But did you know that the Mon Calmari’s main cruisers were actually skyscrapers from their home world?See, the Mon Calmari and their northern cousins, the Quarren, were famous for their shipbuilding skills. The Mon Cala Shipyards were well-known and respected throughout the entire galaxy for fast, maneuverable freighters and transports.In fact, they were so famous that after the Clone Wars and the rise of Darth Vader, the Emperor asked the Mon Calmari and the Quarren to build spaceships for the fledgling Empire’s fleet.When they refused, the Emperor (in a fit of rage - heh heh) ordered a grand scale invasion of Mon Cala.Unbeknownst to him, however, the Quarren and Mon Calmari had been prepared for a hasty escape into space for several hundred years. In fact, most of Mon Cala’s skyscrapers were actually built to be used as escape pods, if necessary. So when the Empire invaded, the Mon Calmari and the Quarren simply loaded up into the skyscrapers, blasted off, and left the Empire completely dumbfounded.Since the Mon Calmari and the Quarren were traditionally peaceful species, they had to retrofit the skyscrapers-turned-spaceships with armor, turbolasers and spaceship docking bays. This meant that they would have gigantic issues in trying to defend themselves against the Empire.So, they turned to the Rebel Alliance.The Mon Calmari and the Quarren were willing to let the Rebel Alliance use their skyscrapers-turned-spaceships as the nucleus of the Rebel Fleet, if the Rebels would train them in combat and help retrofit their ships. There are two answers, the one in Canon and the one in Legends.In canon, some of the Mon Calamari cruisers were cities. When the Empire tried to take over Mon Calamari, these cities fired up their engines and left the watery world of Mon Calamari behind. Other ships were simply Mon Calamari warships created for combat during the Clone Wars.In Legends, the Mon Calamari used passenger liners that they converted into warships. I like this explanation much better because it fits the Mon Calamari very well. See, the Mon Calamari are very refined. They make great sushi, they love the opera, it seems just like them to make classy passenger liners and then convert them into warships.So, that is the origin of the Mon Calamari star cruisers.Stay safe,-Ben

Hi Robet,I like questions about Mars. This is a good one because it helps us step away from the terrestrial sense of things. Many mountains are in ranges. The Rockies, the Andes, the Urals, and the Himalayas are good examples. This has something to do with how the Earths crust moves. Geologists call the creation of a mountain an orogeny. Orogenics is an interesting process, but some of what we know about it does not translate to the Red Planet. Why? Because Mars has limited plate tectonics. There are crust deformities, faults and Mars-quakes, but as I was taught, it’s to a much smaller, regional extent than that on Earth.Still, Olympus Mons exists. It is the largest mountain in the solar system, or more accurately, the largest volcano. It is a shield-type volcano of vast extent, having a footprint similar to that of Spain (and remember, Mars is a much smaller globe so Spain would make for a relatively large geographic feature on it. This giant volcano sits on the western boundary of a region known as the Tharsis Bulge. It is a volcanic plateau and home to several shield volcanoes including Olympus Mons’ three smaller neighbors, Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Ascraeus Mons, each of which are taller than Everest. Olympus Mons reaches above most of the Martian atmosphere. It is roughly three times taller than Earth’s largest mountain, Mt. Everest (29,029 feet) at 25 km or about 84000 feet. There is no real mountain range associated with it.As an interesting aside, the previously-mentioned Pavonis Mons conveniently straddles the Martian equator and reaches far above most of the planet’s atmosphere, so it has been a favorite feature upon which to build a space elevator in Sci-Fi literature.Thanks for posting your out-of-this-world question on Quora.
