My father died when I was 18. I was in nursing school in New Orleans. I had not really wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to be a librarian. But you could be a nurse or a teacher in 1970 south Louisiana. My mother wanted to be a nurse. So I went to nursing school. When I got back from the funeral I ceased going to class. Not deliberatly but as if I could not stand to listen to anything. The day that the patient I was bathing died during her bath I lost it. I left class and the hospital. My teacher just said call the morgue. She did not offer any support of any kind. I was fragile after loosing my dad.So I disappeared from class and walked the 3 blocks to the New Orleans public library. I laid down in one of the aisles and read and cried silent tears. The library was my place of refuge. In my world if I could get to a library I felt safe.I went to the library every morning and stayed till they closed at night. I flunked out of nursing school and became a librarian. The smell of book dust is magic to me. My fathers death allowed me to become my authentic self. For 17 years he had told me what to do and I had grudgingly done it. I had never been able to overcome duty. My father was a good man but the boss. My life changed dramatically when he died. It took me years to adjust.

Not terribly.In general terms, the location of major areas in the game is approximately correct. However, Fallout’s Boston is far smaller and simpler, with major areas way too close together compared to real Boston.That said, some individual locations are quite accurate. When I was in Boston with my crush, we went into the catacombs beneath Old North Church, and I was able to get around because I’ve spent so much time there in the game. We also went to the Boston public library, where I stood on the grand staircase and said “I’ve been killed by supermutants right here!”Parts of Fallout’s Boston aren’t really Boston at all. There’s an abandoned, flooded power plant in Fallout 4 that’s loosely based on an abandoned, flooded power plant in New Orleans, which I’ve also visited with my crush.

My best tip is to try to learn the material well before you have to know it in class.Classes move at a fixed pace. This tends to be ok most places since the pace is reasonable. MIT, on the other hand, intentionally keeps the pace much faster as a kind of challenge. That is why it is not unusual to see 1600 SATs or valedictorians fail classes there.I was able to get my first exposure to rigorous classes like multivariable calculus, differential equations, partial differential equations, linear algebra, and programming as part of a joint program between my high school and the University of New Orleans. Then when I saw the same topics (at a more rigorous level) at MIT, it was much more digestible.Another tip is to really question whether lecture is the best use of your time. If you have the discipline to go to the library and study intently for that hour (or work on a problem set), you’ll probably find it is a better use of your time than falling asleep in a 300-person lecture.
