I’m proud to say that India is the home of few of the finest special forces in the entire world.These are from the tri-services as well as from the central armed police forces.Let’s see the enemy’s worst nightmare from all the three branches of the services:Indian Army:Para (Special Forces)Also known as Red Devils (because of the maroon beret they wear), the unit was constituted in 1966 & is headquartered in Bangalore.Attached with the Parachute regiment & also known as the Para SF, it is the special operations unit of the Indian Army & is 9 battalion strong (5,000 and 6,000 commandos).Para (SF) is usually tasked with the toughest missions of the army that a usual infantry battalion is not suited to undertake. These commandos operate in assault teams, which work individually behind enemy lines. They regularly have missions such as special operations, direct action, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, counter-proliferation, counter-insurgency, seek and destroy and personnel recovery.Their parent unit, the parachute battalion is in fact one of the oldest airborne units in the world (1941). The Parachute regiment has the following structure:14 regular battalions5 Airborne Infantry Battalions9 Special Forces Battalions1 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion2 Territorial Army Battalions.The Para SF has tried raising new battalions to augment the strength, however the task has not been completed due to the incredibly tough selection phase.How tough are they ?Every aspiring commando in Para SF is a volunteer (both fresh recruits & regular soldiers). In order to be a Para (Special Forces), all personnel are first required to qualify as Paratroopers first.There is a probation period which “tests” the soldier if he is fit for the grueling commando life or not. This probationary period lasts 6–9 months for the special forces (SF).Once selected the candidates advance to the SF selection, which takes place twice a year in the spring and the autumn term. At 3.5 years of training, it is one of the longest and toughest training regimens in the world,the applicant is exposed toSleep deprivation,Humiliation,Physical exhaustion,Mental and physical torture.In this entire duration of probation period, all soldiers & officers are stripped of their ranks & are treated equally. There is no training manual, so there is no specific routine. Throughout the course, probationers are motivated to opt to leave the course. Only the toughest of the tough survives.All nine Para SF battalions select the candidates according to the specialization of the battalions & each has a different selection parameter. For example the 10 Para (SF) who are also known as Desert Scorpions select the candidates primarily for desert warfare & the 9 Para (SF) specializes in Mountain warfare & has a 9 month long probation. The probationers have to be exceptionally tough.Probationers go without food for 4 daysThey have to minimize water consumption up to 1 liter water for 3 daysThey should be able to go without sleep for 7 daysA 10 kg sandbag become a permanent buddy for the probationer.Routine speed marches and runs of 10 km, 20 km, 30 km and 40 km with full battle gears are conducted.Hours of rigorous exercises & skill training such as blindfolded team assembly, weapons training, demolition, navigation, communication, medical and cooking skills.Probationers must be exceptional navigators in areas where there is no network signal, no roads or landmarks and sand dunes that keep shifting every night.The Day 45 of probation starts with the 36 hour stress test which includes 36 hours of continuous exercises, maneuvers, insertion, extraction where the probationers stress capabilities are put to the test. It has:10 km speed march with 30 kg battle loadsLifting buddies over long periodsWeight shifting where 40 litres of jerry cans, tyre trucks and wooden logs up to 85 kg in weight have to be shifted & moved physically.During the 11th hour, trial by water is conducted which is simulated drowning, allowing only the bare minimum oxygen over a long period of time.The hands are also tied later on and using ropes the probationers are pulled under water to test hypoxia & blackouts.The first 16 hours are completed without a drop of water or food.This is followed by immediate observational skills and operation tactics under loud noises & flashy lights where the probationer has to recall objects placed in their exercises.This is followed by 10 km speed march and 6 hours of continuous exercisesFinally once the probationer is totally fatigued, practical combat skills are tested such as placing & response to ambushes, making camps, stretchers and simulated evacs etc.The Para SF 100 km endurance run is a must for all probationers where they have to run 100 km with 10 kg backpack & 7 kg personal weapon. The time taken averages between 13 to 15 hours. That’s insanely athletic.And this is just probation, the training is yet to begin.Not surprising that the attrition rate is very high, and selection rarely exceeds a tiny 10 