What are some good tools for creating help documents using screenshots?

Considering the fact that help documents should be as clear as possible for the recipient, the best way to create them is indeed to use a screenshot-based tool that provides a step-by-step guidance through the procedure. Here, comes in handy StepShot Guides – all-in-one documentation tool that captures your mouse clicks and converts them into a sequence of screenshots presented in a form of a nice-structured guide. This tool could be used both for professional (creating SOPs, FAQs, booklets, company-branded templates) and home use (everyday instructions, how-to’s, etc.).The workflow of creating help documents with StepShot Guides is simple:Click on “Capture Process” – a button responsible for making screenshots with every mouse click. Choose what screen area you’d like to capture:Full screenActive WindowSelected RegionStripe of active windowOnce done, press “Start” and the capture process will launch.2. To finish capturing the screenshots you want to be included in your help document, press “Stop” (2). The screenshots will be presented in the order that depends on the succession of your mouse clicks. Nonetheless, you can change the position of the screenshot simply by dragging it. You may also press “Pause” (1) if the capture process has to be paused for a while and then renewed.3. In case you already have some screenshots created with the help of another tool and all you need is just to edit them, click on “Import images” button and choose the screenshots to be uploaded. To upload many of them at once – press “Ctrl” and select the images.4. Once you created/selected the necessary screenshots, the next step is editing them. StepShot Guides offers numerous options for screenshots editing:Select – a basic tool that is used to indicate an element you’re working withShapes (rectangle, rounded rectangle, and circle) – to mark important elements on the screenshotArrows and lines – to point at, underscore smthSequence numbering – useful in pointing out the succession of steps for the particular procedureHighlight – allows marking the most important infoText blocks – possibility to add the text on the screenshotOCR – automatic recognition of text on the screenshotBlur – mostly is used to hide the private infoCrop – allows reducing the actual size of your screenshot (with the possibility to restore the original image)Different colors to edit shapes, lines, and a variety of fonts for text5. What software do you recommend to prepare CreateSpace PDF book publications?

You can find and download Word Templates from CreateSpace that are already preformatted to various book sizes. When you are finished, Word has (like most word processors, now) the ability to export text into PDF format. Just make sure that all your fonts are embedded prior to the export. If you are on a really tight budget and cannot afford Word, LibreOffice and OpenOffice are free and pretty much do all that Word can do, just not as fancy in its layout.CreateSpace also has dimensions (and formula) that you can copy to create your own book covers. The calculations depend on whether you will use white or cream paper for the text interior, because the formulas are slightly different. For example: If you will use White Paper for a 6x9 format book. You will need to take your total completed page count for your book and multiply by .002252 which is the calculation for the spine of your book….if you have a 180-page book then 180 x .002252 = 0.40536 (in inches), or .41″ rounded off. You need to take into account bleed around the book edges and the calculations will allow for it..125 + 6″ (width) + .41″ (spine) + 6″ + .125 = 12.66″ which will take into account the front and back book covers — with Front being to the right of the construct..125 + 9″ (height) + .125 = 9.25″ The height is same for front and back cover.Although you can create the cover on Word, my preference is to use a photo editing program to manipulate picture and text (making sure that the ppi is at least 300) , then then use OpenOffice Draw, where the draw page dimensions would be 12.66″ x 9.25″. I would then half the 12.66″ to 6.3″ which would locate the centre point of the spine. In the page format I remove all margins, setting it all on 0″.I will then import the front cover of the book and orient it to the right, and the back cover and orient it to the left. In OpenDraw, I will make a text window for the Title and Author and rotate it and try to place it smack in the middle of the 6.3″ half-point. I will often pick a background color prior to importing the cover photos that will blend with the color of the cover photos.LibreOffice and OpenOffice are virtually identical programs and Libre has a Draw the same as OpenOffice. When you are satisfied with your design and there are NO mistakes, save it under OpenOffice and then you can export this as a PDF.All you need to do, then, is follow CreateSpace’s instructions for upload and review, and when the review process is completed you can either order a printed proof, or have your book posted. Don’t forget, if you get one of CreateSpace’s free ISBN numbers, to place it into your front matter, before you save your text as final and export as a PDF.
