They say “phobia” means fear, so technically, homophobia is the fear of gay people. But that’s such an easy response, so I thought I would offer some examples of when homophobia has affected my life (kudos if you can read this all):When I was in the Air Force, I was very young and considered attractive by some females, so they would just hit on me relentlessly and then act like it was the end of the world when I wouldn’t date them or have sex with them. Finally, this one girl was so relentless, that I showed her a picture of my boyfriend (whom I hid from the Air Force) and she immediately went and reported me. The punishment was harsh, to say the least.After I got out of the military, I joined a fire department and served for many years. Finally, my chief heard some of my phone calls, back when you could pick up cell phones calls on a scanner, and he called an emergency public meeting to discuss my employment. The chief said, “We don’t need a f#%@t on this department,” and then proceeded to fire me. This was in Cascade, Colorado.I decided to join the fire department at the next town over, but after my first few months, my former chief heard I had joined and told them about the f#%@t trying to join their department. Obviously, they fired me. This was Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.So, I went to the next town and joined their department. It was the final day of my probation and I had to stand up in front of the department while they asked me some questions. Turns out they found out as well and they fired me. This was Woodland Park, Colorado.Next, I joined the Colorado Springs fire department and they were up front about how my former chief had come to warn them about my sexuality. He said they didn’t care as long as I could pass their fire academy. So I did and I joined the fire department as the first gay man in 105 years. I spent one year on the normal firefighter probation. There were a lot of guys in the department that expressed disgust about me being in the same locker room as them or sleeping in the same room. At the end of my probation, they denied me further employment and told me that the department “just wasn’t ready for it.” At least they didn’t call me f#%@t! And getting hired the first round was a feat that I’ll always be proud of.And let’s not even talk about churches. I was kicked out of four churches because, when they found out I was gay, they tried to convert me, and, when I didn’t become straight, they said that I was not receptive to the Holy Spirit. Four different churches asked me to leave after four failed attempts to convert me.And then there is MURDER. Not too many years later, the man that I had been dating for years was murdered in Denver, Colorado, because the “self-proclaimed neo-Nazi“ didn’t like gay people.Now I live in Orlando, Florida, with my husband of 15 years and work at Walt Disney World. You would think this would be of the safest places for gay people, but several times, when I have been posing for a picture inside the park with my husband, a nasty guest has come up and told us how disgusting we were. We merely stood next to each other and put our arms behind each other’s back. Disney has no tolerance for that, but these were just bigots visiting the park.Somewhat recently, we were at Taco Bell eating at our table, when what looked like a homeless man came up and started shouting obscenities at us and he began to get physical. Taco Bell did NOTHING to stop it and I had to take care of it myself.And finally, three years ago we tried to adopt a child through the Orange County Social Services system in Orlando, Florida, and we were denied a child because the lady who ran the office claimed that she was a very devout Latino Catholic and she could not in good conscience place one of “her” children with two men.So what does it mean when I say that I would like for homophobia to go away? Well it does not mean that I am looking for special rights. I don’t want to be treated better than anyone and I don’t want any rights that straight people can’t get just because I’m gay. What it does mean is this:For years we just wanted to be legally married so that we could file taxes together and claim the financial benefits. Finally, that became a reality.I would like to know that I can adopt a child. It is now legal in Florida for gay couples to adopt, but just not through the Social Services System. We can go pay $35,000 per kid at a private agency, but we are not allowed to get a kid through the state. It’s funny how the crack addict sitting next to us in the adoption classes was able to get her SIXTH kid. She is a single woman living in poverty and the state gave her a sixth kid.For years we had to stand in the waiting room of hospitals while our “partners” died of cancer or from an injury. We weren’t allowed in because we weren’t technically family. Now that we are married, that has been solved.I would like to know that I can stand and pose for a picture at Walt Disney World (or anywhere for that matter) without angry guests coming up and bashing us in public.I would like to know that I can never again be fired from a job for being gay. Well luckily the Supreme Court just made a ruling stating this, and it shouldn’t happen again.I would like to know that we are welcome in any church as a couple. I’d like to know that I can receive the love of Jesus Christ just like straight people can.And MOST OF ALL, I would love to know that I will never again lose a spouse to murder because someone hates gays.I get that life can be tough and we all go through trials and tribulations. But I’ve lived through my share of them and I just want to live and love peacefully without the judgment of more than half of the world against me.Absolutely nothing that I have written was made up or embellished – every single bit of it is true. “What system does Senator Bernie Sanders propose for replacing current United States immigration policies and agencies?”I imagine that, in 2002, when Sen. Sanders voted against the creation of DHS and the establishment of ICE, he was content to keep the then-extant Immigration and Naturalization Service, which at that time was a division of the Department of Justice, as the primary enforcer of immigration law and policy.The 2002 Homeland Security bill created DHS as an intrinsically “rogue” department, and stuffed a great many law enforcement agencies into DHS. The fact that all DHS agencies are exempted from the civil service merit employment system that governs all other federal employees is what makes all DHS agencies—such as ICE—much more likely to “go rogue”.I suspect the reason Sen. Sanders opposed the DHS bill was for the twin reasons that he viewed this restructuring as unnecessary, and because he believed that pulling these agencies out of the oversight of the civil service system to be a bad idea. Given that he ties his current opposition to his past opposition, I surmise that he would disband DHS and return its constituent agencies to the executive departments they were in previously. At the very least, I expect he would put all present DHS agencies back under the full regular oversight of the Office of Personnel Management, and thus prohibit the sort of partisan hiring and promotion practices that have plagued DHS from the moment it was created.
