PDF Editor FAQ

Does homeschooling work in India? Why?

Awesome choice.Let's look at how we got to this stage first.I will assume you have no knowledge about it and also the child is about 6 or 8 years old.The child has a condition that is not permitting her to study in a regular school. Now what type of conditions inhibits a child from going to school?I will not consider financial issues. I will mainly focus on other conditions and assume that the child has a condition and that you will be teaching her.So now comes the next part. Which syllabus to follow? Do you have the time? Can you spare that time? Will you be able to cater for her social well being? Now, if the child has a physical condition and is not able to move physically then I strongly recommend sending the child to school. (Please consult a pediatrician before doing this, the child should be certified before you take that step) There are many facilities available nowadays and a child counselor can help the child cope with the school environment. If the child has a condition of dyslexia or autism. Then please research before you proceed.Questions to consider:-How severe is the condition?- Is the situation so profound that the child cannot fit in the regular school system at all?- Is the child able to perceive and understand the condition and the limitations surrounding it?- Should you take up NIOS or CBSE or IGCSE syllabus for the child?(research well on this).-What facilities is each education board providing for such children?- Are the books available for the child in the bookstore for that academic year?- Does the child have any exposure to other children if homeschooled?- How many hours can you dedicate?- Can the child take the pressure for that many hours of studying at home?- Will you be able to have a "me" time? This is important as the initial stress is very high. So, let's look at the advantages and disadvantages now.Advantages:- The risk of the child falling sick is low.-Timetable is flexible and child can study at her own pace.- No distraction other than TV and uninvited guests.- Both (mother and child) develop a special bond and can communicate better with each other.- Mother learns the way the child learns.(very important- I will cover this in a while)- Travel to school is zero.- Child gets to eat fresh home cooked food.- Always under the mother's eye (positively).- Child can pursue his/her hobby/sport at ease and remain consistent.Disadvantages:- Child is limited to the current surrounding and may feel irritable if not taken out for sometime.- The child can be stressed out if the mother is unable to grasp or is not open to learning the way the child chooses to learn.- It can be difficult and very very stressful in the beginning. I cannot emphasis the "very" part more than this. If you are ready to face the challenge then go ahead. Mind you both will be under extreme pressure.- Clashes of who is right and what is right happen a lot of time in the beginning.- If the mother is unable to understand the topic it becomes difficult to impart that knowledge to the child.- Mother will need her "me" time and it is very important as this may hinder the mental and physical well being.- Child may or may not develop inferiority complex. This has to be monitored at all stages.- The immunity that the child develops when playing with other children might g0 down. It is important for the child to develop her own immunity.- If the husband is not very broadminded or open about the situation then there could be frequent quarrels between husband and wife.- The socializing part is not very important but yes, it will be an added advantage if the child can interact with different personalities.Optional read:So, finally I get to tell my part of the situation. My daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia in June 2015. We knew the school she was going to was not very well equipped to handle children like her. Though they were cooperative in all that we were asking them to do for her. We were novice too. Though her condition is moderate. Her self esteem and confidence was below zero. My wife and I together decided that we need to home school her for sometime. Initially we took her for therapy and it was taking a toll on her as the therapy center was quite a distance away. We tried to put her in another school and thought she might do well there and the stress increased on her further as the principal was confident but not flexible. So we took her out right away. The first few days went in researching on what is the best syllabus to follow for such children. We researched more. Came to know that such children are normal and they have a different method of learning. Researched some more and finally started the journey of homeschooling. This was a journey of eight months and very fruitful. We had lots of fun. She learnt a lot of things. My wife learnt the way she learns ( we are still discovering new ways and it is very interesting). I learnt a lot about her and her condition. She had a friend in that building and so the socializing part was taken care off. We noticed that she has picked up well and convinced her to go to school. Her self esteem and confidence had risen. So now she is going to a school where all the teachers and the principal is made aware about her condition and what steps need to taken to keep he self esteem high.Believe me the first couple of months were a torture in terms of trying to understand how to make her study. She cried, my wife cried and I was virtually going mad. It simmered down after sometime. It was blissful after that. Now my wife knows exactly what to do to make her study after her school. By the way that is another journey. Once the child comes back from school and you have make her study. Coming to think of it. It is worth the effort.I wish you well and I hope you find success for your daughter and yourself. Let me know if you need more information.Update as on 11/7/2018:So from what I posted last in Aug 2016, it has been quite dramatic for me and my family ever since, after the first semester in the school she was admitted in, my kid’s confidence once again started to deteriorate.Update as on 5/22/19:My daughter is now full time home schooled. The decision was taken after once again changing schools and after noticing her confidence deteriorating right after the first semester. The last school was an expensive one, they promised the stars and the moon. There was suppose to be a special educator and it was of no use or help as they never shared the feedback even after letting them about our daughter’s condition. We have taken up a subscription from ByJus and she practices her math’s and science from that. Other subjects involve social science and language of her choice apart from English.Website to consider for learning:Wolfram|Alpha: Making the world’s knowledge computableKhan academy. For practical learning, My wife and I are personally taking time out to ensure she gets the necessary exposure. One major advantage here is that there is no restriction to wait for holiday seasons to take her out to different places and in such places she learns practically. For example we took her for scuba diving, she learnt a lot from that, from the level of what gas is used in the cylinder and what is the practical use of the cylinder to the description of the diving suit to the experience under the sea water, the taste of sea water, the flora and fauna under the water, the practical feel of buoyancy etc., the list can go on.We have now settled for IGCSE syllabus, after comparing it with NIOS, Please research from your side on the differences, probably you may want go with NIOS. Both have strong merits. We are directly aiming for 10th boards for our kid.Look out for schools that accept independent candidates.

