Have you ever seen a drill sergeant or drill instructor get roasted by a recruit?

Drill Instructor Staff Sargent Rutledge. MCRD Parris Island, India Company, 3rd Battalion, Platoon 3100, May 1996.We were all set to graduate in a few days. Our Drill Instructors had us up on the quarter deck schooling us on various things we needed to know in the FMF; something not all DIs do. We were asked various things like favorite moments in boot camp. Afterwards we were asked if anyone wanted to get up and roast the DIs. I roasted DI SSGT Rutledge for his cadence call… sort of a droll, monotoned voice, literally just speaking the words “left, right, left”. The two other items I roasted him on was mountain climbers… his favorite IPT of choice called to the same monotoned cadence call and the fact he was one of the fastest human beings to run a three-mile.. I just made fun of him acting like he was smoking recruits, other DIs and even the CMC on a PFT run while doing his cadence. I glanced over at him while he dropped his head forward so his Smokey covered his face. I could tell he was cracking up inside. All four DIs were smirking. SDI actually let out a good few chuckles.I paid dearly for that with… you guessed it… Mountain climbers!!

What was the hardest part of boot camp/basic training for you?

While I was not a poster-looking Marine. Boot Camp for me was quite easy. The only real issue I had while in Boot Camp was that I failed to qualify at the rifle range the first time and when I got my second chance I was one shot away from the highest score on the range that day. I cried inside a little when my Senior DI asked “why didn’t you just do that in the first place Palma?” When you fail to qualify or “Unk” it is an automatic “pizza box” medal for you no matter what you shoot on your second try. That tore me down as I always wanted the Expert cross rifles even before I knew what they were. This was my weakest moment mentally and the one recruit that I flew there with from Miami MEPS talked to me while I was on fire watch and made me feel better about myself. I felt as if I let down my DIs and my platoon as that was the ONLY thing in Boot Camp we didn’t win. I started to feel better when I realized four other platoons went through boot camp with absolutely nothing on there” ‘mote table” (motivational table that held all the plaques, trophies and even some of our DIs medals and ribbons because they were so proud of us) and only one other platoon got to showcase their only win - a win on the rifle range. Platoon 3100, I Co. in March 1996 had everything else. 20 years and I still think about it.A gratifying thing I went through was the gas chamber - I watched the instructor body slam my squad leader (whom nobody liked) who freaked out and tried to run for the door. Needless to say - he was relieved of that duty that moment. And years later dishonorably discharged. A friend told me about the story. The second time I went to the gas chamber years later made me realize my mask; while in boot camp, was ill-fitting and I was breathing in the gas the entire time and didn’t realize it. While I was in the gas chamber I noticed my extra-small new mask fit tight and nicely. When we were instructed to break the seal I breathed in and thought - YES, that is what I was breathing the entire time the last trip to the chamber. I guess I earned that title of squad leader that day in 1996.

Do you know Italy had built the fastest war plane by WW2?

Macchi mc72 idroplane ,Vigna di Valle Italian Air Force Museum.During the thirties the idroplane Macchi-Castoldi mc72 tried to win the Schneider Cup, a competition that UK and Italy contended for years .( three victories in a row were necessary to gain the Cup or three victories in five years).Schneider Cup was a competition for the fastest airplane in the world, both Uk and Italy used idroplanes. Sadly (for us obviously!!) the Brits arrived first and won the cup with Supermarine S6b , with 407,5 mph , the first plane to exceed 400 mph.Supermarine S6 B , father of Spitfire( Brits gained three victories in a row , five in total) and Italy ( that arrived at three total victories, of which two in a row , while USA and France were behind). decided to continue for pride.Italians wanted to win at least the world speed record and completed M.C. 72 , in delay for the Schneider cup of few months. This superlative plane ( actually conserved at Vigna di Valle Air Force Museum) boosted by a Fiat As6 engine of 3100 hp reached 730km/hr during a trial and officially 711,202km/hr ( 442 mph) becoming on October 23 1934 the fastest airplane of the world between 1933to 1939 and remained the fastest pistons engined idroplane ever. His pilot was Francesco AgelloFrancesco Agellowho lost his life as a test pilot during ww2 (during a test flight with a Macchi mc202 , he collided with a similar plane and crashed to his death). The machine was painted in red as all the Italians racers ( cars or motorbikes are red until today, infact Red is the national color of Ferrari,Ducati, Alfa Romeo,Maserati and so on)Aermacchi mc 52Fiat c 29. Ps . One of the Americans pilots of Schneider Cup was the famous Doolittle , the Tokyo bomber, he was the winner of the Baltimore edition on 1925 , his craft was a Curtiss R3C-2.James Doolittle and his Curtiss R3C-2On April 1939 the Me 209 reached 755 km / hr becoming the fastest land plane of that periodMe 209 land racerIn Conclusionas you can see we are not speaking about a war airplane but M.C. 72 was a racer,Aermacchi mc 72 and its enginea real thoroughbred. It was the last of a family of Macchi idroplanes and the father of MC 202 ( 1940 entered in action 1941) and MC205( 1942 entered in action 1943) ,an effective fighter the first , very effective the second .mc202 during ww2 in Northern Africa ( max speed 600 km / hr or 373 mphmc205 ww2 fighter, as we can see it today.( max speed 642/651 km hr or 399/405 mph)I have read the previous answers , I have to say that the question , probably, was about planes before ww2 not during the war, in any case the fastest Italian plane “ during “ the war was Re 2005 with up to 678 km/ hr or 422 mph in 1942, it saw a limited service over Sicilia and Napoli in 1943 , while Fiat g 56 with its 685 km / hr or 426 mph didn’t see operational service during 1944 , both performances could be improved using German gasoline or original german engines and propellers , infact the two planes tested by Germans exceeded 700 km / hr.Much depended from the rating of the engine ( to save the engine it could be reduced to 2600 rpm instead 2800)Re 2005 1943 in action Southern ItalyFiat g 56 Northern Italy 1944 with German insigniaWhat was really inchomprensible was the development of the engine Fiat As6. Why Fiat didn’t prepare a normal and reliable 1000 hp engine for the incoming war? Lack of the best raw materials? Or was impossible to use hig number octanes fuel with the mediocrity of the standard self sufficient materials ( Italy was subjected to an embargo after the Ethiopian campaign) Cheers