percent. Those who complete the probation period and are inducted into the Para SF and undergo further selection and training. The routine in the training involves:20 km morning run daily.Infiltration, exfiltration, assault, room and building intervention,Intelligence gathering,Patrolling, ambush tactics, counter-ambush tactics, counter insurgency, counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, guerilla warfare, asymmetric warfare, raids and sabotage,Martial arts training, tactical shooting, stress firing, reflex shooting, buddy system drills,Close quarter battle, tactical driving, advance weapon courses and handling, sniping, demolition training, survival skills, linguistic training, logistic training.Night and weapons training and field craft involving 20 km treks with 60 kg loads and live ammunition.Weekly forced marches with 65 kg combat loads with distances over 80 km to 130 km and quarterly night drops with full combat loads are also conducted.Conducting SHBO (special heli-borne operations) using Cheetahs, MI-8/MI-17 or HAL (Dhruv) helicopters.Post all this the soldier gets to be a Para Commando.Needless to say these elite soldiers are few of the most respected batch of people in the entire army. Also they get the best of the equipment & support elements.Indian Navy:MARCOS, or Marine CommandosMARCOS Insignia.They are the naval counterpart of the Para Special forces. Officially called the Marine Commando Force, MARCOS was raised in 1987 by the Indian Navy. They routinely undertake special missions in Jammu & Kashmir region & are reputedly called the “Dadhiwala Fauj” owing to their bearded disguise. The MARCOS presently has approximately 2,000 personnel, though its actual strength remains classified.They are trained on the lines of the US Navy SEALs. But the MARCOS training is adapted accordingly to Indian conditions & is improvised to be tougher than that of SEALs. One Marine commando happened to undertake the SEAL training course & passed with “ease”.MARCO operations are usually meant to be conducted in support of Naval forces, although MARCOS are also deployed actively in various other domains such asProviding support to Amphibious operations.Special surveillance and Amphibious reconnaissance operations.Clandestine operations inside hostile territory, including diving operations and special Raid.Direct actionHostage rescue operations.Counter-terrorism operations.Asymmetric warfare.Foreign internal defense.How tough are they?All MARCOS commandos are males & are selected in their early 20s. The selection standards are extremely high & the 2 year long training takes place at INS Abhimanyu which is the home of MARCOS.Like the Para SF, all MARCOS commandos has to be parachute qualified.But unlike the Para SF which has month long probation, the MARCOS has a 3 day long, physical fitness test and aptitude test in which 80% of the candidates are screened out. A Further screening process is known as 'hell's week' which is similar to the USN SEALs training. This involves a high degree of physical exercises and sleep deprivation.During the main training,The first phase lasts one month, in which they undergo many rigorous physical tests of which only 50% pass.For the next nine months, they are taught how to use different types of weapons, conduct special warfare techniques and how to gather intelligence from the enemy.The cadets start with basic diving and commando tactics and skills which includes firing while lying down, standing, running full-sprint, even backwards and looking into a mirror – with a reaction time of 0.27 seconds.This is followed by a year of training of specialized skills & close combat including Krav Maga.A notably rigorous training program is the "Death crawl" – an 800-meter struggle through thigh-high mud, loaded with 25 kg of gear and after a 2.5 km obstacle course that most soldiers fail.After that, when the trainee is exhausted and sleep-deprived, he has to undergo the final test – shooting a target 25 metres away, with a partner standing next to it.Due to the notorious nature of the training, the average MARCOS training drop-out rate is more than 90%.Indian Air Force:Garud Commando ForceIt is the Air Force’s counterpart of the Para Commandos & the MARCOS. It is the newest of the three & was formed in 2004 with a current strength of 1,780 commandos.Garud is tasked with the protection of critical Air Force bases and installations, search and rescue during peace and hostilities and disaster relief during calamities.While the Army might have provided some Special forces units to the Air Force, its units were always subject to being posted out on rotation to other areas as per the Army's requirements. It was felt that the specialized training that the air force would have provided to such units would have to be repeated again and again for the replacement units. Hence a dedicated unit named Garud was raised.How tough are they ?Unlike its counterparts in the Army and Navy, candidates for Garud Commandos are not selected from volunteers of other branches. Recruitment