Since the question asks about “things to know before joining”, I understand you like to know about risks , perks and status of this job.Let me start with perks. You're salary equivalent with that of commercial bank PO whereas in terms of contribution to PF, you and your bank contribute less than a commercial bank PO contribution. Whenever there is a revision of pay scale for bankers. Your choices are not automatic but you have to fight in Court for equal pay for equal work. Better late than never. Youre also eligible for DA and TA whenever you go on bank's work but the condition for DA is you must spend more than 4 hours at time. You're eligible for meagre HRA as you work semi urban or rural area. Annually you get a medical allowance of Rs. 8000 and monthly news paper allowance.Now coming to risks.The job of banker in rural areas is risky. You may feel leaving at 5 in the evening for home, nothing better than this but you're leaving a lot of work behind. Unlike commercial banks which use computer printed document, in rural banks you have to write documents with your hand. On a kharif day, you do some 40–50 documents and you can't write all of them alone on the same day. If there is a mistake in document, liability is completely upon you. To make document legally enforceable, you have to obtain revival letter for every three years from borrower who is mostly an NPA. That's the catch. Many retirees lose their retirement benefits owing to this non legal enforceable documents. So saving the skin is more important than doing business in RRBs.Now coming to status, you are working with thousands of farmers, women SHG members so you will be quite popular among them. If you pursue public relation it's the best job. They even bring for you their homegrown vegetables. They respect you immensely and you have the joy helping poor. I know the purpose of my job then. Their needs are simple. Escape from high cost debt. Many youngsters choose this job since they prepare to some other jobs like UPSC or SSC and Some other choose this to spend Quality time with family and to pursue their passion in areas like music, writing sice this job offers some time.
