PDF Editor FAQ

Why are so many Americans against general social benefits such as health care?

My answer is not going to endear me to many Americans, but here goes:Many Americans I know, have met, and have listened to, are against social benefits for several reasons.First, unlike other developed nations, the US never accepted the concept of solidarity, the idea that we all contribute when we can and we all benefit, especially when we are in need. This manifests itself in the attitude that they had to work hard to get where they are, so they don’t want to just give stuff away to others. There’s a related misconception or misunderstanding that somehow their bank account will be depleted and they won’t receive anything in return; in other words, they believe that their taxes will skyrocket and that they will also still have to keep paying for all the other services they currently use. Then, there’s an element of — dare I say it — racism, or at least “otherism” [edit: I have been informed that the appropriate word is othering or perhaps alterity]; they especially don’t want to share their hard-earned wealth and status with them (for various values of them). There’s also a growing mistrust and even distrust of government and government programs. This is not completely unfounded. There’s a related position of defending free markets rather than collective solutions. [Note that this point provides a convenient “objective” argument as a way of hiding the other ones. For very few people in my experience are these truly their primary reason, which becomes obvious after just scratching the surface with them in a discussion.]Finally, there’s a huge aspect of partisan tribalism. In other words, if the wrong team proposes the programs, then by definition such programs must be rejected out of hand, even if, as was the case for ACA, the program was indeed originally proposed by the “right” team.

Are America's elderly bleeding the nation white by taking all the social benefits and contributing absolutely NOTHING?

America’s elderly have loaned the US government several trillion dollars by overfunding social security for decades (Social Security Trust Fund - Wikipedia). At this point they are well and truly entitled to be paid back for their hard work over a lifetime of employment.

What is your review of Capitalism?

My reading of the 20th century is that true socialism – state ownership of the means of production – doesn’t work very well. In a few important areas, such as health care, direct government provision of goods and services seems to do the job as well or better than markets, but in most of the economy it’s better to harness self-interest than to allocate resources directly. But that doesn’t mean you have to have capitalism red in tooth and claw. What we’ve also seen is that countries can raise a lot of money in taxes, use that money to provide a lot of social benefits, and regulate markets while still remaining rich and productive. So I’m for social democracy, which is basically capitalism with some of the rough edges sanded off.
