PDF Editor FAQ

Why do not many people like to join community colleges?

Probably because of the inferiority myth!!!Most of what I experienced is that there is an assumption that community colleges are inferior due to their open enrollment/admission policies. Accepting students with the minimum requirement of a high school diploma or GED. The way I see it, making higher level education available for all students is a big plus for community colleges and should not make them any less competitive and inferior to a 4-year college program. As a matter of fact, a lot of programs available in community colleges are accredited by the same organizations that govern entry-level masters degree programs for some professions. Case in point, occupational therapy. OT Assistant programs are available in some community colleges and are accredited by ACOTE or the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education.Another myth is that they hire inferior teachers/educators. Most educators that I have met and worked with are some of the best professionals in the field. Some of them may “just” have Bachelor degrees but are veterans of the field. Clinical skills, expertise, and competence are not developed in the classroom. They are developed in the field through experience. I had a lot of teachable moments in my experience when I purposely put my veteran OT Tech to partner with highly-strung Masters or Doctorate OT new grads and outshine them in clinical practice.Just as with any kind of school or college. Always choose the one that has a good track record and accredited in the field of study that you want to go to.You may be missing out on a great education by not looking into what’s available in a community college near you.God bless.
