I spent $0.You read that right. $0.I applied to nine schools: Dartmouth, Yale, Northwestern, Amherst, Rutgers, University of Chicago, Brown, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University.How did I do that? I found the right organizations. The specific one I used in my case was an organization called Questbridge, which helped high-achieving low-income students attend elite colleges.They had a separate application that, in hindsight, is more complex than the Common Application. However, this application allowed me apply to all the schools for free, at once (excluding Rutgers). There are other organizations that allow you to apply for free. Or if you’re bold and lucky enough, call the admissions office and tell them that you have difficulty paying to apply, to which they may just waive the fee altogether.For Rutgers, I was recruited to apply to their honors college, so no fee there.Now what about the SAT and ACT? Well, let me tell you about the good ol’ fee waivers, they surely are something. The waivers are actually pretty easy to qualify for, which I did, but they are also easy enough to simply take from any guidance counselor’s office and simply use them whether you had the ability to pay for them or not, which others did.Great, now you’ve taken the SAT/ACT. You still have to send the scores to the colleges, and that costs money. Now what?I had a hefty list of multiple scores to send to each of those eight colleges, and if I did it the regular way, there might as well have been a hole in my wallet. Actually at that time I probably only had $10 in my wallet, so something had to be done. Being the crafty MacGvyer I am, I called each and every of the admissions offices and personally explained my circumstance. They all just told me to have my guidance counselor send them the PDF of my score reports. Simple.It was a tenuous process, but if you are willing to put the work in and play your cards right, you can probably buy yourself a nice mink coat with the money you save.
