I've listed the typical daily activities of a math grad student, but I haven't really tied it together in terms of any "big picture". So here it is --The primary purpose of grad school in math is to learn how to do research, to do research, and to write a thesis. The other things, like teaching and classes, are important but they are ultimately secondary. Working on research projects is really the most significant, important, and difficult thing that math grad students do -- or are supposed to do :-).It doesn't seem to me that research in math (or any other subject for that matter) follows any linear path or formula, but generally it does involve a lot of reading, talking and discussing, as well as, yes, sitting and thinking. Or lying down and thinking. Or walking and thinking. But the thinking does not have to be, and often isn't, as solitary as it is in the stereotypical image of a mathematician. This is what I would do in your situation:Step 1: Take the machine learning course in your school, and get involved in a course project or research to apply your learnings to a cool application. If the course offered at your school does not have a project component, you can always do a fun project yourself on the side or help a grad student in his/her research.Step 2: Start helping a senior grad student in their research and get involved in a lab doing ML research. You may feel that you don’t have the skills/experience to contribute much initially, but that is OK. Just by being involved in a project and observing how grad students approach an ML problem you’ll learn a lot.Step 3: Check out some of the cool competitions on Kaggle and try to build a solution that gets in the top 10. Start with an easy Kaggle problem. Also, do check out the best solution for the problem to get ideas on how they solved it.Step 4: Try to get into a good MS program or a job in industry and spend time working on ML problems, more coursework/course projects, etc. Also spend time reading the latest research papers in top ML conferences like NIPS, ICML, ACL, CVPR, KDD, etc.This looks like a long and arduous route, but learning anything takes a lot of time and doing Machine Learning is hard. However, as hard as Machine Learning might be, it’s also (in my opinion) extremely rewarding in that you get to work on really cool projects like teaching a machine to recognize handwritten digits, understand spoken language, or the sentiment of a paragraph of text, and the list goes on and on.All the best for your upcoming ML journey!
