The Patriots do not play in Boston anymore, they used to be at Fenway Park but the team didn’t last long in Boston then changed their name under owner Billy Sullivan after the merger in 1971. The team name was actually given by 74 fans by the management group in hommage of the area’s historical heritage. The team then relocated to Foxborough to play in their new home Schaefer Stadium, which was a terrible stadium and a really bad area. Saw some of the craziest fights in that place, all of this quickly ended under the Krafts. Then Sullivan passed, the franchise was in between ownerships, the stadium didn’t have the criteria for the NFL anymore and James Ortweih was planning on moving the team to St Louis and right around 1993 Robert Kraft was in the bidding process and agreed to buy the team before the 1994 season for at the time a record breaking $172MM. You can see how many has changed, the licence Gillette paid in 2003 was $7M a year…which is $10M less than what the Bears were paying Michael Glennon last season to sit on the bench.But, the team always celebrates their Super Bowl parade in Boston, for obvious reasons I guess and partly because the area around other than Boston isn’t much as popular with the Patriots. Can’t imagine the Patriots planning a Super Bowl parade in Hartford, would be quite dull.But Kraft can’t go back to rename the Patriots the Boston Patriots for ownership rights, that wasn’t his franchise as well as the old colors (the heavy front red and blue-white stripes), that franchise is long defunct and relocated.
