What happens in the orientation programme at NIFT?

The Orientation Programme of NIFT is fun, frolic and engagements. It is to find your potentials (Potentials include everything ;p) and get ready to shoot! It’s probably one of a kind! It has ice-breaking sessions , interactive sessions and where students (friends for life) are going to discover each other, know what lies ahead. Led by bright (atleast for the one week) faculties, you will find yourself between something good and amazing. That is where your life starts to change because your way of thinking changes, the way you approach things change; moreover your likes and dislikes change! You shall find yourself in altogether a new world, not something that you knew about earlier (in most of the cases! well, who knew about color chart, let alone ‘Gestalt’s laws’ , BTW you will soon learn Gestalt’s law :P)After the first week starts the foundation Programme : The base for everything that holds the future for you! It is all about polishing your skills that will come handy in your professional career. I believe, the foundation course of NIFT is a salient feature and hardly any Institute matches it (Yeh, you read it right, ANY). And for 2 reasons: 1. Compatible for novices (I hardly could draw a human figure and now . . . well someday I shall post!!) 2. You will be the best (atleast one amongst the best!), no matter where you were at the start. Within a year, you will be apt in drawing, visual representation, will exactly know the dyanamics of fashion, how it all started and how the fashion capitals marked their place. You will literally be abe to identify the designers just by mere a look at a particular style by them! (And, you will laugh off when any bollywood star is crowned a diva!) No matter how much you hate learning softwares, you will have to learn all of them A N D that starts now. Just eat and swallow those sessions. First time in your life, you will know that scissors and sharpners are indeed wastes. Cutters and DST will rescue your lives. What holds significance, is that, you will feel fighting yourselves over choices that you will have to make. NIFT will test all of your character and calibre (Mind it, character means your ability to stand to your decision and bravery to stand by what may be most appropriate; calibre means not how much marks you enjoy but how much you have made yourself worth of taking starts), though there will be thousands of chances falling on you to be an escapist - DON’T BE ONE. At NIFT, there shall be days when you will feel the loneliest and there will be days you’ll be a total swag. Don’t let anything deter your mood and temper to serve the best! When I was at NIFT, I made best of friends! I saw them get matured and grow beyond their capabilities. We failed, we cried, we laughed and finally it was a matter of seconds four years escaped on a blink!I just noticed, how much I have written. (Forgot, the question was only regarding orientation week!) Well, one thing you can start from . . . Don’t be anonymous.EDIT 1:I failed to tell exactly how ‘Foundation Days’ go. So, here it is:There is not a foundation week or a month or a semester but a year altogether which is, as I have mentioned previously one of a kind. Talking of Orientation Programme only feels like speaking only about Thupkas out of whole menu of Tibetan Kitchen of McLeodganj. However, I will write recalling July 2010. It was the last week when classes first commenced at NIFT Kangra (hence McLeodganj)Our first class was a casual one and Ashutosh Porus took it, it was regarding material handling. He made us introduce ourselves and so did every teacher/professor in his/her first class. It was fun, we spoke about many things, he joked and it was where we zeroed out on few Salman Khans of the class. The first week saw students mingling with their new classmates - batch mates (all the departments are mixed in the first year) and their hostel/roommates, discovering the beautiful campus and out of campus locations and places to visit. Meanwhile, it was time for goodbyes from parents who came to leave their wards for a beautiful journey with hugs, hopes and tears. By end of the first week, we had a slight grasp of various subjects and respective teachers that were going to teach us. Mind you, we still could not remember the names of subjects - only the ones classes of which commenced. The second week and Batch C + DFT were party to faculty from Delhi who was to take Fashion Orientation classes and she was amazing. Our batch still remembers her and owes her a lot - I do. It was a rigorous one week, we had to make FO diaries and it was fun and lo, at the end of 2′nd week we were done and dusted with the first assignment of the semester and closure was put to one subject. Facebook accounts of people who did not have one were opened (I am speaking of 2010, these days yet to be born has one and that is more ridiculous than cutting papers with scissors.) school friends and neighbors were added, (family members were yet to arrive on scene), Profile Pictures of Lilies, Roses, David Beckham, Zidane (who forgets the legendary head butt of the FIFA 2006? Sad but legendary and hence, kids, note it was Beckham vs Zidane before Ronaldo/Messi) gave it tough to recognize friends with a very common name. But, NIFTians being NIFTians, all equipped with DSLRs (from libraries/seniors) and sometimes webcams (we are creative)or if you had Nokia E12s and Samsung Corbys and Blackberrys had our DP ready. The end of 2′nd week was for the official ice-breaking trip. We and the senior batch were taken to Switzerland of India - Khajjiar. The week saw many couples hatched out of brewing romantic weather, freedom and a bit of love and benefits. It was a good trip - just that we spent more time on the bus than sightseeing. I, who came from deserts never minded that. The start of 3′rd week and all the batches were into assignment and classes, my favorite was IWAC and DIET, though I liked V and R, the workload was too much. Making straight lines, scores on them on newspaper sheets and waste papers only to come up with final ones on bond sheets/ final line drawings. There was no ragging but introductions and it was nice, we were the second batch of the campus and hence there were only 300 students in total - everyone could remember names of every other person, the teachers knew us all. It was homely. The end of the fifth week and we had a fresher party - parties at the campus are absolute madness - dance and laugh. The first round of breakups come soon after and then there are official twos. The workload gets going tough - you are after assignments but most of the time, as mid sem approaches the assignments are after you. Foundation is the toughest phase in college life. While all your friends in engineering, commerce or even medicine chill out and claim to study just before exams, you work off your limits almost every day. The semester DOES NOT HAVE vacations until Diwali/Navratri and while you are at home you receive love and attention from your parents and that is something you never knew existed at such levels. Still, you miss college and can’t wait to go back. The day you arrive back to college in late October/early November to 3′rd Week of December, with hardly a month to go for Semester end, you have seen it all - sleepless nights, assignments that suck all your energy - but not your enthusiasm, submission and the very FIRST JURY.To us, in Kangra, the winter came as we left for Semester break in December with thick fog over Dhauladhars only to come back in January first week to find heavy snow-clad peaks which speak - O Boy! What a Joy.…to be continued.
