There are lots of options. Architects can design all sorts of things. Buildings are very, very complicated. Most things by comparison are a lot simpler, so many of us like to play around designing other stuff. These represent commercial opportunities for those who are naturally entrepreneurial.Software developmentArchitecture is such a complex and involved job, that we are completely dependent on software tools to do things efficiently.A lot of this has not been designed by people who do the job, and there are often lots of shortcomings and inefficiencies.There are also lots of gaps in the market. Online databases are going to be even more important in the future, relying on cloud storage to automate and manage more and more things.Room data sheets, environmental assessment tracking, O&M manuals, workload and programme tracking are all available, but not widespread, not available everywhere, and often incomplete or clunky.There are other things like render engine plugins and 3D BIM objects that present opportunities. Sure, there are sites like BIMObject, but have you seen a lot of the stuff they offer? I have downloaded taps that are simply geometry converted from Solidworks files with more polygons than some entire BIM models! How many BIM files have you seen which are simply dumb geometry, where every slight parametric variation is simply another high-poly standalone file that doesn’t have effective 2D views? A lot of people who build this stuff have no idea what they are doing.Imagine a tool which ran in a Browser window which allowed you to build parametric objects, and then saved these to formats which would work in the most popular BIM applications. Remember, Revit does not equal BIM!Imagine a cloud-based Room Data sheet application which allowed end users to log on and complete their data online, which was linked to your BIM model, and allowed comments and markup.Imagine an application which built your Building User Guide based on templates and a distillation of your O&M and Health and Safety data, and then created QR codes you could print out as little stickers to apply to building elements.I got involved with a render plugin several years ago, and it has been really successful. I designed the workflow, the UI, scripted the render presets, designed the libraries, built some of the content, and did a lot of tutorial and promotional material. It has worked out very well!Understanding what is possible with technology and being able to not only articulate what is required, but design an effective workflow and get it implemented allows architects to influence the tools they work with.Product designThere are also numerous little things that we think of periodically that are marketable products. I’m constantly looking at the world and thinking how to make it better and designing things.I want a low solid wood coffee table on wheels with a drawer with an inbuilt mains charger that I can use to put all my technology in. I want to plug cables in to charge the various devices I have sitting on it. How many of us have phones and ipads around the house, or sat on a coffee table charging? I couldn’t find anything commercially, so I have designed a nice one, but it’s solid oak and won’t be cheap to build. I’m not in the least bit an entrepreneur. I would give the drawings away if someone would build one for me!I want a thing which crushes cans that I can hang on my wall near the recycling, that doesn’t look horrible. I can’t find anything commercially so I’m working on it.I want a nice folding step for my kitchen for my wife. She’s small and needs steps to get to the back of the top cupboards. I want one which is elegantly designed which again folds flat and will look good in the kitchen and hung on the wall. Again I can’t find anything suitable commercially, so I’ll make one. I’m working on that too.I don’t have a workbench for DIY, so I put an old door on a small garden table. It kind of works, but it’s not a great solution. I designed a simple metal frame with triangular legs that would fold flat that I could store easily outdoors. I might get that fabricated.I designed a sun lounger I built out of old timber pallets, but I sanded everything smooth so the wood looks consistent and ‘new’. I’m going to dye it black and oil it next summer.Every time you look at anything and think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if I had something which…” I guess you have an opportunity to design and even make something, and that something could make money.Art and graphic designArchitects often design graphics for buildings, and often have great artistic or graphic design skills. We also tend to be pretty up to date in relation to contemporary cultural issues. I’m betting that many of us could design some fantastic topical T-shirts for example. Posters, wall art and clothing are all things architects have produced commercially in the past. Have you seen GFDA?Like many people I was quite deeply affected by the BLM protests. I lived in South Africa during apartheid and even as a child who didn’t know the words racism or apartheid, I totally understood the total lack of fairness I saw, but was looked after by some fantastic black women. Racism saddens and frustrates me deeply and I want to do better and show my commitment. I designed a neat little silver badge that could be 3d printed that I could pin on my coat. Nothing flashy or obtrusive, it was just a small, elegant and subtle everyday reminder to myself and the world that I (we) need to do better. I’ll get it printed next year.People have made decent money doing far less.Take a look at Etsy and tell me you can’t do better than a lot of what you see.
