executive orders, to give 3.5Maf to both sides and 0.2Maf to Delhi. And in order to manage water, SYL was proposed.Akali Dal once again in opposition, completely opposed this, and coming to power in 1977, Akali Dal took the dispute to Supreme Court.And while with his right hand Parkash Singh Badal field Supreme Court, with his left hand, he started construction of SYL. And Haryana paid Rs. 1crore to Punjab for construction. Haryana completed SYL on its side by 1980.In 1981, total water under agreement to Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan was revised at 17.17 and as such Punjab got 4.22Maf (increased from 3.5Maf) while Haryana got same 3.5Maf. Everyone agreed on this and Supreme Court case was withdrawn.In 1985 Akali Dal won the election, why will they not? Akali Dal once again made sweeping statements of injustice and all water being stolen. And once Akali Dal was back in power, they withdrew 1981 agreement.In 1986 Eradi tribunal was setup, to check every single water agreement (1955/1976/1981). Every single agreement was upheld by tribunal. But in the end water share of Punjab was increased to 5Maf and Haryana to 3.83Maf.Did you get the point here yet??? Every political party was wasting state resources, so they can get a tiny bit more water and still keep on creating enough problems to fight for in future, so they can keep on playing vote bank politics.On Punjab side construction started again on SYL in 1990, but never finished. Construction was slow but completely stopped when a Khalistani militant shot a chief engineer.In 1999, Haryana went to Supreme Court.In 2002, Supreme Court asked Punjab government to finish construction of SYL within a year. Punjab govt refused to do so and filed a review.On 2nd July, 2004, Supreme Court asked CPWD to take over construction of SYL.On 12th July, 2004, Punjab legislative Assembly passed “Punjab Termination of Agreements Act of 2004”, and cancelled all agreements with neighbour states. President on India had to take this to Supreme Court.Supreme Court was delayed till 2016, on 7th March, 2016, Supreme Court finally opened the case and on 15th March, 2016, Punjab Legislative Assembly passed “Punjab Satluj Yamuna Link Canal Land (Transfer of Proprietary Rights) Bill, 2016“, essentially Punjab Government, proposed to give land back to their previous owners.On 18th March, 2016, Supreme Court asked Punjab govt to maintain status quo.On 10th Nov, 2016, Supreme Court gave its opinion on “Punjab Termination of Agreements act” and deemed it illegal.On 15th Nov, 2016, Punjab govt denotified the land meant for SYL and started giving it back to owners.On 16th, Nov, 2016, Punjab legislative assembly passed resolution, to demand royalties from Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi for water used by them.By 20th Nov, 2016, all of the denotified land was given back to owners.On 30th Nov, 2016, Supreme Court once again asked Punjab govt to maintain status quo.On 22nd Feb, 2017, Supreme Court made it clear, that Punjab govt had to abide by orders and complete SYL.Now you are more than welcome to check who gave what statements on water issue and how it has been twisted by both sides to show themselves as victims.All it really is, corrupt politicians who misinform people to maintain vote banks, while people had no choice, but to use bore water, which is going to run out soon, and then you can guess who will suffer.

The La Mon restaurant bombing was an incendiary bomb attack by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) on 17 February 1978 that is described as one of the worst atrocities of the Troubles.It took place at the La Mon House hotel and restaurant near Belfast.The IRA left a large incendiary bomb, containing a napalm-like substance, outside one of the restaurant's windows. So this will be my first answer on quora.Will be sharing some secrets I never shared with anyone and would also be taking you through some problems that i faced in my life. . This will be a long post so please have enough patience.I am 20 now and my family consists of my dad, who is in the Army, my mom who is a homemaker, thier two sons ,youngest one bieng me and my elder brother who is a engineering grad.I was in 2nd std when a guy who was 8 yrs older than me, a guy my parents always liked, a guy who was really brilliant in academics and was an ideal role model for anyone, made me touch his erect penis not once, but plenty times during a course of one year. And I was not able to tell this to anyone bcz i didn't know what was happening, was the thing he doing was right or wrong. Many years have passed i have still not told abt this to anyone. That guy is now an officer in the Indian armed forces. (Came to know abt this when i planned to find the whereabouts of that person in fb).2. I belong to a family where people think my parents are a perfect couple but they aren't. They fight among themselves for petty issue mainly because of my paternal grandmother. Me and my brother used to go out to play even if no one was there to play just because we wanted to stay away from those fights,I used to hug my brother and cry asking him whether everything will be okay at home before we went home after playing. My mom once attempted to committ suicide but was saved as my dad came home exactly at the same time..I still remeber waking up at night from my sleep when i was 8 yr old as my brother was crying and pleading my dad not to beat my mom. i was in 5th std and due to the torture my mom was facing because of my grandmother and father