Chelsea is more of a British “old money” neighbourhood than Kensington. Margaret Thatcher used to live in Chelsea before becoming Prime Minister. Chelsea nowadays is popular with American bankers. Madonna, pop star, used to live in Chelsea. South Kensington attracts the French and is more international than Chelsea generally speaking. You see far more young people in the Kensington area than you see in Chelsea. Imperial College, The Royal College of Art, & The Royal School of Music being major colleges in the South Kensington area; plus museums and galleries. Eg. Natural History Museum, & the Victoria and Albert Museum. Earls Court which is a hub for Australian backpackers also lies within Kensington.North Kensington, the Ladbroke Grove area, London W11 used to be an Afrocaribbean area, but has become gentrified. Properties in Ladbroke Grove now sell for £5 million or £10 million. Similarly Notting Hill, London W10 used to be Afrocaribbean, but properties in the area now sell for £15 million. Famous Kensington residents include David Cameron, ex PM, ( Notting Hill area ) & Paul Macartney ( Holland Park area ).South Kensington has a more lively feel to the place than Chelsea. Chelsea is very quiet away from The King's Road, that famous shopping street.
