Yes, psychologists need to be very intelligent people!To begin with a good psychologist must get a high score to commence their psychology degree. Psychologists must have good cognitive abilities. They must be able to learn, retain and recall verbally presented information.Moreover, psychologists must have excellent executive functioning; an ability to encode and retain nonverbal cues & excellent problem-solving skills.Their ability to interpret body language and nonverbal cues must be on par with their cognitive functioning. They must also be able to relate to people from all walks of life and ages.A potential psychologist must commence their own psychotherapy before they begin working as a psychologist. Meaning, their therapy must commence whilst they are training to become a psychologist.Moreover, they need to explore their psyche and resolve internal conflicts that have the potential to emotionally compromise them. The psychologist must be able learn to distinguish between their own emotional baggage and that of their clients.Training Requirements:Psychologists are required to complete multiple postgraduate qualifications. Depending on what country you live in, a trainee must gain their Master’s degree or Doctorate or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) to work as a psychologist.A psychologists training (especially clinical psychologist) focuses on the following areas:psychological and statistics theory,administration and scoring of psychometric, personality & projective tests,developing the quality of psych assessments (engaging the client, diagnosis & treatment),report writing,the practice of psychotherapy (each course may focus on one psychotherapy paradigm whilst exploring other psychological paradigms briefly).A trainee clinical psych is expected to assess, diagnose and treat clients (both children and adults) at the University Psychology Clinic. Ultimately, a good potential psychologist must have a number of abilities prior to commencing studies.For example, they must:make accurate body language observations,have an analytical mind,possess good problem-solving skills,be able to think outside of the square,be psychologically minded,they must be able to self-reflect and develop emotionally as an individual,they must have the capacity for thought.Most importantly, psychologists must be able to learn how to cope with the emotional distress and sadness that they are exposed to on a daily basis. If they fail to do this, they may burnout or become unwell.A psychologist must have the intelligence necessary to perform academically. They must also have a particular personality profile that enables them to develop empathy with their clients.It is important & necessary (for registration) for a psychologist to continue studying and attending professional development seminars.Being a psychologist is very different to being a lawyer, or an IT professional or an accountant or mathematician. Psychologists often work with their client’s carer/family members and other professionals.Edit on 30/11/2018After reading Michael Soso's comment, it became apparent that I must include "tolerance" to the list of attributes psychologists must have!I have come across so many intolerant psychologists that either deny service or provide poor service to the following groups of people:people from different racial backgrounds, especially African and middle eastern,people from low SES backgrounds,offenders, especially paedophiles.It’s unfortunate that our profession cannot filter out the intolerant psychologists that do more harm than good. However, intolerance is a human trait that exists within all of us and hopefully after time and experience, the intolerant psychologists will change or be rooted out of the profession.Kamal

They can work in specialist forensic teams that assess and treat patients that pose a significant risk to themselves and others.They can also work in the criminal justice system. They can work in jails or specialised hospitals for the criminally insane.For example, they can work in large hospitals (with security similar to jails) that provide acute and continuing care programs for patients that are generally admitted to the hospital from the criminal justice system under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997, Mental Health Act 2014 or the Sentencing Act 1991.Private PracticeOther than the above-mentioned type of work, clinical psychologists can work in private practice. Some countries allow psychologists to acquire a provider number and bill Medicare, but the schemes are very limited and restricted.For example, under the Mental Health Management Plan Program a psychologist may be able to bill Medicare 8–12 times a year for each client.Mental Health Research SectorPsychologist can also work in the mental health research sector. They generally work as research clinicians. For example, I have worked as a Research Clinician at a major research institute that housed clinical and research laboratories with strong molecular and In-Vivo capabilities.My work involved the development of psycho-social treatments for people suffering from schizophrenia, post-natal depression and psychosis as well as other severe mental illnesses. A pilot study was then conducted to test the efficacy of the interventions.I worked alongside scientists that conducted laboratory experiments in an attempt to explore the biological and genetic link to disorders such as schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Alzheimer's disease.Mental health trainingPsychologist can conduct training seminars for other mental health workers and general practitioners.
