I was on the jury for a criminal case and the defense attorney was flailing for any way to discredit the prosecution witnesses as his client was most definitely guilty. (Eyewitnesses included police officers who pursued and caught him, DNA evidence in the car, stolen merchandise on him, etc.).Public Defender: You said only three cars could fit in that road?Police officer: YesPD: (in a Perry Mason tone) Then why did you draw four cars on the accident form?P.O.: Because there were four cars. Format of question when I answered it: If a train hits a vehicle, do they continue to drive or do they stop no matter how severe the impact is?Only in the movies do trains keep going. I saw this in a Rock Hudson movie from the 1950s, where a fast passenger train blasted the trailer they were pulling to smithereens. [Correction: Actually (thanks to a comment by David Burgess), the movie was Houseboat starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren.]In real life, the train stops, though depending on the speed of the train, it may be a mile or more past the point of impact. Railroad and civilian authorities have to be informed. Ambulances may need to be called. There will be railroad accident forms to fill out. The damage to the locomotive has to be determined to see if it can continue safely pulling the train. Often, a relief crew has to be called out to replace the crew involved in the accident because they are emotionally unable to continue. I was on one of those relief crews one time, and it was the worst day on the railroad for me and the rest of the relief crew, even though the carnage had been more or less cleaned up.In a more humorous incident I witnessed, a car of drunks came up to a railroad grade crossing near a freight yard, and in their drunken stupor, they turned down the track, thinking it was a street. They got stuck, and a locomotive pulling a string of cars out of the yard ran into the car at about 5 mph, shoving it halfway to the next grade crossing before it could get stopped. The drunks tried to get the engineer to push their car to the next crossing, but he would have nothing to do with that. The cops were called, and the drunks were hauled off to jail.After grade crossing accidents, there are always requirements of the law, railroad operating rules, and probably the Federal Railway Administration to be taken care of, so trains can’t just keep going.
