PDF Editor FAQ

What format would I use to write a letter to a Fire Department asking for permission to use their name and logo?

I would make a pixel-perfect mockup of what you propose, show it to some firefighters at the local fire station, and ask them who you need to talk to about it. Having someone at the department helping you connect with someone in public affairs makes things easier.Emphasise that it's not yet released and will not be released unless you get their approval. I would have mockups for multiple fire departments to instill the perception that you are choosing between multiple agencies to feature. :)

If West Bengal comes under the BJP’s rule, will the current peaceful Hindu-Muslim coexistence be under threat?

On 13 December, the occasion of Milad-ul-Nabi, a procession was going on in , a small town in West Bengal barely 20 km from the state secretariat. Suddenly the procession turned into a mob and started hurling country made bombs into the houses of local Hindu families. The Hindus were scared and fled for their lives and as they narrated the incident later, the mob seemed well prepared with weapons and bombs and appeared to have come with the purpose of attacking primarily the local poor and helpless Hindu families even without any provocation. Once the families fled the mob looted the houses, stole the money, jewelry before setting the houses on fire. The violence didn’t stop there, next day a Muslim mob came again and attacked the Hindu families, they looted the shops and set them ablaze. Policemen rushed to the spot but instead of protecting the people they warned them to vacate the place within two minutes to save their lives. The rioters were looting and burning houses in front of the police and the police stood there and watched.2. On 16th December, the Teacher-in-charge of Tehatta High School in Howrah district of West Bengal wrote a letter to the Uluberia police station apprising them of a tense situation building up. The letter revealed that some students of 9th and 10th standard of the school aided by outsiders, who were influenced by some local Islamic fundamentalists, had entered the school campus and forcibly celebrated Nabi Diwas (Birthday of Prophet Mohammed) on 13th December without taking permission from the school authorities. According to reports, those who entered the school premises forcibly, roughed up students and teachers, and also hoisted green Islamic flags atop the building. This forcible outside intervention in the functioning of the school led to school staff feeling insecure and communal tensions in the locality, thereby resulting in the school needing to be kept shut. This hampered the form fill-up of 10th standard students, who have to appear for board exams.3. For the past three years, a Hindu-dominated village in West Bengal is not allowed to organize Durga Puja. It may appear strange but the reason behind the denial is that Muslim families in the village have raised objections to Durga Puja.4.This is Mamta Banerjee, the present Chief Minister of West Bengal doing minority appeasement politics as because Muslims contribute to be 27% of whole population in West Bengal. having as high as 66% in Murshidabad district. She has started to convert the whole government system to appease the minorities and wants to bring Islam in every govt forms, jobs, etc.Someone anonymous's answer to If Mamata Banerjee declares West Bengal an Islamic country independent from India, what should we do? Will we have to give up our Indian citizenship?Peaceful??Coexistence??There are hundreds of other cases depicting the amazing peaceful Hindu-Muslim coexistence. But making this answer any longer won’t help.BJP is needed ASAP in West Bengal.

How would you have maximized your chances of survival, if you had been a German soldier in Stalingrad in late 1942?

