Haters have tried to make hay out of this refusal, suggesting that his grades will surely prove that he was admitted to top colleges only through affirmative action.Grades are not the only grounds for admission to an Ivy League school, by the way, although Obama did graduate from Hawaii’s top prep school, Punahou. His exotic upbringing (i.e., several years spent in Indonesia) and his work as a community organizer would have been points in his favor. Anyway, what counts is not how you get in, but what you do with the opportunity once you are in. Al Franken has a stock answer to the question he still hears, which is does he ever think he was accepted by Harvard only because he’s Jewish. He says he’ll worry about how he got into Harvard when the Cabots and the Lowells worry about how they got in.Curiously, the same people who doubt that Obama deserved to be admitted to Occidental, Columbia and Harvard on his own merits seem less obsessed with the possibility that George W. Bush got into Yale strictly as a legacy. Or more recently, that Donald Trump’s son-in-law and close adviser Jared Kushner was admitted to Harvard only after his father gave the university a $2.5 million donation.

In addition to his vigorous promotion of the birther conspiracy, Trump also insinuated that Obama was admitted to Columbia University and Harvard Law School only through affirmative action, and that Obama has conceded as much by refusing to release his college transcripts. Never mind that no other president who attended college (including Trump himself) has ever released his transcripts, and that unlike Trump, Obama has released his tax returns.Mango Man even implied that Obama’s degrees are forgeries because “no one remembers him” from Columbia and Harvard. (Actually, many do, and even have photographic proof.) So either he got in through affirmative action, or he didn’t get in at all and has lied about it ever since. Evidently once Trump takes a dislike to someone, no accusation is too insane even if two lines of attack contradict each other.That Obama hasn't responded in kind is the best possible evidence that he actually is a Christian.

This applies whether the student is president of the United States or Johnny Nobody.Donald Trump would dearly love for all of Obama’s college records, not merely his grades, to be made public because, racist that he is, he probably thinks the records contain evidence that Obama was admitted to Ivy League schools only through affirmative action. That’s not necessarily so, and anyway, coming from the father of two children who attended his own alma mater (Penn) and thus may have been admitted as legacies instead of on merit, that’s especially rich in chutzpah.Having been forced to release his birth certificate because Trump stirred the birther pot so vigorously, Obama is simply refusing to let Trump yank his strings again and has chosen not to authorize Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard Law School to release his transcripts.What is known about Obama’s grades is that he was the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review, a position which is filled blindly, meaning the selection committee can see an application but not the applicant’s name to it. Therefore, Obama’s appointment had nothing to do with affirmative action. And he graduated from the law school magna cum laude.Trump didn’t graduate from Penn with any honors, with the possible exception of Most Likely to Contract an STD.
