It seems that you are unaware of the dynamics of Indian Railways (IR). IR operates a very complex environment and has far too many challenges.First and foremost, it is the only method of ferrying people around at a low cost and millions of people depend upon IR to provide them a cheap and reliable means of transport. While IR schedules are not reliable at all, at least people get a cheap means of going places.European railways do not have the huge demand as seen by Indian Railways and they are quite expensive at most times unlike IR.Very few countries have a rail network as expansive as India. The resources (tracks) are meagre but the number of trains plying on them is huge. The typical Indian train has 16–18 coaches on an average and many have 23-24 coaches.Europe and elsewhere have dedicated lines for freight and passenger unlike India. In UK, London to Manchester (about 300km) take 2′ 20″ while a similar distance of New Delhi to Gwalior by the Gatiman Express takes 4′15″. This is precisely because of the congestion and track condition.While it is true that safety and maintenance lags behind in India, it is not because of lack of will or attitude. The traffic simply prevents such operations. The fact that railways run at a deficit of 43% year over year, it is a miracle the railways still run in India.The cost of the Second Class peak time ticket between London Euston to Manchester is £185 (about INR 17390). The similar distance to New Delhi to Gwalior by Gatiman Express Second Class AC Chair Car fare is INR 940. Is this even comparable?Edit (7-Nov-2018): BTW, the Gatiman Express fare includes mineral water, newspaper, breakfast and tea also.Trains which were superfast and have limited stops have been made to halt at many more stations. Each stop increases the time by some 15 minutes. Politicians have forced this on the railways.On the Kanpur - Mughalsarai section, there are trains running every 7~10 minutes. How can one increase the train speed without compromising safety?I could go on and on but you asked “when the two will be comparable”. The answer is when:We have a complete Dedicated Freight Corridor and not just North-South and East-West.Tracks and signals are improved much better.Traffic congestion is lowered. A train travelling at 200 kph requires 50 km of clear track ahead.Politicians stop interfering in IR operations and stop adding all kinds of useless trains just to cater to their constituency.The fares are at par with the running costs. Be ready for 125% increase, if that were to happen.However …I have travelled in Europe on Euronight Express and Eurostar trains. I can swear that they are no better in quality and comfort than our Humsafar Express or Tejas Express. Eurostar is of course very-very fast and that is the only difference.Humsafar Express Coach (Exterior and Interior) (Exterior is superb while interior is good).Euronight Express Coach (Exterior and Interior) (Slightly better cushioned berths and all are cabins)Tejas Express (Exterior and Interior) (Exterior is OK nowhere comparable to Eurostar but interior is far better).Eurostar (Exterior and Interior) (Well, exterior is much better, but interior is mundane).

This now a fairly well known phenomenon. Humans can see bright infrared remote diodes through a two photon process.This is a nonlinear process in which a cone in the eye absorbs two photons at essentially the same time, allowing you to see near infrared if it is bright enough.The eye doesn’t just cut off all at once at 700 nanometers. A bright enough infrared source can be seen as far out as 1200 nanometers (a 5 milliwatt laser beam directly into the eye). Beyond that, the source needs to be so bright that it becomes dangerous.Recent publications have suggested that this is due to multi-photon absorption by the cones of the eye.A few of my colleagues and I saw this work with a visible camera as well. An infrared laser beam with a wavelength longer than 1200 nm was seen by a camera that we had installed to observe a mirror while the high energy laser was firing. When we reviewed the recorded video, we noticed that the infrared beam could be seen on camera, even though theoretically a photon at that wavelength does not have enough energy to put an electron into the conduction band. This was finally tracked down to two-photon absorption in the silicon. This happened about 25 years ago.I wish I could find the reference on the 1200 nm 5 mW laser into the eye, but I can no longer seem to locate it.
