I am not sure about millionaires, but I am pretty sure that most beggars are much richer than most people on wages. And this is in relatively poor countries like Turkey and China. In richer European or North american countries, their situation might even be better. From time to time we hear about them in the news being caught with thousands of dollars in cash, not to mention real estate, gold and other properties.There is even a story of a beggar in China who pays people to help him count his collected cash.So yes, it would not be very surprising to see beggar millionaires.

Absolutely.But not for the reasons partisans are putting forth.I am no fan of Jim Acosta or CNN. Or for that matter, Fox News. I do not mind reporters being partisans and wish they would admit it more often, but I do mind when their bias gets in the way of their doing their jobs. Both CNN and Fox let partisanship interfere to an extent that I do not find their work product useful and seldom consume anything they produce.But, I have watched the unedited original broadcast of the exchange between Acosta and Trump several times now, and while I agree that Acosta should have relinquished the microphone a bit quicker than he did, it is undeniable that Trump purposely escalated the situation from the very start. Acosta had just begun his question when Trump rudely interrupted by saying, “Here we go.” If you do not remember it clearly, go back and watch. It is unmistakable that this confrontation was preplanned and deliberate.The President signaled that the rules of decorum did not apply with his open hostility from the very beginning.Jim Acosta did better than most could at pushing back against Trump's pugilism. Had he not reacted forcefully, many would be calling him out for his timidity. Acosta was in a no-win situation and Trump exploited it. It is abundantly clear that Trump was itching for this fight and the speed with which Acosta’s credentials were suspended makes it clear that this too was thought out in advance.As truly horrible as this is, it is not this particular crossed-line that should concern you.By adopting the pugilistic posture and following it up by banning Acosta from the Press Room, Donald Trump declared an intent to suborn the United States press. And “suborn” is exactly the right word. While the President’s actions are public, the effects are hard to connect without a clear expression of evil intent however undeniable this inference may be. Anything against Trump’s interests is fake news. Any probing question is rude. Anyone not on board is an enemy of the people.While the most natural reaction to the situation is anger, it is hard not to blow right through the anger phase into Red Terror.If you are not afraid, you should be. Not because of what happened to Jim Acosta per se, but because of what happened next. After Peter Alexander offered a defense of Acosta, Trump was quick to tell him that he did not like him much either.The message was quite clear: “Do you want to be next Peter? Do you? Typical of the White House Press corps though, they returned to preening for the camera rather than boldly confronting the bully on his own turf.The press loves to embrace the mantle of the Fourth Estate, but if they want to claim that lofty appellation they need to start acting the part.Trump has served notice on Congress that if you do not go along, it means war—this press conference delivered the exact same message to the press. While historically their individual interests have been adverse, if they do not collectively act now, forget any Fourth Estate pretentions and rename the White House Press Room Pravda-West.The scariest part of Donald Trump is that he is so transparent yet people for some reason do not take him at his word. And his words in this regard are terrifying. In June, Trump told us what he wants, but because of the daily outrages, it is easy to forget. Speaking fondly of the violent, oppressive dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, he said:He’s the head of a country and I mean he is the strong head. Don’t let anyone think anything different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.Trump: I want 'my people' to 'sit up at attention' like in North KoreaHe told us months ago. It is time to listen.What happened to Jim Acosta was no accident—it was the plan all along.

Electronic media, radio and television, joined the print media in this role. They press (media) was a watchdog. They raised the voice of the people, they kept the powerful in check. They were effective means of checks and balances that kept democracy functioning and power not going to the head of tyrants. It is little wonder that press freedom, even today, is a fair indicator of the strength of democracy.The last five countries on the 2017 World Press Freedom Index from the Reporters Without Borders, are North Korea, Eritrea, Turkmenistan, Syria and China. The first five are Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands. See the connection?With the growth of internet, traditional media has a competitor - social media which is now often called the Fifth Estate. In times when traditional media is increasingly being centralised and coming under corporate control, the fifth estate is playing the role of the watchdog.Suffice to say, where media is strong and free, democracy has a chance. When it comes under control of those in power, either voluntarily or through threats, it is nothing but mouthpieces of power.Then of course now everything is changing again with Fake News that covers the fourth and fifth estates.