to the Garud force is done directly through airmen selection centers. Candidates have only one chance to become a Garud trainee & post successful completion of the training, wherever he is posted in the IAF, he will be part of a Garud Unit.Like the PARA SF, Garud also has a probation of 3 months. As you would have already thought, this phase, which usually has a high attrition (Drop-out) rate is conducted at the Garud Regimental Training Centre located at Hindon, UP.Garud trainees undergo a 72-week basic Training course, but to be a fully operational Garud it takes around 3 years. This phase of special operations training is imparted by the Special Group of the Special Frontier Force, the Para SF and NSG.Those who qualify, proceed to the Parachute Training School (PTS) at Agra to complete the basic airborne phase. A sentence of probation is like a warning, a second chance. It is offered in lieu of a jail or prison sentence. The probationer agrees to adhere to a list of conditions during the term of probation. If they complete the term of probation with no violations, they are discharged and the sentence is satisfied. If they violate the terms of probation, they are either directed to return to court to explain (“show cause”) why they should not be sent to jail, or sometimes arrested immediately and held for the court appearance.Probation can be supervised or unsupervised. When the probation is supervised, the supervisor is called a probation officer (PO). Probationers are required to report to the POs periodically, maybe once a week or once a month. During the meetings with the PO, the probationer may be required to furnish a urine specimen for drug testing, or bring pay stubs or completed job applications to show they have been gainfully employed or looking for work. When probationers stop showing up for their appointments and/or relocate without permission, they are termed “absconders.” They usually have active arrest warrants.Being on probation usually involves agreeing to a Fourth Amendment waiver. This means that the probationer does not enjoy the protections of the Fourth Amendment, and can have their person, home, or vehicle searched at any time. Depending on local or state policy, any peace officer might be able to order the search, or the search might be executable only by the PO. If the search reveals anything illegal, or anything prohibited by the terms of probation, the probationer can be arrested immediately.The conditions imposed by probation can be just about anything the judge orders. This is because the probationer is free to reject the terms of the probation and serve the underlying jail sentence. If the judge orders the probationer to wear a blaze orange t-shirt printed with “I AM A SEXUAL PREDATOR” in two-inch high letters whenever they leave the house, he or she can order it.Just about all probation condition lists include “Obey all laws.” The probationer is obligated to report any adverse police contact to their PO. Some state criminal justice databases will include probation or parole (parole is like probation, but is granted after the parolee has served at least a portion of a prison sentence) flags, so that an officer running a probationer’s name will be notified of the probation status.Some probationers have to wear ankle monitors that alarm if they go outside a preset geographical boundary. Removing the ankle monitor or breaking the “geofence” is a probation violation.Other typical conditions of probation:Refrain from use of alcohol or any drugs not prescribed by a physician, illegal or otherwiseObtain and maintain gainful, lawful employmentDo not associate with gang members or felonsBe at home between 9 PM and 6 AM daily (the hours can vary)Keep all appointments with probation officers, mandated counselors, and other requirements ordered by the court or POOperate motor vehicles only within applicable traffic laws and with a valid driver’s license, and a properly registered and insured vehicleStay at least 500 feet away from [known gang gathering place]Remain within the boundaries of [county or city] unless given specific permission from the POProbationers often regard the conditions of probation as horrible yokes of oppression, impossible for them to comply. I have seen numerous questions on Quora from apparent probationers who are seeking ways they can pass their next drug test after having used this or that illegal drug, or how they can avoid having to tell their PO about the ticket they got or the time they were arrested in another city. Most of the rest of us would characterize complying with such conditions as “living.” With rare exceptions, I could have been on probation for the last ten years and seldom not been in compliance with any of the above listed conditions, most of them involving lawful travel.If a judge finds you have violated the terms of probation, the judge can impose a short jail sentence or fine, extend or modify the terms of probation, or impose the entire sentence that would have been mandated had their been no probation at all.
