I think this is more of a stunt than a prank, but it’s still epic.Here is the tale of the Great Caltech McDonald’s Sweepstakes scheme:(image: The California Tech)In 1975, a group of 26 students at Caltech became known for pushing the boundaries of contest legalities.McDonald’s held a “Win $3,000 in groceries and a new Datsun Z” sweepstakes. In the fine print, students Steve Klein, Dave Novikoff and Barry Medgal noticed the words “Enter as often as you wish.”The three realized the absurdity in this phrase and set to test the legal boundaries of the phrase.The only requirement the students could find was that all contestants had to fill out an official entry form - or a copy of one.So the students enlisted 26 students from their dorm to help with the prank. They programmed the names in an IBM mainframe computer to create 1.2 million entries.They then cut the entry forms of regulation, 3x5 contest forms and stuffed into entry boxes in 98 McDonald’s restaurants.Caltech student entries made up about a third of the total entries. The students won $10,000 in prizes. Becky Hartsfield was the biggest winner, who won the Datsun station wagon and $3000 worth of groceries. The students also won gift certificates.The students donated the car to the United Way and the money for the groceries was used to pay tax debt and for the computer and printing costs.This stunt created some moral panic among the media. They claimed that the students would use their prize money to fund parties.McDonald’s also was not too happy with the stunt. The preference form filled by you on the portal is just a formality, it wouldn't affect your councelling at all.After your councelling and before your provisional admission to the course, all of the details are supposed to be resubmitted by an official at councelling venue. You can get it changed there.Further, make sure to get it changed as hostel allotment will depend on this only.PS: Corrections will be done by the then official without any issue, however if some arrogant person is handling the job, he/she may scold you on the spot.
