PDF Editor FAQ

What did someone do or say at the bank that made you say, “You gotta be kidding me!”?

I started my own business in early 1997. I opened a business checking and savings account with a large savings bank in the NYC area. About two years after starting my company, I decided to purchase my own customer deposit slips that I could use in conjunction with Quickbooks. I called the bank's customer service line and asked if I could have my own checking and savings deposit slips made by a company of my choice. They assured me that it would be fine and that it is done all of the time. So, I had checking and savings deposit slips designed and processed, and shipped to me. I used them for about a year with no issues at a few of my local branches. Then one day, I was in an area not far from where I lived and had a deposit to make. I saw a branch of my bank in Flushing, NY so I went in to make a deposit. I gave the teller my checks to be deposited and my savings deposit slip. The teller just stood there looking at my deposit slip for a long time in a bewildered manner. After about 5 minutes, I became concerned and asked her, “Is there anything wrong”? She replied “No” and went on looking at the deposit slip. I then told her that the deposit slip is for a business saving account. She said, “no it’s not”. Now I was bewildered, thinking maybe there was something actually wrong with the deposit slip or maybe one of my checks. After about 12 minutes, she asked for the assistance of the head teller. They both stood there whispering to each other trying to figure out the deposit slip. I asked both of them “What is the delay ladies”? They both told me “nothing”. So I continued to wait. I noticed that they never attempted to process the deposit nor asked me any questions. After about 30 minutes, the assistant manager (who was observing from her desk) got up and came to the teller's window to see what was going on. The assistant manager took a look at the transaction and said to both of them “How long has this customer been waiting”? They replied, “Um, I don’t know”. The assistant manager informed them that I had been there for 30 minutes and that there has not been any attempt to process my deposit. They told her that they could not figure out the deposit slip. The head teller and the teller had never seen a personalized saving deposit slip before. They had only seen them for checking. The deposit slips they had seen for saving were the bank-issued ones that are on display that you fill out when you walk into the bank. Hearing this, I said, “Is this a joke”? The assistant manager was very upset with them. She appeared embarrassed. She could not understand how they could not decipher a simple deposit slip since it looks no different than the checking deposit slips. The first three numbers of the account number on the slip differentiate if the account is checking or savings. All they had to do is type in the account number and process the transaction. The assistant manager informed them that this is not rocket science and that she might have to recommend that they get retrained. She apologized to me for having to wait 45 minutes in total for something that was easy to figure out. I let her know that I in fact informed the teller that it was a savings deposit slip and she told me it was not. The assistant manager informed the teller that they will discuss this later and asked me if there was anything else that she could do for me. I replied that there wasn’t and that I appreciated her stepping in.

Have you ever confronted a thief?

In my earlier banking career, one of my tellers pointed out an older man in the lobby, telling me they knew he had “sticky fingers.” I tried keeping an eye open on him as he stood at one of our deposit slip counters — then he turned and walked out the door without even going to a teller. There wasn’t much for him to take; maybe a stack of deposit slips? The pen was securely attached….Then I noticed: the little calendar there no longer displayed today’s date. A small box with a flip-up top which contained 16 embossed tiles which we would flip to the correct date each morning. He’d taken one of them.I ran out into the parking lot after him, thinking if I accused him he’d probably just deny it, then what would I do? I was mildly amused that someone would want to steal such a thing — but annoyed thinking how difficult it would be to replace a single embossed tile to match the others.I called out, “Sir!” and caught up with him. “Did you happen to pick up a little calendar tile that was on our counter?”His expression turned to one as though deep in thought for a moment, then he brightened and declared, “Why yes, I did!” He reached into his pocket and handed it to me, even looking a little proud that he was able to be of some help.

If I hide my car, report it as stolen, then commit a crime in the car, would the police suspect me of committing the crime?

Yes, they would suspect you.Ever hear those stupid criminal stories? You know, the ones like the guy who robs the bank and the teller asks for ID or the robber used the back of his deposit slip for the note? You’re on the path to being one of those stories.
