There is only one advantage: you get what you want, pretty much the way you want it. That, in and of itself, might be the most important thing to you. It is YOURS and not like anyone else’s guitar. that appeals to me.Depending on your specific choices and selections and ability to do precision work on hardware that is apt to cause headaches (*I* would certainly never want to deal with a fussy Floyd Rose system. Nope. No way. Not since I can get fine results from my Bigsby, original Strat Trem, and a 1980s Ibanez-esque vibrato unit—each on different guitars of course…Oops! I forgot that the Strat Trem guitar is gone now. Sorry.), you may even get an instrument that plays better than a factory Strat, or even a Fender Custom Shop Strat. Maybe to even probably.If you like fiddling with the thing and aren’t the kind of person worried about warranties or violating them, then putting your own guitar together and hacking it, constantly trying new things, or upgrading it may be just the ticket.I don’t mess “much” with my ‘70 Les Paul (although last night I ran out of customer guitars in the shop and built a new pair of pickups for it that I think will sound better than the stock T-tops it came with), but I DO mess with my Telecaster that I build in the early 80s. It’s partially disassembled at this very moment. I built a P90 pickup to stick in the neck position. I want some “growl.” I need to decide whether to be patient and build a template for routing it for the P90 (and do the job right) or just carefully get in there and rout it by eye. If I remain as impatient as I feel right now—with all this ”shelter in place” going on—I may have installed the P90 and given it a new wiring job (series/parallel option) by tonight or tomorrow. I’d never do that on a stock factory model.I made the walnut pickguard some time ago and re-routed it for the P90 with a dremel last night. I need a bigger router & heavier bit to work on the ash body…so that’s why I am hesitating. One slip and…The point is, if you LIKE messing with the very guts of the instruments (I do), then building from parts is a satisfying way to play with ideas, using the guitar as an experimental platform.….But, nothing else about the endeavor is an ”advantage.” You save little to no money (though you *might* get a little better guitar for the money that you do spend) and your re-sale value will be almost non-existent. You may put in $1200-$1500 of nicely spec’d parts only to find that no one will take it in trade or buy it for more than the cost of a Squier Strat (less than $200)—even if it pristine, has diamond-studded tuning gears, and plays itself! Virtually everyone I know who has built a Strat from parts And eventually wanted to sell it (for whatever reason) has done better disassembling the guitar and selling it piecemeal.If re-sale value matters to you, then an American made Strat holds value much better than any “partscaster” guitar you can build—unless you are Eddie VanHalen.
