“Where can I purchase a Remington Model 700 80 percent receiver?”A Remington 80%? Not gonna happen. Remington doesn’t sell incomplete receivers.With a good mill and lathe you can clone the Remington 700 action, but it would be incredibly difficult. Cutting the locking lug guides/recesses is better done using ‘wire EDM’. The other issue would be hardening the receiver to withstand use.There was a gentleman by the name of Gary Breiling out of Illinois selling ‘80%’ bolt action receivers a few years ago(2014-ish). They were wire EDM cut from 17-4PH stainless steel Condition H1025. I believe completion required cutting the sear slot, ejection port, drilling and tapping for trigger attachment and threading the front of the receiver for the barrel. Action blanks were around $2–250. It would be far simpler, and likely far cheaper, to just buy a used Remington or Savage(particularly a Savage) and re-barrel it if you want increased performance or some esoteric cartridge.

Which cities have served as the “Murder Capital” of the U.S., either in name or statistically speaking?You hear this term thrown about in the media, Murder Capital of the U.S., Murder Capital of the World. This is a term that can be defined in two different ways, either total annual homicides or highest homicide rate per capita. But are these titles even accurate?Only a few notorious cities have been given this moniker in the United States. As Detroit began their slow decline, they first earned the title in 1974. Washington, D.C., took over in the late ‘80s. New Orleans has been the overwhelming champion countless times. Even Birmingham took the title once. On the other hand, Chicago wins the title on a yearly basis by sheer numbers of homicides. New York used to hold that title, but the city was cleaned up decades ago.But were any of these cities the actual statistical leaders?A. Total annual homicides (murders and nonnegligent manslaughter):Record - 2,245 (New York, 1990)From the year 1797 when homicide statistics were first recorded, to the year 1997, New York recorded the most homicides of any American city. Of course, the higher the population, the more crime you would theoretically have. New York has been the most populated city in the U.S. since they surpassed Philadelphia in late 1783, so it makes sense to have the most homicides. Remember, New York includes a lot more than just Manhattan (which remains relatively safe), once having high numbers of crime in its other boroughs . Also, the murder “rate” in New York wasn’t terribly high during that time span, remaining under 30 homicides per 100,000 except once. In 1990, New York did rise to 30.66 homicides per 100,000 while setting the American record of 2,245 homicides in a single year that stands today. But again, those numbers aren’t unreasonable for such a large city.After 27 straight years of over 1,000 murders, major reform took place in New York and the crime rate plummeted. By 1997, they only had 700 homicides in a city of 7.3 million people. So which city finally topped New York after their 200-year reign? In 1997, Chicago was only 9 murders behind New York. In 1998, Chicago finally took the title with 704 homicides, 71 more than New York. That was disappointing for Chicago as the third largest city in the U.S., given they were only 37% the population of New York that year.Chicago won’t be surpassed for a long timeChicago would lead the nation in total murders in 1998, New York in 1999 and 2000, Chicago 2001–2003, New York 2004–2011, and finally Chicago 2012 to the present. As New York’s numbers have steadily dropped, they weren’t even within 100 murders of the leader in 2015 for the first time since 1797. As Chicago continued to spiral out of control, they led New York by 121 homicides in 2015, and by 442 in 2016! With New York only averaging 321 homicides over the past seven years, a measly 3.8 per 100,000, safety is high and their days of being the Murder Capital are definitely over.Baltimore is a messShockingly, from 2017 to the present, Baltimore has ranked second to Chicago in total homicides, despite the fact that Baltimore only has 7% the population of New York and 15% the population of Chicago! Homicide rate per capita:Record - 162.05 homicides per 100,000 (East St. Louis, 1991)A more accurate assessment of crime within a city or state is the “rate per capita,” typically expressed per 100,000 people when it comes to murders. New York and Chicago might register huge numbers of annual homicides, but these are enormous cities. New York’s worst rate per 100,000 people was 30.66 (1990), while Chicago’s worst was 33.29 (1992). But there are other cities where the murder rate has been more than five times those rates!In 1985, while newspapers were eagerly proclaiming Detroit the Murder Capital of the U.S. with 58.23 homicides per 100,000 people, most Americans didn’t realize a tiny detail. The media bases this title solely on America’s major cities with large populations. Flying under the radar, the smaller Illinois town of East St. Louis only has a population of 53,769 and covers less than 14 square miles. While Detroit was getting bad press in 1985, East St. Louis was recording a homicide rate of 78.11, way more than Detroit and the worst in the nation!East St. Louis, across the river from St. Louis, Missouri, has actually led the nation with the highest homicide rate in 29 of the past 35 years! Is this the real Murder Capital? If we’re going by rate, they’re a lot worse than Chicago, Baltimore, St. Louis, New Orleans, and all the rest of them! Only New Orleans in (2008) and Gary, Indiana, (1996, 1997, 1999–2001) have led East St. Louis with a higher homicide rate during that span.East St. Louis is the ONLY American city to ever break the barrier of 100 homicides per 100,000, doing it not once, but 10 different times (1988–1994, 2007, 2014, 2016). In 1991, East St. Louis set the unthinkable record of 162.05 murders per 100,000, a rate even higher than world leader Tijuana, Mexico!(A crime scene in East St. Louis)With no crime records available from East St. Louis prior to 1985, there is no telling how far back this horrendous crime rate goes. Across the state line, St. Louis takes the brunt of the press these days for highest murder rate among major cities. It’s not a good situation there either! But that rate pales in comparison to East St. Louis. In 2014, the death of Michael Brown made national news and put St. Louis in the spotlight. But their issues with crime go way back. St. Louis became the first American city to surpass 50 homicides per 100,000 in 1975!Note to touristsIf you’re a tourist, this post might make you nervous about visiting America. But don’t worry. The majority of America is completely safe. There is no way you would ever find your way into East St. Louis, unless you went there on purpose! But why would you?The real Murder Capital of America:By total murders - Chicago led again in 2019 with 490 homicides, but that’s only 18 per 100,000. A terribly high number of deaths, but a very small rate.By murder rate - Small town East St. Louis led again in 2019 with 88 homicides per 100,000, but that calculation means there were only 23 murders among 26,047 people. A horrible rate, among the worst in the world, but not many actual homicides.Pick your murder capital.