Can you explain the tracking methods used in homeschooling? E.g. How do you keep track of your child's GPA (grade point average)? Are you permitted to grade on a curve? What GPA is required for a diploma?

Caveat: this varies based on individual homeschoolers! But here’s a summary. In New York State, homeschoolers are required to submit paperwork to the local school district - usually via a “special programs coordinator”.In addition to an IHIP (Individualized Home Instruction Plan, basically stating your intention to homeschool that year), homeschoolers need to submit quarterly reports to the district. Those get saved and kept on file - and presumably, the homeschooler maintains an identical file! The idea is that those quarterly reports contain some sort of grade. For elementary work, that’s generally along “satisfactory” lines. For high school work, a letter grade would be applied. So already, you have 4 officially recorded grades per year. Then comes the end of the year standardized test or evaluation. The results of that become a permanent part of your child’s record, as well.Combine those 5 grades and you have a very accurate summary of the child’s grade each year, officially recorded and archived within the local school district as well as the homeschooler’s records… ideally both digital and in print. Now, I can hear it coming - and presumably this is more of what you’re asking:How do those quarterly grades come to be? What is daily record keeping like?Well, most homeschoolers tend to use some sort of formal curriculum for the “big” subjects - math, high school science, history, etc. - and those curricula include unit tests and reviews. So an accurate snapshot of the student’s grasp of the studies can be grabbed from those unit tests. That, in my experience, is what lands on quarterlies.Where does that unit test score get recorded? Well, some homeschoolers would log all of that in their planner or record keeping book. But quite honestly most of the homeschoolers I’ve ever known, including us, simply had a folder where all those reviews and tests would land. Quarterly time simply meant opening the folder and grabbing those grades - and if reviews are being factored in as well as unit tests, taking an average. If all else fails, or one feels the need to grade more accurately, there should be a notebook with each day’s work and a grade on it. Averaging those is certainly possible. As long as at the end of the year the district has five numbers or letters in front of them, you have met their requirements in New York State. As for receiving a diploma? Well, homeschoolers will not receive that from any state officially. Homeschoolers working with an umbrella school can receive a diploma from the umbrella school; that may or may not be officially recognized by the state.Any homeschooling family can print off a diploma. I do not know of any district in New York that would require a certain GPA; what is required for each year is hours of instruction. Provided you’ve met the required hours of instruction, that school year is complete - including your senior year. What most homeschoolers who want an official diploma do is go take the GED, or whatever they started calling it in the last few years. That becomes an official grade, and in my experience is all that most colleges and employers want to see.But a transcript of the yearly scores, quarterly scores, and GED results could definitely be used to find a final GPA. Serious homeschoolers will maintain that; those without college plans (many homeschoolers opt for college, while many more go straight into the workforce or opt for higher vocational education or another non traditional path) will probably not care as much about the GPA.But to the school district? It’s just about hours of instruction.

Can a 15-year-old homeschool student work a job during the day (during public school hours)?

Yes, you just need to get a work permit. High Schools students who have work permits or job experience classes work during the day all the time.
