Each person needs a conceptual platform from which to operate. This is done to make sense of the physical world. We label this platform the ego and we adorn it with various conceptual accoutrements.The term “ego” was a concept coined by Sigmund Freud and it was placed alongside the “id” (the unconscious part of the brain which seeks specific desires) and the “superego” (social or integrational awareness). The ego can be considered as an organizational tool which is being rendered as an abstraction. It is an ongoing conceptual compilation which is used to direct a person’s awareness. The ego is an illusion. Its constructions are fluid and arbitrary. But, as our primary conceptual filter, it is our reality.An organism is a procreating machine which can transfer energy which has been gathered from outside itself, to utilize it for its own purpose. The most primitive ambulatory organism has orientational equipment in which to do this. This orientational equipment could be called the seeds of a human’s ego.For humans, a conceptual organization (ego) is created to augment a physical orientation. It is the “you” which is being juxtapose to the matrix which you believe you are in. It has risen from our awareness that we are separate from our surroundings. The human ego is extremely pronounced and articulated because of our neural complexity. It is built from the itinerant organism’s inherent need for a conceptual organizer. Our ego is “the little guy” who sits in the wheelhouse of our attention and conceptualizes about the what, where, when, who, how, and why of the predicament which he thinks he is in.
