1. Plan for rain water harvesting. This is most important as it would help you in coming years.2. Cover at least 10 percent of area with trees. Helps you to maintain temp in summer. After 10 to 20 years when solar power becomes the main source, you need to have space for solar panels. Plan for them and the cables, battery in advance.5. Use two type of sinks in kitchen. One is to wash dirt and dishes. Another one is to wash vegetables, already clean hand etc.. You can direct the water of second sink to plants.6. Plan for a space for pets. In the future if you plan for a pet at home it would be useful.7. Think ahead for next 20 to 30 years while building a home. Have at least one bed room in the ground floor. It can be used for parents who can't climb to first floor to rest. Also, when the living room is close by some one can take care of them easily.8. Glass buildings are for western countries to allow sunlight as the climate is cool there. We don't have to follow that as it would increase the room temperature.9. The Windows lock should be convenient to use. It should not be much tiny and hard. It should be easy to hold and smooth to use.10. Plan for the cables for television to connect multiple rooms with single Antenna. Inner cables must be connected to accommodate this.11. Ask the switch boards at home should be at same height. For e.g. If the switch board at hall is 4 feet from ground. It should be same for every room. Some exceptions to special switches next to bed, television etc.12. Common switches for Light, fan, Bed light etc. For e.g. First switch is light, second is fan, third is energy saving bulb or bed light. It should same in hall, bedroom, kids room etc.13. Plan for indoor plants at every room.14. There should be a large space at living room hall. Don't use any showcases. Plan how the televisions would change in coming years and design the living room. 20 yrs back people were building a shelf for tv which is of no use now. Leave large empty space to accommodate big screens.15. Do the wiring at the roof to place a projector in the living room. This would be helpful if you want to use projector for movies at home. As the projector is at the roof, it would be convient to watch. Have to tell the electricians the type of cabling required for this.16. Have a back up plan for drainage problems in the future. See where can we dig a hole or carry some work for drianage problems. There should be an empty space next to current drianage area to extend it in future.17. Only go for LED lights. Even though it is costly. It would save money. Tube lights hanging on your wall after 5-10yrs would show the home as old one.18. While working on the main gates, also attach the mail box(not the small one, news papers also have to be placed) and milk box as part of the gate. If we buy seperate boxes and attch with string it would look ugly.19. Make extra wiring arrangements to the main gate. In the future, we can automate them or attach sensors etc.20. Charging sockets next to sofa. Plan for a socket easy to use while not facing them. For eg. While watching the tv if we want to plug the charger, we should plug it without seeing it also the same way near bed. We should my get up and put charging for devices.21. Inside the main gate check the level of home. It should be properly leveled to allow water to flow. It should not stagnate water because of improper leveling.22. Use colors which would give mind a calmness.23. Plan for car parking and sockets to connect to power in case of hybrid cars in the future. It would be useful now to use a vacuum cleaner or electric screw driver or tools.24. Plan for water pipe near car for cleaning purpose.25. Most important plan the home with exits easy for the elders and childrens in case of emergency. A window above the gas stove should be easy to open an close in a quick time.26. Always get in to detail of everything the engineer do at the site. Let it be number of pillars, percentage of cement and sand. Type of rods used etc. as they would affect the quality of the building and our future. Don't let engineer do which is comfort for them. Each angle at home and design must be taken care.27. Use plenty of water to soak the walls and pillars during construction to make it really strong.