she went to her hometown for 10 long months. But still she came back for us,for me and my brother. Everything was okay for a few months and it again started. They again started to fight. I was able to get through all this only beacuse of my brother. Was he not there i would have certainty committed SUICIDE.3. Finished with my class 10th . Got 9.5 cgpa. Not an average score considering I studied just a day before the exams. But instead of praising me, instead of congratulating me, all my dad did was compare me with other boys and girls in my class. Compare me with my cousins. Where parents where buying their children mobile phones and other gifts for clearing class 10th inspite of getting much lower scores than me, here was my dad making me feel degraded day by day..3. Clas 12th. The so called MEGA LADDER to future. Where people where thinking abt getting into iits,nits and other great institutions, here i was searching for career options which will take me far away from home,far away from the nuisance of my parents . Finally I decided. I knew the fact that even if i score high marks in class 12th i would still be degraded by my dad. Because in class 11 inspite of getting 90, I was again compared to other kids. So I decided i am not gonna study much, will sleep,eat and repeat, maybe because i was overconfident of myself that even if study a day before my exams i will still be able to get though with 60 % pcm agg. The requirement required by the career option i chose. Finally cleared my class 12th, got 70% with pcm abv 60 % agg. Was again shamed and degraded by my dad but all i thought in my mind was FUCK OFF. I got what i wanted. Got into the college i wanted . nothing can stop me from going away from home. Took a bank loan to fund my education or else my dad would have kept taunting me and would have started to compare me with others if i had studied with his money. Everything went perfectly, kept a distance from my home. Away from all the bullshits and nuisance of my parents here i am living the LIFE. So finally Came back home 3 months ago due to my holidays thinking something would have changed. But did it?. No it didn't they still fight like cats and dogs.Now many of you might be thinking I am selfish, I left my mom with that guy just beacuse i wanted to be free. No it's not. The main reason i chose this career option was that, i knew it will give me enough money with which i will be able to get my mom away from my dad the next time he raises hand on her. And i am glad i didnt choose engineering inspite of clearing most of the competetive exams bcz had I, i would have again be shamed and be degraded by my dad everyday. No my dad is not a bad guy as many of you might be thinking now. He is a really nice person, someone who will go all the way to see thier children happy, I CAN SAY HE IS THE BEST DAD EVER (feels funny after saying so much bad abt him but yes he really is a nice person. But he failed as a father by not understanding what their children go through when their parents fight. What their children will feel when you compare them with others.)Yes through all this thing there were only 2 people who helped me cope up. One is my mother who gave me enough motivation to work harder ,a reason to achive my goal. Second my brother, who was there with me during my harships and provided me support mentally,and financially.And whenever my friend asks why am i still single i just do away with that question. But the answer to that question is that I really don't think i will ever be able to find a girlfriend, even though I cry a lot about being single ,because I have lost faith in the word called LOVE . No i have never been cheated by a girl . But yes, I don't want to take the risk . The risk of being in something which has a high probability of resulting in failure and would again make me go through emotional trauma. Have gone through this trauma a lot during my childhood due to my parents and I really don't want more of that emotional drift.And to all those who beat women — YOU ARE NOT A MAN, YOU ARE A PEST… EVEN PESTS ARE BETTER THAN YOU.So that was it. But i insisted on taking a loan bcoz from the previous experiences i know he would have kept on comparing me with those so called ideal kids who took loan for funding their education. So yes, it was through him i applied in the bank and he is my guarantor..Edit: So Quora deleted my comment what i wrote for mr sharma . Dont know why. So Mr sharma I cleared my class 10th almost 4yrs ago. You don't know what i went through while writing all this and if you expect me to remember tiniest of the tiniest details admist writing this then I am sorry mate I'm not that brilliant of a guy like YOU. But I really don't care what you would have thought after reading this. Okay for your info I got 9.6. Wait. Let me give you more. I got 10cgpa in english,sanskrit,science and sst. Managed to get only 8 in maths. Yes i was and still i am poor in maths. I only got 45% in maths in class 12th. Damn i really wnt through my files to get my 10th std certificate just to answer your question. Hope it makes you happy. But I would like to give you a suggestion bro - everyone is not lucky to be born in a family where there's a healthy relationship among the members so if you can't understand that atleast don't try to tell anyone that they are faking their story. Just tell me what will i get by faking anything man. You see you just made me realize that no matter how hard I try to get up, i will always be let down by someone. But i don't care.