Jay Bazzinotti already wrote an exhaustive answer, so I’ll just keep it short and simple. Knowing what I know now, this is what a German soldier should do in late 1942 to maximize his chance of survival:Before November 23, 1942: Stay out of the trap. The Soviet counter-offensive started on November 19 and their two pincers met on November 23. Many German soldiers near the perimeter of the trap fought desperately to run to the east, toward Stalingrad where the bunk of German 6th Army was because they thought more Germans meant safer. That was a terrible mistake. The right thing to do was to run to the west, out of the trap. With some luck, you’d be able to reach the 6th Army’s supply depots west of the Don and be quite comfortable there. After November 23, inside the Stalingrad kessel:Self-inflicted wound: when the Soviet trap had just been sprung, German morale was still high as they firmly believed that the encirclement was temporary. Therefore if you shot yourself in the foot or hand, nobody would suspect that the wound was self-inflicted. Also, you have to remember to fire through a loaf of bread to prevent close-range gun powder burn. Near the end of the siege only those with the “million dollar wound”, i.e. so severe that could not be cured inside the kessel but not completely hopeless, were evacuated, and the German field police (Felgendamarie) were actively looking for malingerers, many suspects were shot out of hand. And even those with the “million dollar wound” were often elbowed aside at the airport. Hence you would have to do this from very early on.Fake family griefs: If you received a letter from home on the first few days of encirclement, you should throw it away and forge another one saying that one or more of your family members just died, or were being terminally ill, and request permission to go on leave. Of course also you should do this from early on, preferably in November. Bribe your way out if necessary, if you have any wrist watches or wedding rings, now is the time to use them. Later than November and these griefs would no longer be valid excuses. If your leave expired before the siege was over, feign illness, run away - do anything at all to avoid being sent back to that hell-on-earth city.Surrender: If you were left behind instead of being evacuated, try to surrender. But you have to be very careful not to be caught by the Felgendarmerie field police. Of course there was still a pretty good chance that you’d be shot by the Soviets, but fighting on did nothing to increase your chance of survival.Stay close to Soviet guards while on the march to train station/PoW camp: Red Army soldiers like to take pot shots for fun at columns of German prisoners, just as German soldiers had fired at columns of Red Army prisoners in 1941. Angry Russian mobs also attacked German PoWs. By staying close to the guards, you’re less likely to be a target.Keep your full uniform: it isn’t only about keeping yourself warm. The Soviet NKVD secret police were really obsessed with finding and punishing Soviet PoWs who worked for the Germans (aka Hiwis). Anyone who was not in full German uniform risked being considered a Hiwis and shot on the spot.Be prepared to do anything for food inside a Soviet PoW camp: In Enemy at the gates, William Craig speaks of how a group of Italian PoWs retrieved excrement from huge latrine ditches and with bare hands picked out undigested corn and millet, which they washed and ate. German PoWs swiftly improved the process. Setting up an assembly line of sieve-like tin cups, they strained the feces through them and trapped so much grain that they started a black market in it. An Italian doctor came up with a more sanitary scheme to get extra food: when his roommates died, he propped the bodies upright in their chairs to make them look like they were asleep. As a result, Soviet guards always gave his room more rations than the actual number of PoWs alive. The frigid temperature kept the corpses from decomposing and the doctor could even institute a form of “lend-lease” with the frozen corpses, carrying them to rooms where increased rations were most needed. Many other actually resorted to cannibalism. Finally and probably the most important of all: have the will to survive: Many couldn’t stand the privations and hardship, they simply gave up to end their suffering. It’s actually pretty easy, in that cold winter of 1942, many starved PoWs collapsed on the march and were shot where they lay by Soviet guards. Others went to sleep at night and never woke up. Those who were determined to live did all sort of things to avoid such fates. Some stood together with a blanket or piece of cloth over their head to retain some warmth from their breath. They slept while standing, just like horses. Other lay down and slept but one would be designated to stay awake ready to wake the others after half an hour. Then they all would move briskly to reactivate their circulation. They were the ones who had the greatest chance of surviving their ordeal to live to see their homeland and family again.(Addendum: Another tip as pointed out by Bernard Mendoza in a comment below: Stuff your uniform with newspapers - if you could beg, borrow or steal some. And by the way, get rid of Soviet civilians clothing like girls’ shawls, shirts, underwear, etc. before entering captivity. They could protect you from the cold but that means you had taken them from Soviet civilians thereby condemning them to death, so if Soviet troops saw you wearing Soviet clothes, they would be pretty pissed off and they’d shoot. If you were a specialist with rare skills, you’d be more likely to be flown out of Stalingrad. Being a medical doctor, speaking Russian or better yet - being a Russian-speaking doctor would get you better treatment in a PoW camp. But it’s not like you can learn a language or master a profession in days or weeks, so I don’t think this knowledge is very helpful in maximizing your chance of survival.)
