PDF Editor FAQ

What should a person know about IIT Bombay just before entering?

I am graduating this year and also I have been a student mentor. So, I guess I am eligible to answer this question. Mainly, I would recommend:Never cheat during your stay at IITB. I have seen many cases in which students have copied in the exam, copied the assignments, plagiarized the codes and also cheated in cribs. Some of them are not caught while some of them are caught and they have to pay a heavy penalty in the form of grade penalty or FR grade or in worst cases, suspensions.CPI is really the most important thing during the stay in the institute. The first year is a reflection of your overall CPI. So, do study well in the first year and get good grades. This advice is for those who prefer easy ways over the right ways. ie those who run behind success.Study for learning and not for grades. This advice is for those who want excellence. Understand all concepts in the courses that are taught to you. The culture to study on the last day of the exam is detrimental. It never helps in learning and will not add up to your knowledge. Learn, practise and master two/three concepts each week. Try to be innovative and think of implementing them. If you can’t apply them, look for videos where people have used them in real life. This way you won’t have backlogs and also things wont pile up at the end. Also, you will feel like attending classes to gain more knowledge and you will have doubts to ask.Have a good study-life balance. Spend more time with your friends rather than online games, TV series or social media. This is the time to make memories and not just fritter away your time.Help others wherever possible. Don’t do RGGiri. That is the worst thing to do in your life. Not only help your batchmates, but also your juniors. They may need your help in form of insti/life/career fundaes, past papers, assignments, books, courses etc.Do not hesitate to talk to opposite gender. I have seen many of my friends who haven’t talked to any insti girl apart from some study related queries. This has a negative effect on your personality development. You should have both male and female friends.Try focusing on learning to speak English well, develop presentation skills, try to be expressive. For placements, do puzzles in free time, and for those who want coding jobs (core/noncore), after you learn programming, learn Data Structures and Algorithms from GeeksforGeeks | A computer science portal for geeks . For higher studies, do research projects under IITB profs.Take PORs only if you are very much interested in doing it. No point taking a POR just for mentioning in the resume. You are anyways going to remove it in the future. Also, you will feel that you are forced to do the work. For those who are good in acads, do consider going for a semester exchange. It is the best experience you can have in undegrad years. You will make amazing memories for life.Lastly, and most importantly, do not fall for illegal products. That will ruin your life completely. All the positive things that can happen in your life will never happen due to addiction to such products.

I'm a senior in college. What can I do to improve/showcase my quantitative reasoning skills for Management Consulting?

Good question. Analytical chops are a key requirement for most major consulting firms, especially given the data driven approach to problem solving many firms apply these days.Specifically, entry level consultants spend a lot of time collecting data from clients and analyzing this data in excel. The most important part of this process in not the excel modelling, but rather the structuring of the problem to determine what you are trying to solve and what information you need to solve it.So the question is how do you showcase you ability to structure a problem and solve it. You are not going to be asked to model something in excel in the interview, but you will be asked to structure a case and then solve it using some mathematics. I interviewed over 100 candidates and read thousands of resumes for a top tier consulting firm. Here are some hints at showcasing this ability to get the interview -1. Write an impact focused resume. Instead of describing your responsibilities for your various jobs and activities, focus specifically on what you did that drove impact and the quantification of that impact when possible. For example, instead of writing "Participated in developing advertising campaign for a prominent consumer packaged goods company", write something about the impact - "Created ad for a prominent consumer packaged goods company leveraging social media that resulted in 1 million impressions at a cost of only $10,000"2. Attend consulting events and talk with people. Leaving a good impression on people that you are intelligent and well spoken will increase the probability of you getting the interview. Once you get the interview, you will have an opportunity to show your problem solving capabilities during the case and during the problem solving test that an increasing number of firms are utilizing3. Get your quantitative standardized test scores up. This may not be relevant given you only have 6 months left, but in general a quantitative score in the top 25% is not good enough to get you an interview. When I reviewed resumes, it was rare to interview people with below a 700 (out of 800) on the quantitative section of the SAT / GRE or on the GMAT as a whole4. Show intellectual curiosity for analytics. This could come in the form of writing a blog about industries you are interested in while using analytics to describe your thinking. You can also take online classes for free on EdX, Coursera, and many other platforms which could be helpful. Additionally, you could take a more analytical approach to a class project, current job, or student organization you belong to. Remember, everything is about impactOnce you have the interview, it is a level playing field. The people that scored the highest on the resume screen are in the same position as the people that scored the lowest (while still receiving the interview). You will need to prepare for the interview, especially for the case portion, with a focus on structuring problems and solving quick math problems. I would recommend picking up a copy of my book Embrace the Case Interview which will walk you through the process of getting a job in consulting from getting the interview to landing the job.Embrace the Case Interview: Paperback Edition: The complete guide from getting the interview to landing the job: Brad Schiller: 9781494787264: Amazon.com: BooksHope this helps!

What are the various career opportunities in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)?

