PDF Editor FAQ

Are team records set by the Cleveland Browns accompanied by an asterisk if they happen to break those credited to the old Cleveland Browns, which was technically a different franchise?

No - just like the Baltimore Colts don’t.It all depends upon who retains the right to the actual franchise (not just ownership of the team). Some examples:Tennessee Titans retained the Houston Oilers record and history, because they retained the name (even started play in Tennessee as the Tennessee Oilers). Since there is no oil industry in Tennessee, it made little sense to retain that name, so they changed it to the Titans.Indianapolis Colts - retained the name and history when they relocated from Baltimore.Cleveland Browns - When Modell decided to move his team (Cleveland Browns) to Baltimore during the 1995 season, legal actions by the city of Cleveland and Browns season ticket holders led the NFL to broker a compromise that saw the Browns history, records, and intellectual property remain in Cleveland. Thus - Modell’s team (now named the Baltimore Ravens) was considered an expansion team.

When was the last time an NFL team changed its name?

Depends on what you mean — changed the city name or its logo? Or both?Houston Oilers to the Tennesse TitansThe most recent change of city would be the San Diego Chargers when the team became the Los Angeles Chargers. As far as the city and logo, it would be the Titans. In 1997, the Houston Oilers moved to Tenessee and became the Tenessee Oiler and then in 1998, the team became the Tenessee Titans. An interesting case occurred when Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. After the franchise relocated to Baltimore in 1995 it was sued by Cleveland and season ticket holders, so the NFL brokered a compromise. The Browns’ name, history, and records stayed in Cleveland and the league designated Art Modell’s team as an expansion franchise in 1996.My beloved Cardinals changed their name in 1994. When they moved here from St. Louis, they were the Phoenix Cardinals, but the fans wanted the name changed to the Arizona Cardinals — owner Bill Bidwill and I opposed the change, but he took no notice of me and gave in and the name change went into effect. I actually prefer Arizona Cardinals now. However, I did want the team to change its mascot for the longest time — the fact that you can kill a cardinal with a bb gun just doesn’t bring to mind unstoppable power or fierceness. But now I’m cool with Cardinals.Original question: When was the last time an NFL team changed its name?

Why aren’t the New England Patriots called the Boston Patriots if that’s their city and area like how the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins are?

Like many other sports team, why are the Arizona Cardinals using Arizona if they play in Phoenix ? Or why some of the New York teams called New York when they play in New Jersey ? The Patriots do not play in Boston anymore, they used to be at Fenway Park but the team didn’t last long in Boston then changed their name under owner Billy Sullivan after the merger in 1971. The team name was actually given by 74 fans by the management group in hommage of the area’s historical heritage. The team then relocated to Foxborough to play in their new home Schaefer Stadium, which was a terrible stadium and a really bad area. Saw some of the craziest fights in that place, all of this quickly ended under the Krafts. Then Sullivan passed, the franchise was in between ownerships, the stadium didn’t have the criteria for the NFL anymore and James Ortweih was planning on moving the team to St Louis and right around 1993 Robert Kraft was in the bidding process and agreed to buy the team before the 1994 season for at the time a record breaking $172MM. Which doesn’t sound much of course now compared to the $2B bidding process for the Panthers.Usually when teams relocate or change ownership so do their names. Like the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for instance, when Dinsey sold it in 2006 (ironically 10 months later the franchise won the stanley cup), the new owner decided to rename it, delete Mighty, and change the uniforms.Kraft who was a big fan of the Patriots and longtime season ticket holder, always said he didn’t want to rename the team. They only changed the uniforms and Pat the Patriot logo (who’s mascot sometimes has blue eyes and brown eyes, don’t know why). New England isn’t a state by the way, it’s a historical region that covers several states on the North-East coast. The marketing move, I’m not so sure, the Patriots didn’t quite make the same amount of money they do now back in the 80s. And then Kraft financed privately a new stadium, the current stadium for the Patriots which was not called Gillette at the time, it was the CGMI stadium, but Gillett signed a 15 year contract for exclusive rights right around 2003. You can see how many has changed, the licence Gillette paid in 2003 was $7M a year…which is $10M less than what the Bears were paying Michael Glennon last season to sit on the bench. But, the team always celebrates their Super Bowl parade in Boston, for obvious reasons I guess and partly because the area around other than Boston isn’t much as popular with the Patriots. Can’t imagine the Patriots planning a Super Bowl parade in Hartford, would be quite dull. But Kraft can’t go back to rename the Patriots the Boston Patriots for ownership rights, that wasn’t his franchise as well as the old colors (the heavy front red and blue-white stripes), that franchise is long defunct and relocated.
