What would you do if you realized the opposite of what you believed politically was true?

This realization has happened to me more than once. And each time, I took a deep breath and converted to what seemed to be more true.Conversion #1: Republican -> Social DemocratMy father was conservative and my mother was liberal. I made my choice and grew up with a Nixon button.By the time I was in high school, though, I had reassessed my views and became a Democrat and then a social democrat, practically a socialist. My brother’s enlistment and shipping overseas helped to alter my views (He was supposed to go to Viet Nam but an embarrassing incident caused him not to ship with his company, and he spent the rest of his enlistment in Germany drinking beer.) I became a long-haired, pot-smoking, anti-war activist, volunteering for McGovern, and arguing with anyone who would put up with me.{The 1972 Nixon landslide. I would later go to high school in Massachusetts, the only state that voted for McGovern.}I eventually decided that politics was a rigged game, and that what we needed was good people (like myself) to capture political power, to rule over the evil people (e.g., the corporations), and to protect the wee folk. <0752>By college I was taking part in demonstrations and sit-ins. I had my picture on the front page (above the fold) of the Chicago Tribune for taking over the Dean’s office at Northwestern. I was probably the most energized politico in student government, passing bill after bill, and involved in all the controversies of the day. I partied for a full week, celebrating Jimmy Carter’s ascension with a friend of one of Carter’s sons.{That’s I with hands clapping, right behind the raised fist.}When I dropped out of college and moved to Boulder, I took with me my politics and enjoyed, for example, a couple of Bonnie Rait concerts protesting outside Rocky Flats nuclear plant.{We’d march from Boulder to Rocky Flats, and then listen to folk singers in what we feared was radioactive grass!}And when I returned to Chicago, I proudly wore my progressive buttons on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, I, a teeny minority of one, enduring the eye-rolls of a very Republican group. But I can’t really say that this was a “major conversion”. I had been a Republican as a child primarily because I had wanted my father to love me. <0274> Around the time when I realized that such love would not be forthcoming, my concerns about racism and about the war had pushed me over to the Democrats and then on to the quasi socialists. <0339>Conversion #2: Social Democrat -> Minarchist LibertarianWidely recognized in my peer circles as a social democrat, my next conversion was much more difficult. I fought this conversion every single day for over a year.I’ve written about it in other answers, but let me outline it here for you. I was hired to specify a software system for a conservative’s startup. Every day for over a year we would entertain ourselves when we took breaks from coding by debating politics, thrilling in pointing out each other’s inconsistencies. Eventually, to remain consistent, my boss gave in on social and personal issues and on foreign intervention issues, and, to remain consistent, I gave in on economic issues. We finally arrived at a point where we no longer disagreed with each other and where we both were consistent. About a year later, I learned the name for what we had thought we had invented — libertarianism. <1186>{We spent a year creating a commodities trade logging and verification system on Apple II Plusses … oh, and becoming libertarians.}I can’t tell you how gut-wrenching this particular conversion was for me. Every night I would return home and bitch to my financé about what he had said and discuss what I was thinking, but my mind was changing over this to become more consistent. And my to-be wife couldn’t take it, for she had wanted to marry someone more progressive than her progressive family, and she threatened to leave me. <0404> And my friends couldn't understand what I was talking about, and they were certainly not willing to explore the ideas as intensely as I and my conservative boss had. <0459>And so, for years I was largely by myself as a libertarian, surrounded entirely by progressives who didn’t understand what I was talking about at all. <0986> I read what I could and debated with associates whenever my wife wasn’t around to kick me under the table. <0579> The few times I met with libertarians, I was surprised at just how different I was personally from them. <0365>It was a very lonely time, but all the push-back that I got from my progressive friends, even though I couldn’t convince them, made the libertarian philosophy much clearer to me — and I became more and more sure that it was more ethical, more rational, and more aligned with the world that I wanted to create. <1350>However, I lost interest in trying to convert (leftist) people to libertarianism. I just couldn’t find the words to help my progressive friends and associates in just one conversation make the long journey that had taken me over a year to traverse. <0618> And I thought the process as being impossible without a real commitment to questioning one’s assumptions and revising them based on logic and data. <0365> And that was something that wasn’t going to get done in one evening’s conversation with my wife giving me the greasy eyeball to stop talking politics.<0388>Conversion #3: Minarchist Libertarian -> NeoCon9/11 altered me significantly, but I think of this time as one more of post traumatic shock than of conversion. I wanted to kill those who had attacked my hometown and to be free to kill, I rejected the core anti-interventionism and anti-war fervor of my two prior conversions. It took me 2–3 years to regain my sanity. This was by far my biggest political error. But the conversion to NeoCon took only three days of weeping.{For a detailed, introspective exploration of this phase <1364>.