So many. “Rights and protections” can mean different things to different people.To start, literally minutes after his inauguration, the White House removed all mention of LGBTQ issues and individuals from its website.It’s been downhill since then. Other than nominating several anti-LGBTQ people to judgeships, departments, and offices (including DOJ, NASA), here’s a sample (bold are especially egregious):In 2017:Rescinded the interpretation of Title IX to include protections for transgender students in public schools.Removed planned questions about LGBTQ people on the US census for 2020Issued an executive order removing the requirement that Federal contractors had to track their compliance with anti-discrimination laws for LGBTQ people.Signed a "religious liberty" executive order to enable policy changes that would allow discrimination against LGBTQ peopleSignificantly reduced HIV/AIDS research funding to the Center for Disease ControlExplicitly refused to issue a pride month proclamation in 2017Department of Education removed policy protections for LGBTQ students from discrimination at schools; guidelines also now explicitly state that complaints from transgender students about bathroom usage are to be dismissedDepartment of Justice refused to allow reporters to cover the DOJ Pride event in 2017Transgender service members can no longer serve in the military in any capacity (as of 2019—-rule took a while to take effect)Department of Health and Human Services removed all services explicitly for LGBTQ peopleNational Parks Service no longer allows the Pride flag to be flown at Stonewall Inn on a Federal flag poleTrump said Pence wants to “hang them all!” when asked about LGBTQ rightsFired entire AIDS/HIV Advisory CouncilIn 2018:Department of Health and Human Services created a department explicitly made to help health professionals who want to refuse treatment to gay or transgender people, including those living with HIV/AIDS.The State Department issued a new policy saying that same-sex, unmarried partners of United Nations employees will not be granted visas to stay in the U.S., even if their home countries do not allow for same-sex marriage. The previous policy allowed for issuing visas to these people.The Department of Justice wrote a Supreme Court brief arguing for discrimination against transgender employees based on their gender identity.The administration cut funding and shut down a research facility whose sole purpose was to study HIV. (They argued it was because of fetal tissue usage.)In 2019:Issued a waiver allowing Federally-funded adoption agencies to deny LGBTQ couples adoption rights if the agencies have religious objections.Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson rescinded guidelines that prevented LGBTQ people from being refused entry into homeless shelters.The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) no longer collects data on LGBTQ foster care children and their potential correlated abuse.President Trump explained that he’s opposed to the Equality Act, which would Federally protect LGBTQ people from discrimination. (No legal protections exist today, including in Federal employment, except by past executive orders.)Issued a new policy that the Affordable Care Act would not guarantee health care if a person is transgender.Began separating families explicitly because parents have HIV/AIDS in Federal facilities; they do not separate families in the case of other diseases, e.g., flu.Asked the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to reverse protections for LGBTQ people for employment. (It’s unclear what will happen with this.)Issued a statement that they will grant Federal contractors complete right to discriminate against LGBT people (via Department of Labor proposed rules) based on stated religious convictions.Department of Education no longer considers sexual orientation and gender identity protected under its anti-bullying policy. In other words, LGBTQ kids can be bullied and the DoE can do nothing about it (unless they want to for other reasons).I hope that helps!
