Gaudete means “rejoice!” “Gaudete” Sunday is 3 Advent (the Sunday closest to 14 December or the second Sunday prior to Christmas). The name likely comes from the lectionary readings appointed for that day (Isaiah 35:10 in Year A, 1 Thess. 5:16 in Year B, Phil. 4:4 in Year C). The Philippians text (“Rejoice in the Lord alway!”) was also part of the introit for the traditional Latin Mass on this day.This is also the point where the Gospel selections shift from the “repent!” message of John to the “be glad for God is coming” idea of Christmas; this shift begins in earnest on 17 December with the ‘O Antiphons.’Pink is “a splash of colour,” according to the Church of England, which also tells us that the custom of observing this Sunday is “mediaeval”:The Third Sunday of Advent was observed in medieval times as a splash of colour in the restrained atmosphere of Advent (Gaudete or ‘Rose Sunday’)… .The Church of England. I'm not an expert on this topic, but it has to do with lunar calendars. Because there are 12 lunar cycles per solar year plus a handful of leftover days, lunar years have to alternate between 12 and 13 lunar months to avoid holidays slowly shifting earlier and earlier and being at the wrong time of year.Passover always begins on the 15th day of Nisan, the seventh lunar month. During a leap year, though, Nisan is the eighth month and so Passover is a full month later. The current Hebrew year, 5776, is a leap year.Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21, the Spring equinox. Effectively, this means the third Sunday of the seventh lunar month, but with the difference that it will be in the seventh month regardless of whether it is a Hebrew leap year.When we have a Hebrew leap year, the two holidays go from being a maximum of about 7 days apart to being a minimum of about 23 days apart.

This is a bit like asking why they didn’t write any songs for the Third Sunday after Trinity. The Beatles weren’t Christians in any meaningful sense of the word, and there’s no tradition of Easter (or Third Sunday after Trinity) songs in popular music. So there’s no reason why they would have been inspired to write, or wanted to write, such a song in the first place, and had they done so it would have puzzled everyone (though no doubt they could have written a good one had they wanted to).
