Update (June, 2019):Of late Quora has been pestering me again to install the app again. It's truly obnoxious. I'm this close to deleting my account altogether!Why does Quora force us to install the web app?One reason and one reason alone:EngagementThey think that the web app will increase engagement. It seems companies like to have an app on your phone so they can show you notifications and get you to check their app or website many times a day. They want to make it an addictive experience. They're looking at Facebook with jealousy.Personally, I find that truly obnoxious behavior. I like to control how much I use my phone and do not like to let a website like Quora influence my use of my own phone. Additionally, the Quora app is inferior to the mobile website!I don't use Facebook or Facebook Messenger apps because they're designed to waste your time. I also won't use the Quora app for the exact same reason.The following two points are the reason I decided to post an answer to this question which already has one or two good answers.First. Controlling Device UseApple and Google are both recognizing that addictive behavior is not healthy for their $$$$$$$ bottom line. They are creating tools to allow users to monitor their device use and hopefully put meaningful limits on that use.Paradoxically, what Quora is doing here flies in the face of what Apple and Google are doing with their mobile operating systems.If Quora wants to respect its users it should really help users limit their addictive behavior and encourage healthy behaviors.I limit my engagement with Quora by only ever accessing Quora through the email digest that I get in my inbox. Otherwise I would spend far too much time on this site.If Quora were to succeed in getting me to use their site more it would be detrimental to their bottom line.What I would do is delete my account which means I would never engage with Quora again which means they would never get to generate advertising revenue from me or my content. They'd also lose my content.While I may not generate huge numbers of views with my posts I'm sure I've been responsible for a lot more ad revenue than the average Quora user.Additionally there is no compelling reason for this type of site to have an app. It's a news feed. Web browsers are perfect for news feeds! Why fix what ain't broken?I like Quora. It's entertaining. But, it's not top ten. If I had to choose between managing my time better or using Quora guess which one would win!Second. PrivacyYet another Apple reference. Tim Cook recently opined that privacy ought to be basic human right.Privacy is THE issue of our time. With a browser (Brave or Firefox) I get some control over what I choose to share with for profit UNACCOUNTABLE corporations. With an app that goes out the window.PS I completely reject the cost argument. Quora still needs to maintain a desktop site. Forcing mobile users to install their app will not stop Quora from having to support their desktop site! The additional cost of supporting the mobile site can't be that great.Anyway, companies will do what companies will do. Especially ones in the social media world. The only thing you can do is abandon them when they fail you.[Update 2019/2/21]It's been a month or two since I last saw that annoying prompt that could not been dismissed. Quora is improving. They've added an X to close the annoying yet modest notice. Bravo Quora. A step in the right direction.[Update 2019/5/22]Rarely do I see the annoying pop-up nowadays. I wonder if it’s because I’ve switched to primarily using Brave as my browser on mobile. Perhaps the pop-up code is being blocked?

The thing you download to “clear the viruses” is, of course, malware.They receive an email that tells them something scary, like “Your Amazon order for $214.73 has been shipped to an address in Lagos, Nigeria. If this is an error click here.” Or “You have ordered $745.18 in upgrades for Call of Duty was approved. To contest this purchase, click here.” When you click here, of course, you download malware. (I get 1–2 of these emails a month.)“You are being audited. Our audit shows you owe $500 in unpaid taxes. To see why we made this decision, download the attached file taxaudit.doc.exe.” You download the file, double-click, and infect yourself.Other techniques involve things that appear innocuous:An email saying “Invoice attached, please pay at your earliest convenience” with an attached malware file.A Web site that shows you an official-looking “Adobe Flash Player is out of date. Please click here to update Adobe Flash.” This is a very, very common way to spread malware; I see it a dozen times a month. The supposed “Flash update” is malware.Sometimes it’s even simpler. Sometimes it’s just an email with an attachment and maybe one or two words. The malware writer is counting on people’s natural curiosity and lack of suspicion. Here’s an email I got only a couple of days ago. The attached files are malware, naturally.There are drive-by malware droppers, often placed on large, busy Web sites using poisoned banner ads, but they’re becoming less and less common.What does the malware do? Sky’s the limit. Common actions include:Opening a remote control backdoor to allow the malware writers to control the computer. They do this to hide illegal files on compromised computers, use the computers to attack other Web sites, or use the computers to send email spam.Installing cryptocurrency mining on the computer.Encrypting all the files on the computer and demanding money to get the files back.Scanning the computer for saved bank, PayPal, and other passwords.Scanning any local area network the computer is connected to, looking for more machines to infect.Changing the computer’s domain name servers to point to malicious name servers controlled by the malware writers. So when you type, for example, www dot paypal dot com into your browser, you don’t go to Paypal. You got to a fake site that looks exactly like Paypal and the malware writers steal your password. (I helped take down a group of people who made fake DNS malware called W32/Zlob some years back.)Best way to permanently get rid of it? Hoo boy. Oh, man.Some Windows malware can be easy to remove; other Windows malware…less so. In Windows, the best way may be to reformat your hard drive, re-install Windows, and re-install your programs and files from your backups. (You don’t have backups? Ha ha ha, so sorry, you lose, kiss your files goodbye.)However, there’s some malware that can survive even a complete reformat and reinstall. In that case, talk to a professional.Honestly, your best bet is not to get infected in the first place. That means use good antivirus, of course, but more importantly, don’t be gullible. Train yourself not to be frightened by scary-looking popups. Train yourself not to look at email attachments you weren’t expecting, no matter how scary or intriguing the email might be.
