No way to become a top pro…Ron Lyle comes closest…Ex-Con Ron Lyle came to professional boxing late, after he turned 30 years, 8 1/2 months old. But he actually started boxing at 27 in prison, and then after release, boxed 14 months as an amateur, going 25–4. Then, at nearly 31, he turned pro.The 3rd of 19 children, Lyle grew up to a dirt poor family.Another child of poverty, Lyle was convicted of second degree murder in 1961 in Colorado, where he served almost 8 years. He took up boxing in prison, saying:“they had fight cards in prison. I sat around watching them for a while and finally said to myself, 'I can do that.”Lyle, stabbed in prison by another inmate, almost died on the operating table. He required 36 blood transfusions, but the tough as nails Lyle somehow survived.In his first fight on the prison boxing team, Lyle supposed was defeated by another convict, “Texas” Johnson. Lyle never lost another prison boxing match.Colorado State Penitentiary Warden Wayne K. Patterson, is reported to have said Lyle was a "natural born athlete." During the remainder of his sentence, he had around twenty-five un-recorded amateur fights, losing only one.Lyle’s prison story has considerable resemblance to Sonny Liston. Just as a white priest and prison athletic director, Father Stevens, in the Missouri State Penitentiary, had gotten Sonny interested in boxing, and turned his life around, in Colorado State Penitentiary, a white correctional officer and prison athletic director, Lieutenant Cliff Mattax, got Lyle interested in boxing, and changed his life.Lyle would later be quoted in Sports Illustrated as saying:“It was the turning point of my life. Mattax was white, and he wore a badge, but he really cared. He believed in me and my ability. Right then I decided to be a success.”In 1969 Lyle was eligible for parole, but was turned down twice for lack of a parole plan. Lyle had listed a professional boxing career as his parole plan. But Bill Daniels, a cable television executive, president and owner of the Denver Rocks boxing team and the American Basketball Association Utah Stars basketball team, offered Lyle an official job as a welder, while under the table paying him to box.Lyle was released on Sunday, November 9, 1969, at the age of 29, and in 1970, at the age of 30, Lyle started a professional boxing career.Though he never won the title, Lyle was a perennial contender who fought Ali for the title and gave him a fierce battle.Ron entered the ranks at #4 in 1972, he was #5 in 1973, #3 in 1974, #5 in 1975 and 1976, #4 in 1977 and 1978. That was the last year he was ranked, but he was ranked in the top 10 for seven consecutive years, though he never rose past #3.Lyle had notable fights with Buster Mathis Jr., Jerry Quarry, George Foreman, Ali, and Earnie Shavers among the greats of the age.He was known as a pure slugger, who would stand toe to toe with anyone, but Lyle proved against Muhammad Ali he could box as well, outboxing the Greatest for 10 rounds before Ali knocked him out.Ron is ranked #69 of all heavyweights of all time by Boxrec.Big George Foreman, who fought Hall of Famers Holyfield, Frazier, Ali, and Norton, said of Lyle:“Ron Lyle was the strongest man I ever faced in any fight… This guy hit me so hard that it didn’t even hurt. Joe Frazier caught me with the left hook but he couldn’t hit like Lyle and although Muhammad knocked me down I was exhausted and still got to my feet. Lyle was the hardest hitter. The thing about Lyle was he was complete unafraid and challenged me at ring center. Nobody, other than Sonny Liston in sparring, stood and punched it out with me with any success. Joe Frazier only tried once and even the great Muhammad Ali couldn’t back up quick enough.