In recent years, there has been growing interest by various engineering product companies to perform design simulation studies at different stages of product development to compete in the market. This has consistently resulted in increased requirement of skilled CFD resources and proving to be a very good career opportunity for engineers aspiring to make a career in the interesting domain of heat transfer and fluid flows. However there seems to be a widespread confusion in the student community as to what skills are desired by these industries for a fresher to qualify.Apart from the few fortunate ones who make it to graduate through premium institutes (for e.g. IITs/ IISc, in India) are aware about the career path and directly make it through campus recruitment as a CFD engineer/ analyst, the journey for the remaining majority remains a challenging dream to pursue. The option then remains for these later students is to either follow the conventional route available into manufacturing/ production that become too monotonous and uninteresting after sometime, or struggle undergoing a part time professional training again spending time and money. It would be great if these students are made aware about the career path and the opportunities available in the domain (CFD) at the early stage of engineering. As per the definition “Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the science of predicting fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical reactions, and related phenomena by solving the mathematical equations that govern these processes using numerical methods (i.e., on a computer)”. The scope of applications of CFD thus seem to be wide in the engineering disciplines of aeronautical/ aerospace, automobile, mechanical, chemical involving primarily flow and thermal analysis studies. To have an overview of the role of CFD in engineering design one may go through the webinar by LearnCAx.Start Preparation:The best time for anyone to start the preparation can be the very semester when one gets introduced to fundamental subject of the discipline like:Fluid DynamicsHeat TransferThermodynamicsTransport Phenomenai.e. often the III semester or 2nd year engineering. This can serve as the foundation for many conceptual understanding to be developed further. One should focus on atleast the following three subjects:Fundamentals : to understand the physics of flow behaviourNumerical methods: to develop an understanding of how the CFD codes behaveCFD software handson: to appreciate how the numerical methods are applied to the physics of fluidsApart from the above mentioned core subjects that are introduced in the curriculum one should also try to opt for the elective subjects or project in CFD. The project phase forms the basic training opportunity wherein one can spend good time to develop handson experience with some simple academic problem gaining more insights. In case if there are absence of faculty/ mentor in the institute one should not feel restricted to take help of professional training programs or industry internships. There are quality online training programs available that can help the student cope up learning the software skills with effective time management and affordable cost. Also one should remember that you cannot and need not learn everything before starting a career into CFD as it's a very broad subject however the minimum expectations that remains is to be very good at fundamentals mentioned in the above subjects. It is generally not a strict pre-requisite for a CFD engineer to hold a Master's degree unless the opening is for the position of a CFD Development Engineer. For the position of CFD Application Engineer, for which there are more job opportunities there is no such stringent condition.Job Profiles:The typical profile for the development, testing or application CFD engineer positions need to have the following eligibility and skill sets:Profile: CFD Development EngineerThe popular softwares one may need to have exposure can be:CAD software : CATIA, UG, ProECFD Pre-processing software : ICEM CFD, GAMBIT, T-Grid, GridZ, etc.CFD Solver : STAR-CCM+, ANSYS FLUENT, ANSYS CFX, FlowZ, etc.Profile: CFD Application EngineerProfile: CFD Testing EngineerEntry Barriers:The typical stages one needs to go through the selection process for the job profile of as CFD Engineer are as follows:Resume Shortlist :One should always remember the position he/ she seeks. The resume should speak more about the specifications matching the requirements and may be this would require the reverse approach planning at early stage. The seminar and project work done in Bachelors or Masters Level can be the topic to describe in greater detail as would be of relevance or direct interest for the hiring company. Companies generally look out for:University/ InstituteGrades in UG/ PGProject or Seminar workedIndustry InternshipPublication workThough the industry internship and publications are not a compulsion in the engineering curriculum definitely add weightage to your resume as they indicate your industrial exposure, project management and communication skills. One can also expect to invite maximum questions in the interview session (if qualified for) from the data mentioned in resume and hence should be seriously considered.Written Test :The written test is the second screening after the resume shortlisting. It can be based on the range of technical subjects of engineering like;Fluid Dynamics,Thermodynamics & Heat TransferQuantitativeSoftware testThe general attitude student can keep qualifying for this round is to keep abreast with the fundamental subjects learned in 4 years of engineering. Some organizations also do conduct software tests with some typical problem to test your skills on the software front.Personal Interview :If you qualify to get shortlisted and pass the written test, the technical interview round may be probably the last step to your hiring. Hence it is supposed to be the serious task wherein having tested you on the technical aspects through your written and software tests, the company is now interested to know you as a person and your understanding of the concepts that would matter your job profile. The general questions can be to know your personal attributes like subject understanding and clarity, communication skills and confidence. The Learning Path :Recently there have been a great enrichment in online learning content freely available on internet from top notch Universities/ Institutes like MIT, Stanford, NPTEL (from IITs and IISC) that can be great help for the fundamental understanding of different engineering subjects. Websites like Innovative CFD and discussion forum like CFD Online can be a valuable resource to keep one-self abreast of the updates, FAQs, career guidance, job opportunities and events in the domain. The education wing of Centre for Computational Technologies, LearnCAx | CFD Training : Courses, Projects, Career & Knowledge Base, has also come up with the vision to inspire, educate and mentor students to develop skills on commercial CFD software with valuable free and premium courses based on STAR-CCM+ (offering free software licence to students*), ANSYS FLUENT, ANSYS CFX, ANSYS ICEM CFD etc. LearnCAx since 2011, has been serving global CFD education with registrations from 20+ countries from renowned Universities/ Institutes.References:Developing a CFD CareerDiscussion forum CFD Online Discussion ForumsIBIS GROUP CFDhttp://learncax.com/blog/by-category/cfd/career-path-to-cfd-engineer