}Conversion #4: NeoCon -> Libertarian VoluntaryistMy realization of how badly I had been manipulated during my NeoCon days made me a much stronger libertarian upon my return to rationality. I was still living primarily amongst progressives, who were still not open to exploring libertarianism, and I didn’t push the issue.A major shift occurred for me with Ron Paul’s campaign in 2007. I had known Ron Paul since the early 80s, and had even voted against him at the 1988 Libertarian Party Convention, but the little doctor had never wavered in his belief in noninterventionism and peaceful coexistence. He had been one of the people I had been embarrassed by when I had been a NeoCon. But now, I was looking at him with new eyes — as someone who insisted on living ethically. And I felt ashamed for my authoritarian dalliances and lack of commitment to freedom. <1147>I supported his 2007–8 campaign, and took great pleasure in joining the many libertarians on-line. By 2011, I had found the small enclave of libertarians who were migrating to New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project, and I no longer felt all alone. <1246>This allowed me to explore my beliefs with people who knew a lot more about this philosophy than my normally progressive cohort.I had always tried to reassure my leftist friends that I wasn’t one of those “crazy” anarchist libertarians who didn’t believe in any government. No. I was a minarchist who believed in the smallest possible government that would still protect us from those who would try to harm us. (Ignoring who was the real threat here.)But after the NeoCons had double-crossed me, I was no longer in the mood to believe that the psychopaths, mass murderers, thieves, and bureaucrats who controlled the government were there for my benefit. <1294> And so I started exploring anarcho-capitalism in earnest, and I eventually convinced myself that even those parts of government that minarchists believed are necessary, freed people could provide. (e.g., defense <0707> and police <1200> and roads 1223>).But I didn’t stop at anarcho-capitalism. I started questioning even that! If we believed that people could voluntarily choose whatever they wanted — why couldn’t we have a society in which different people could choose different government packages and could choose to live under different economic systems? Why did we have to specify “anarchism” and “capitalism”? Did we, as the most freedom-oriented branch of libertarianism, actually intend to impose systems on others? <1347>And that’s how I became a Voluntaryist. <0572>My Next Conversion? And that’s where I sit today. It’s been almost 50 years since I was trading Nixon buttons with my grammar school classmates, and I have had these four conversions. But I’d be surprised were I to convert once again.I sit at the most pro-freedom spot that I know of:Do you want to be a capitalist, a socialist, a fascist, or a Quaker? <1088>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to be like you.Do you want to subscribe to a package of “government” services that includes Defense, Police, and Old Age Insurance? <1347>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to buy the same package as you.Do you want to support Israel or the Muslim Brotherhood or the Basques or Hong Kong? <1313>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to send their money to the same foreign people, dictators, and corporations as you.Do you want to give charity to parents who unschool, or to the Philharmonic Hall, or to a troupe of Scottish dancers, or to black, unwed mothers? <0728>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to contribute to your favorite charity.Do you want to use greenbacks or gold or BitCoin or virtual silver for your trades? <0638>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to trading using your preferred currency.Do you want to hang out with Armenians or Muslims or whites or Asians? <0839>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to associate with whom you want to associate with.Do you want to buy only drugs that the FDA approves of? <0994:>Great! Do it!Just don’t threaten your neighbors with violence to force them to not buy what you don’t want to buy.Do you want to have sex with …..And so on…Why, through all the decisions that a human might make, I see no reason to use violence against someone as long as they are not violating someone else’s body. For me to convert from here, it would have to revert back to a more authoritarian political position. I would have to convince myself that it was ethical to initiate violence against an otherwise peaceful, innocent person to prevent them from doing what they prefer to do with their own body, and I would have to be willing to enslave their body, as though it belonged to me, to my will. <1361>And I hope that I’ll never be that evil again. <1172>See Related:0752: What made you switch from anti-gun to pro-gun?0274: What psychological factors made you libertarian?0339: How could a progressive become a libertarian?1186: Who led you to libertarianism?0404: How did my spouse react to me becoming a libertarian?0459: How did your family and friends react when you came out as a libertarian?0986: How do I overcome my hatred toward conservatives?0579: How would you convince me to adopt your political beliefs?0365: Why are more liberals not libertarians?1350: What turned you from liberal to libertarian?0618: Conceptually, how do progressives disagree with libertarians?0365: Why are more liberals not libertarians?0388: Do you get depressed being an intellectual libertarian?1364: What was your biggest political mistake?1147: What do you think of Ron Paul?1246: Review of PorcFest1294: Are most politicians psychopaths?0707: How would an anarcho-capitalist society defend itself in a conventional war?1200: Could private police protect people in an anarcho-capitalist society?1223: Why is roads the go-to argument against libertarianism?1347: What would your ideal government do?0572: Are anarcho-capitalism and voluntaryism the same?1088: Can a socialist society be free?1313: Would non-interventionist libertarians want to protect foreign people from authoritarianism?0728: Parable: How could voluntary charity replace the welfare state?0638: What do libertarians think about the gold standard?0839: Is racism the most vile trait anyone can posses?0994: How would libertarians reform the FDA?1361: What taxation by definition extortion?1172: What is the strongest argument against libertarianism?→ Essays on <Becoming Libertarian> by Dennis→ Return to the <Table of Contents> for Dennis’ Libertarian Essays<, Becoming, Dennis,>
