PDF Editor FAQ
Is the BNY Mellon analyst position prestigious as your first job?
Well, think of it this way. I work at BNY Mellon now, and for my first job I was a dishwasher at a nursing home in Plainfield, NJ. For my first job after college, I worked as a server at a Pizzeria Uno’s in Allston, MA. Life will take you to all sorts of unexpected places, if you're lucky enough to survive whatever it throws at you. Keep your head up, be who you are, learn something from every experience, and make what you can of the opportunities you get. What you can do matters a lot more than who pays you to do it, so don't worry too much about the prestige of your employer at the start. As you build your skills and rack up accomplishments, you'll accumulate your own.
Why are the poor the least likely to have healthcare insurance but need it the most?
If you are a low income person or family in the USA you have several related problems. You may work long hours, or uncertain hours (the gig economy). If your schedule is irregular your sleep will be too. You will always be tired and stressed. You may well have problems eating well: fast food and supermarket snacks are cheap and convenient, but not good for you. They may also be all you can buy before or after work, or where you live. You may live in a poor area, so there won’t be many shops selling nutrition rather than cheap and convenient. All these factors increase the chances of getting sick and needing medical help. The first - lack of certain employment on a long term basis means, in the US, that your employer is not likely to pay for health insurance. He really doesn’t have any investment in you to make him want to retain you, he probably doesn’t offer much time off for sickness or anything else, so you have little job security. You are disposable.(There are exceptions of course. There are people whose poverty is temporary- such as graduate students and people just beginning their careers. They may still be covered by their families. There are also some employers who insure all their employees: I remember seeing a very long line of men and women standing outside an Aldi store in Plainfield NJ. They were adverting jobs paying $12/hour with insurance. This was about 7 years ago. They are a German company and treat employees as valuable assets once you learn your job.So that’s why you need insurance more, and also why you are the least likely to have it. As far as the people who make the decisions are concerned, you don’t matter much.It can be quite different elsewhere in the world.
What happened to Rhea Sen (Columbia imposter)?
Birva Patel, now more famous as the “Colombia Impostor” used an alias, “Rhea Sen” while she was squatting at Columbia. (Rhea Sen - happens to be the name of an Indian actor). Her real name is Birva Patel.Although she seems to have been the issue, as a person who has seen her in close quarters and interacted with, I feel that Birva was more a victim of circumstances (that she did not know how to deal with) rather than a person with bad intentions. She had extremely poor social skills and a terrible, unpredictable temper. I feel that her parents are responsible for her lack of social skills, and in many ways for her plight back then.[A] Before Columbia: (Fall/Summer 2011)I knew her for a while as a colleague. I first met this girl in May-2011 when I was interning at a start up, based in South Plainfield NJ. We were in a 6 - month probationary period after which the company would decide whether to employ us or to let us go. I had just moved into NJ from Upstate NY where I had completed schooling. We were a team of 6 interns, managed by a supervisor who was a fulltime employee of the company.Birva seemed like a normal quiet girl at first and since I was sitting next to her at work, I struck up a conversation with her and learned that she graduated from NJIT with a degree in biochemistry. She was friendly at first, in fact she sounded delighted that we were both staying at the same hotel (our company rented out rooms at a hotel for us to stay in, by the month for the six months that we were going to intern there). She would ask one of the other interns for a ride back to our hotel, but things eventually soured between her and the ride - she would send him weird texts and verbally abuse him for absolutely no reason. To give you an example - we were about to leave to work at the scheduled 8:30 am one morning and my colleague(the guy that drove us to work) called and later texted her asking her if she needed a ride. Since there was no response, we left and went to the office. To our surprise she was already there - but she angrily told the guy to stop texting her and calling her !! We were confused at first, but this pattern was repeated with other employees at work as well. She would approach a person, talk to them, then respond angrily if the person spoke to her in a friendly manner the next day. This was her pattern. She had a sister and a brother-in-law who Birva claimed was a medical doctor. The couple lived in New Jersey at the time and were supposedly both US Citizens. Birva herself wasn’t a US citizen. Birva once tried to convince one of our colleagues to call Birva’s sister and lie that Birva owed the caller some money and that the caller would have Birva arrested if the sister didn’t pay him the money owed on Birva’s behalf. The colleague declined for obvious reasons, but told us about Birva’s little plan to extort money from her sister. Having seen her in the common area of the Hotel we stayed in, angry and cursing (talking to herself), yelling at room service, and angry all the time for no obvious reason, we had reasons to believe that Birva was either doing drugs or just mentally unstable. There were quite a few incidents involving her that I witnessed first hand. There were a few other shocking things that I heard from a couple at work that had gone to school with her at NJIT although in a different program. So I won’t endorse these 3 bullet points below since I did not witness these things myself, and only heard from other people who knew Birva Patel. The things I heard included but weren’t limited to:She was an alleged drug user (Heroin)She was alleged to have been sexually assaulted (possibly raped) by a group of boys at NJIT and this included her then boyfriend, an undergrad student at her schoolDuring her last year at NJIT her source of income was said to be escort services that she provided (she apparently used this money to fuel her heroin addiction)Although some of these allegations seemed to explain why her behavior was all over the place, there was no definitive proof of any of this being remotely true - just hear say and allegations from people who went to NJIT with Birva. She was likely a victim of abuse and not crazy by choice. It was quite clear that this person was mentally unstable and unfit for a corporate job. Since all of us had complained to out supervisor about Birva’s constant persistent behavioral issues that none of us could deal with - she was eventually fired`from our company (in late June 2011).[B] The Columbia trespass incident(s): 2012My coworkers would occasionally joke about Birva Patel and our experiences with her, but none of us had heard anything about her for over a year. Then the article on Colombia Spectator appeared with her name on it. I instantly recognized her from the photos as the same person. Reading the article(s) and the accounts of people who had to deal with her, I figured her patterns and awkward interactions hadn’t changed at all. After reading this article, given that she was an Indian National, I assumed she would have been eventually deported (or left the country on her own will - a voluntary departure) at the end of her F1 student Visa. Here’s a few notable articles about her that appeared on Columbia Spectator, New York Post and other:This Story Of The Girl Arrested For Posing As A Columbia Freshman Just Keeps Getting StrangerImpostor posed as Columbia student for at least 9 monthsThird arrest for ‘fake Columbia student’Birva being escorted out of the Columbia University campus (after being arrested) by an NYPD cop.[C] After Columbia: (2013 arrest and release in Smyrna GA)The only time Birva Patel came back to the limelight after the Columbia incident was in a mugshot, from the Smyrna GA prison. Patel, Birva Bharatbhai was booked in Cobb County, GA on 5/14/2013 at 14:15 for Simple Battery. The link here details some of the battery charges brought against her. The charges were dropped later and Birva was released.Below: The Mugshot from Smyrna Jail (from mugshots.com)[D] Current: Absolutely nothing was known about Birva Patel since the Georgia arrest of 2013 until recently. It is possible that she (either) stayed back in the US keeping a low profile/ under an alias, working odd jobs/escort (or) was deported/moved back to India. In early 2018, I got reliable information about Birva’s current status: She is working in a BPO/call center in Ahmedabad, Gujarat (her home state in India). She has a stable job and lives a quiet life, and has no behavioral issues. So the story does seem to have a happy ending after all.
