What exactly is the difference between the science education systems of India and US-Europe, at the school level?

The differences at the school level are not significant, because most students in Europe and US have not decided on their careers yet. The differences at the university level are bigger and more significant. Here are a few of the differences:US / Europe Universities have huge funding grants from the national Government and private institutions for R&D. This is practical applications of science and technology to real world problems; and the cost of failure is low as it is external R&D funding. In India, the main focus is on implementing proven technology with a lot of hard work and consistency. They do not have the levels of funding that is needed to get the same results of the USA.US / Europe students have flexibility in choosing subjects, and students can change subjects for the first few years of college. This makes sure that only students interested in science and engineering get into these fields. In India, science and technology is seen as a pathway to a stable life; and high marks as seen as a gateway to get into these fields. This leads to a focus on improving exam taking skills. These skills (following a fixed syllabus, solving complex arithmetic problems, mugging historical facts) are often contrary to the skills that Nobel Prize winners exhibit (detecting problems with current research, taking risks, dealing with tons of failed experiments, learning from failed experiments etc.)Thanks,Abhishek KumarJobs Galore| What is the best place to study in USA?

How does LSE compare with Oxbridge?

While it depends on the area of study, LSE and Oxford and Cambridge are roughly on par. Many view LSE as a more economics focused school (not necessarily true: their Media and Comms department, for one, is the third best in the world—and it’s not for nothing that the school’s full name is “The London School of Economics and Political Science.”Other answers refer to the interview process at Oxbridge as well as the tutorial system. Here are my pros for Oxbridge, bearing in mind that I never attended:Oxbridge:wider variety of tracks for liberal arts/non-hard science students. The Oxbridge system has rolled out more than its fair share of astounding scientists, economists and political scientists. LSE simply does not offer as wide a variety. The college system provides a built-in, localized support and social network that LSE does not have. The historical impact of these schools is largely due to the schools’ long history itself. LSE was founded in the early 20th century. Cambridge had a fully thriving university centuries before LSE was a twinkle in George Bernard Shaw’s grandpappy’s eye.Local culture is integrated with school history. London is a sprawling metropolis with plenty of opportunities and amenities and events to enjoy, but despite the high proportion of students living in London, it is first and foremost a center for business, media and politics. Opportunities to get your foot in the door in either Oxford or Cambridge are harder to come by due to their distance from the capital. The alumni network is stronger—i theorize that this is due to the college system and the halls system at these schools, as well as the vastness of the schools’ network from its long history.According to my friend (currently pursuing a Master’s in Literature and living in Murray Edwards), class sizes are relatively small. The dinners allow students to mingle with other colleges at their university, eat food and chat with local or visiting faculty.Cultural rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge encourages school spirit and adds a playful friendly competition (the rowing race was last week and attracted non-Oxbridge students.)the beauty of the campuses is unbelievable.LSE:Founding theorists in major fields teach, research or have taught at LSE. You’re able to meet extraordinary minds in the local pub. Also, its proximity to major areas of business and especially law mean that you might bump into a judge or famous barrister while drinking a student-priced cider in the student pub.prime London campus location makes attending this school appealing. However, it also means that many students live far outside of Zone 1 so that they can afford to live and learn at LSE.Lack of built in social networks and opportunities can make one feel isolated, especially if campus or central London are far from you.the campus is adjacent to the Royal Courts of Justice (a beautiful building in its own right), close to the seat of government and major businesses and media organizations, and historical and cultural hubs (and touristy ones too.)I expect this is true for all schools: campuses don’t make much sense. Trying to get from class to class is a challenge at peak hours. Construction has blocked off exits, walkways, entrances and roads. Sometimes barricades will appear without warning. Still, the campus itself does not have enclosed walls, but all the buildings are close to each other, unlike our Oxbridge peers.Finish class, go to the pub, do some work in one of the best research libraries in the world, catch something to eat, go to a West End show just a few blocks west of campus or stroll along the Thames or to one of the nearby museums. Centrally located campuses are great.the school can be somewhat outdated in material, and insists on using theory without applying the theory to a larger perspective or in practical application. This may be due to the fact that some majorly influential figures and founders spawned these theories. The school is extremely cosmopolitan and diverse, with a huge number of international students. The process for accepting international students is very difficult, which means you truly have to work hard to be considered up to par against some of your peers.your closest green spaces are lovingly and carefully crafted gardens and parks; Oxbridge have countryside nearby if you need an escape.King’s College London (KCL)is our main “rival,” but no one seems to care much about that. School takes precedence and, without major intercollegiate sports or events, there’s not much point to the rivalry at all. In fact, many students feel a slight disconnect to the monolith that is the LSE.Londoners can be quite rude. London can be overwhelmingly crowded. Pollution and gas emissions can be detrimental to the health of at-risk students. The English, as a whole, are wonderful. But big cities citizens often get knocked as rude or arrogant. My boyfriend paraphrased a tweet: “London is the spiritual home of every dickhead.” This attitude can sometimes bleed into the minds of the students attending the school.having to call it “the” LSE. Annoying. We don’t call the University of San Diego “the UCSD.”The internship opportunities are amazing and recruiters from the City often recruit students in their second or midway through their third year.LSE = Let’s See Europe. Public transport and proximity to many London airports make LSE an ideal school for those who want to travel on their admittedly infrequent low-work days.the international nature of the school means that open discussion can be facilitated with a diverse range of viewpoints. Sill many of the theories provided can be argued against on the basis of Eurocentricism. Not sure how far an LSE degree goes in other countries. Guess I’ll find out next year when I go begging for a job with my tear-stained CV and dissertation. Cambridge and Oxford have much more representation in media and cultural consciousness than LSE.Everyone is doing something fascinating and doing their best to contribute to old or nascent areas of study. If there are no books or dissertations on a subject, then someone at the LSE will start studying and contributing. Many professors are erudite, eloquent speakers and experienced educators—but many have not worked in a field outside of academia. This can be rough for students who don’t intend on entering academia as a career, as sometimes, theory will be too dense or too useless to apply professionally. The sheer stupidity of the formative/summative system. The feedback system is underdeveloped and largely unhelpful. Each class is technically one hour long per week, with a one hour seminar, but the classes start and end five minutes late and early (respectively) due to the traffic jam that can occur. The total teaching time for a single class will be 100 minutes, which, frankly, doesn’t allow for a comprehensive discussion/lecture on some dense theoretical material. Doing the readings in advance is required, but sometimes feels inadequate. The entire place is in dire need of refurbishment. Some buildings (*cough* KSW *cough*) are death traps in the event of an emergency. Also, the architecture is weirdly brutalist and…not very pretty.free extracurricular talks, classes (salsa dancing, music, speedreading, English language support) and other local events are always offering.Have 45 minutes around noon? Go to the man with the curry street food cart in the student plaza. Eat his healthy, homemade and free vegetarian food and take a stroll around Lincoln’s Inns Fields. Meet some friendly doggos who are frequent visitors. Cry inside about how much you miss your dog. London is your oyster.Fewer Oxbridge elite: fewer students, from both international and national backgrounds, have “bought or inherited” their places in the class. You’re judged anonymously and gain when you give.Long answer. If it seems like I’m anti-LSE, I’m not! I think it’s a wonderful institution, as are Oxford and Cambridge. I just have more specific gripes about LSE because I go there. As it is, LSE is a wonderful place with a thriving and active student populace, but it is a very different culture there than the Oxbridge system, though it is on par with them for academics alone.
