Well if you really mean simple machines as defined in physics (levers, ramps, screws, pulleys (iirc), you have to consider each machine. (In fact, even if you consider more mechanical / electrical machines (electric drill, blender, heat gun, you have to consider each machine.If you are using a tool, wear safety glasses. If it is a loud tool wear ear protection. If it produces dust or fumes, use an appropriate respirator and / or ventilation, and / or a source of clean breathable air.If it is a rotating tool, avoid wearing loose clothing (or things around your neck like ties or necklaces) that might get caught in the tool and pull you into the tool (e.g., a lathe, milling machine, …), or the tool into you (portable drills, saws).If it is something like a saw, understand the proper way to feed the work-piece into the saw (bench, radial arm, or cutoff saw) so that the work-piece is not shot out of the machine (to harm you or something / someone around you. Or for portable tools, how to feed the tool into the work-piece.I especially worry about amateurs using chain saws — do the wrong thing while the saw is running and the blade will swing up toward your head (or some other body part).I can’t list all the possible simple machines that might be used, all the potential hazards, and all the ways to avoid those hazards. You should look into the possible hazards from any machine you use. (Try googling for the machine and “hazards” or “safety”. If it has an instruction manual, read it.)Just to give some ideas about hazards from simple machines — if you are pushing something heavy (with or on wheels or rollers) up a ramp, consider what will happen if you slip and the thing rolls back on you. Consider what will happen if you are using a lever to lift or push / pull something and it breaks, bends, or slips out of your hand. Never be under anything that you are raising (or holding up) with a pulley system or rope, chain, or similar. Consider what will happen if you are using a wrench and it slips off the nut or bolt head.Never work under something heavy (like a car, truck, …) being held up by a jack — block it up with suitable things — heavy blocks of wood, stands made specifically for the purpose, etc. The jack is made for lifting something, and may slip, or fail some other way, it is not made to hold it up safely while you work under it. (Oh, there was one “suitable” stand sold by Harbor Freight that was sort of a jackstand that was recalled because it could easily collapse if touched or bumped in the wrong way / place. (It is subject to a recall, and they will replace it if you take it back (I think even without a receipt.)If you use an electrical tool, understand how to protect yourself from electric shock, which will vary a little bit depending on the design of the tool. IN almost every case, plug it into a circuit with a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter). If it is intended to be grounded (by that third prong on the plug), make sure it is grounded. Take extra precautions if you have to work in a wet area.Be safe!
