Military service is forbidden because a Witnesses loyalty is to Jehovah through the Watchtower. This is why we cannot do the flag salute either. Certainly, in the last century, the United States ramped up its flag salutes to unite its citizens. But Watchtower falsely claims we are worshipping the flag and the United States. Even as a small child, I knew this was absolute nonsense. Americans respect our flag, a piece of cloth, that is a powerful symbol of our common homeland, freedom, and liberty. It sums up our constitutional rights and responsibilities. But worship? I know no person who worships the United States, not even those dummies in the recent capitol siege. Jesus ordered us to pay Caesar’ things to Caesar .But cults need to twist reality and distort it. Watchtower wants members to be the sole thing they worship and obey.This nonsense places immense burdens on small children. I grew up in the 1950s, during the Cold War. During the showdown over Berlin and the Cuban Missiles Crisis, our civics instruction was ramped up. We had constant drills for nuclear attacks. I had to report where every civil defense air raid shelter was in my neighborhood. My teachers encouraged us daily to build our own nuclear shelters in our backyards. I recall during the U.S. blockade of Cuba, a Russian ship refused to slow down. It looked as though the entire world might end before the Jehovah Witness prophecy had a chance to happen. Between the political reality and the Witness allure for Armageddon to destroy all humans but them, I was a nervous wreck and so terrorized. They bash the United Nations and League of Nations. My JW family loved touring the UN grounds. I imagined peace and diplomacy were great things that avoided suffering, droughts, pain. Well, Watchtower hates peace. I did not realize it at the time, but they are pickled in far-right conspiracy theories. Listen to conspiracy theories for a short while, and you will hear the same themes.Gandhi is a great hero of mine. So was John Lennon in his commercials for peace. I sing my heart out to Imagine and Let It BE. Heck, in the subway in NYC, people in transit frequently break out into song. But this is the reality. I was only able to sit in a Kingdom Hall in Northern NJ or NYC in peace without severe persecution and arrest because the Allied forces seized Europe and the Pacific back from hateful fascism and militarism. We sat because others fought. Just as others paid into welfare benefits for so many of them. I would grab my grey metal seat and try to restrain myself from standing up and screeching “You are crazy wackos! Lies”Their history and political analysis is so flawed. Elementary school students can clearly see it is wrong. But we respect freedom of choice in democracies. Not they have any structure that is democratic. It is a highly authoritarian group where no liberty is allowed. Watchtower rules them.Consider, too, that almost all Witnesses are very uneducated and likely very poor or working-class. It is not because they have some deficit in their brains. They are as bright as any human. Witnesses can also be a bit sophisticated about other faiths and governments, but have a giant blind spot when Watchtower is mentioned. Watchtower orders them to not advance their training and education. A simple glance of former Witness content shows how joyous those who flee are to complete their education. The military has long been a place where the disadvantaged rise, learn so many skills and discipline, and use benefits to go to university after service Mind you combat may be necessary. It is a complex situation. Those who serve offer great value as civilians. Especially since 9.11.Charlie Hebdo, terror attacks in almost every major capitol, we thank military people for their service.The essential truth is that Watchtower is a cult. Are they serving God or Watchtower The last time I looked God was not on the Governing Body of Watchtower. Neither was Jesus, Paul, or Peter. But it claims you cannot serve God and a country. Of course, you can serve God through Watchtower activity. Normal people will see huge concerns, but not Witnesses. Contrast helps us evaluate sources and truth. But Watchtower orders them not to research any faith matter lest they run ahead of Jehovah’s organization. Look, I once imagined Watchtower was run by God. But reality hit me. Patriotism, proper respect for civil authorities in repeated fairly often in Paul’s letters, the earliest Christian writings we have. Jesus repeats the theme or utters it first in the canonical gospels, which Watchtower accepts. It has altered the gospels, but it accepts them.This is a complex topic we could study round-the-clock-for our entire lifetimes. Casting military service as evil and pagan is convenient for them. They themselves cannot wait for their casting of Jesus as a great warrior eager to kill the rest of us so violently and exalt Watchtower folks. Christ is the Prince of Peace in messianic terms. As a small child I knew this from my gut, we live a real, physical world. Christ called us to responsible stewardship of the earth. Standing up to bullies and violence is important to human life. Please, I grew up in a city where chaos reigned and the police did little law enforcement. Watchtower will call upon police to protect them. They are secretly glad that the Allies won because the Nazis had many Witnesses in concentration camp. Although they claimed to be neutral, their president publicly aligned himself with the Nazi party. That was a punch to my gut. In recent years, they quoted a Nazi Lutheran theologian, executed by the Nuremberg war crimes court process, with approval to bolster a minor point. I could not believe my eyes. Indeed, I called the messengers liars. But they insisted I take my own look. Internet browsers are not kind to Bethel, their headquarters.So despite having so many African-American members, you can see they are not strictly neutral, but have a mish mash of theories pulled from far-right conspiracy groups and Anabaptist predecessors. The world is so evil to them. I cannot agree. Rather, I see balance. I am proud to be American. It would be so silly for me to draw the benefits of what men fought and died for and yet call them evil or pagan. My mom was expelled for not saluting the flag. Other family members went to prison for Watchtower. Peace and war are complex concerns. The actual historical record, not distorted by Watchtower, shows many early Christianity's. There was not one, single perfect belief. The Christian soldiers in the Roman Army were a key component in spreading it so far. Some Christians were pacifists. Some is not all. Food for thought.You will also find very few college graduates or professionals in Watchtower. They rank as the absolute least educated among all American faiths. Yes, members of Islam, Buddhists, and Muslims all rank higher than Watchtower. This is not because members lack biological IQ, but is a direct consequences of Watchtower mocking education and science. Members are urged to work to convert others to Watchtower. My own parents were criticized for home ownership. Members are told learning a trade or craft that requires advanced apprenticeships or training is silly. Armageddon will come any second. They will never use the knowledge acquired. College comes in for heavy criticism. Watchtower paints higher education as a place of sexual abandon, drug use, and chaos. It fails to mention that people learn in college. If our colleges were as evil as Watchtower paints, every country would need to send our elite special forces, marines, and send planes to retake our colleges. So Watchtower has very few professionals. Most professionals completed their education while a member of other faiths or secular belief. Yet Watchtower never seems to turn those services. Several people my age were removed from high school as soon as they reached fourteen. But there is no express ban as on military service.They also have this weird narrative that if you even defend yourself against a clearly evil person, trying to murder or maim you, that person may one day be your Witness brother or sister. Clear reasoning is not a strength.So Watchtower is often at war with families and education here.
