Down here in Arkansas, we had a gent named Vic Snyder serve as our US Representative for the Second Congressional District—the one where I live, and where Little Rock is located—from 1997 to 2011. He’d served in Vietnam as a Marine, then gotten his medical degree and practiced family medicine for fifteen years. I’ve never met him personally, but from everything I’ve heard, he’s a good man and a dedicated public servant. I never had any complaints about anything he did while in office.Anyway, he voted for the Affordable Care Act in 2009. And then this happened—as described in an e-mail that was widely copied and forwarded at the time. I quote it from A quiet dinner out :Tonight was something straight out of the movies! Nine of my girlfriends were out in Little Rock for a couple of birthday celebrations at our favorite restaurant, Graffiti's. We had been there about one hour when Vic Snyder walked in with his wife Betsy and of course looked around the room as if everyone loved him. My friend Morie said, give him a chance to sit down and order a drink and I am going to tell him what I think about his "yes" vote on Saturday night for the Health Care amendment. I said "don't go without me!" All of a sudden Morie rose and walked off and I jumped up and followed her. Morie went up to him and shook his hand and said how disappointed she was in his vote, Vic just smiled and said "thank you for your opinion". I shook his hand and told him my name and that I was married to Glenn Davis, a physician and that we were going to do all we could to see that he was not re-elected. His wife Betsy sat there with her mouth open. Betsy and I have known each other for several years and have served on the Arkansas Hospice Board together. After we sat down three of our friends got up about 15 minutes later to tell him what they thought and he said " my wife is in tears because of the other two women who were so rude and we do not want to hear anymore. My girlfriend, Linda, whose son is a Marine pilot said " they were not rude, they just wanted you to know that you were wrong in voting yes". Vic and Betsy got up to leave but she stopped at our table to tell us how disappointed she was that we chose to interrupt their dinner and that we should call his office. I looked her in the eye and said " Vic works for me and I can say whatever, whenever I want and he should be ashamed to vote yes for this bill. I said we would like to have the same health care plan they and their four kids have, one boy and a set of triplets(under a year old), at their age, who is paying for that? Betsy ran off and Vic paid the bill. Everyone at the table said to him, hope you enjoyed the dinner we just paid for. It was so great! Vic had no response and I cannot tell you how many people came to our table and thanked us for what we did. Keep after these people, they are so out of touch with America ! JanetI think the precedent’s already been set for harassing government officials when they’re trying to enjoy a quiet dinner. There’s an old proverb about a goose and a gander that comes to mind here. . . gosh, I’ll think of it in a minute. . .I would have to agree with “Janet” that we need to “keep after these people, they are so out of touch with America.”I would also agree with “Janet” that Mitch McConnell works for his constituents and they can say whatever, whenever they want. If he doesn’t like it, he needs to find a safe space where his special snowflakey self won’t melt.As we simple, honest, uncultured, rustic Arkansas folk always say, from Bald Knob to Weiner, from Possum Grape to Smackover, and from Toad Suck to Pickles Gap: Idem Accio quod Titio ius esto.

“Australia" didn't officially exist as a nation until 1st January 1901 when the six former colonies formed a federation or commonwealth of Australia, the offical head of state at that time was good queen Vic of the British Empire. Australia was a nation but it wasn't a fully independent nation. So Queen Victoria would be considered Australia's first ruler although Edmund Barton was Australia's first prime minister and the new governor-general was Lord Hopetoun. Obviously trying to rule a new nation like Australia was very stressful. Good queen Vic died within a few weeks of federation, Lord Hopetoun returned to Britain within a couple years and died before he was fifty, and E. Barton also resigned from parliament within a couple years to become a high court judge. This was not that uncommon in Australian politics, although it is usually expected that more time would have been spent in federal parliament and a high court appointment seen as a consolation for not quite getting the PM gig during his career. Barton was however very much involved in NSW politics before Federation. He was even appointed NSW premier before becoming prime minister.
