If anyone is in doubt about how well-prepared and organised the EU is, perhaps you should know that France and the Netherlands have trained over 6,000 new customs officers since 2017 (program started 2 years ago) and Calais now has a new €26 million facility for processing horses from the UK. By comparison, the UK has somehow wasted over £4 billion trying to implement the M20 and some airfields as lorry parks, not to mention losing £100 million due to non-existent ferry companies. The UK still doesn't know the tariffs to apply after No Deal whereas the EU is crystal clear about MFN rates. Around 90% by value of UK exports to the EU will be hit by EU MFN tariffs.And so on.So if I was negotiating with the EU, it would be very clear quite quickly that No Deal is No Threat to the EU. If the UK wishes to commit suicide, then the EU can shrug and say truthfully, hand on heart, they did their best. Because there's no way to stop an addict from killing himself unless one incarcerates him but then that would be wholly undemocratic.So I totally believe that Mrs May would never have dared mention No Deal as a strategy because it will only weaken significantly the UK's negotiating position. Apparently it was because he didn't want to “give away” his “strategy” and then implied that Mr Barnier couldn't have possibly read the 300-odd pages on his side of the table and therefore the stacks of EU papers were just for “show”.English isn't my first language and I can read over a thousand pages of English-based financial documents a day (less than 10% of such documentation is relevant anyway). So I suspect Mr Barnier could have easily perused a few hundred pages in preparation for an important meeting. It's also worrying that Mr Davis thinks a few hundred pages is too much to read, which implies he doesn't read many books. It also suggests he would be incapable of doing detailed preparatory work.In any case, the lack of even a notepad in front of Mr Davis can only mean he wasn't interested in taking notes at this important meeting either. He wasn't there to negotiate or even listen at all.So if Mrs May brought out the No Deal banana after Mr Davis, it would only confirm how even more ridiculous she and the UK would look, and one supposes that she knew it as well.

On the last day of my two week notice my boss came into the building and called me into a conference room. He normally worked a couple hours away at our US Headquarters, so I imagine he came down just to give me the exit interview. After the exit interview, he shook my hand, thanked me for the time I put in, and said I could go home. On the way back to my desk I stopped by a couple of colleagues offices to say goodbye, then collected my things and left.
