Reminds me of Donald Trump’s iPhone I guess…(Think it through people, there’s a joke trapped in that sentence, desperately trying to get out.)But these numbers are more than that. They represent jobs, they represent income and prosperity. These numbers affect people’s lives in real ways.Now, the more obtuse among you might say.“How is banning 23% of the world’s population going to affect tourism?”Well, I’m glad you asked, even though, technically you did not but, as I work from home… I’m glad we had this chat.All things being equal, banning a quarter of the world’s population from entering your country would result in a drop in tourist receipts of around a quarter. I’m not privy to the actual data surrounding the number of travelers to and from specific regions but I expect that it is skewed towards close neighbors; Canadians, Mexicans and so on. Still, I think it likely that his ban would cost around 20% of the receipts.So, you just flushed $55 billion a year down the drain in order to pander to the petty fears of the masses.Kudos!Of course, it could be much worse than that. Some people might refuse to come to the U.S. in solidarity with their fellow human beings (who have every right to practice whatever religion they choose.) Others might not want to visit what would in effect be a quasi-fascist state. I’m thinking of the Canadians here; they are so sensitive and lovely.It’s not just tourist dollars either. Around 5 percent of students in American Universities came from overseas. The largest growth in international student numbers in recent years has come from China and India.There are 180 million Muslims in India and over 20 million in China.Islamophobia has already seen a reduction in students from Saudi Arabia drop by around 16.8 percent since 2013 and Trump would love to see that figure rise to 100 percent. Estimates, are tricky, and I’m not an economist, though I do live with a finance professor, which helps. It seems to us both, that the Muslim ban, having looked at just two of the fiscal implications (and I promise you there are more,) would cost a ridiculous amount of money.Now, this is the U.S. congress we’re talking about, so the legislation would be given a friendly name, something like the ‘Make America’s Children Safe from Invading Space Turtles’ Bill. Something hard for simple minds to object to whilst at the same time forcing free thinking people to have to defend their ‘Pro-Space Turtle’ stance to Bill O’Reilly on live television.Bill: “They are coming for your kids, your money, what are you going to do? Are you going to give them a hug? Give me a break!”The American political system is, to use a technical term, ‘corrupt to high fucksy.’ However, such corruption sometimes works on the side of the angels, albeit inadvertently. All those nice little senators and congressmen regardless of who is running what, will get a few visits around about the time the Anti- Muslim bill is due for debate. The aviation industry, the hotel industry, the tourism industry, lobbyists from those who manufacture aviation fuel, industries reliant on immigrant labour, industries reliant on immigrant spending, education lobbyists and so on and so forth. They’ll all show up with campaign donations tucked into their speedos and complimentary tickets to the Vienna Opera spilling out of their pockets.They will have only have one request and by request I mean demand because collectively, these people own Congress in much the same way I own a rhesus monkey called Simon. ( He does my laundry.)“Could you not ban a fifth of the world’s population guys? We’re trying to make money for fuck’s sake!” They would say.And that, would be that. The Bill would fail and six months later, our children would be snatched from their cribs by flying space turtles and mashed to bits by oh-so-bony beaks.And Trump will say.“I told you folks, I called it. I was the only one worried about the Astro Turtles”3. Is it practical?No it’s not.There that one was easy.Effectively there is no ‘Muslim’ club. It’s true that certain countries have overwhelmingly Muslim populations, so you might be able to instigate a blanket ban on, let’s say anyone from Saudi Arabia; but that’s not a Muslim ban, it’s a Saudi ban. What about British Muslims and French Muslims? There are of course, certain types of dress, certain ethnicity that lend themselves to profiling, but such measures are far from foolproof. Any Muslim committed to entering the U.S. could probably do so by simply denying their own religion. Sort of an “I’m not a Muslim I’m a very naughty boy’ thing. For the faithful, such an act does indeed represent a barrier, but for the tiny, tiny minority of Muslims intent on doing harm, I think it’s one they could internally justify.Where does that leave us?Well, it suggests that for several reasons, cornerstone policies that Trump has espoused will never happen. His wall might be built I suppose, though I doubt it would be finished by the time his term was up. I know it would not be effective.And I know that the world would not care. Racism exists wherever you look, and Americans of every background are subjected to it. There are some nasty, unkind and inaccurate stereotypes about Americans and Trump’s actions would only serve to reinforce them. Even if Trump did somehow ban all Muslims, most would shrug and say“Yeah, Americans are idiots.”That’s how most felt about the British after the Brexit vote.Of more concern are his foreign policy ideas and I use the word ‘ideas’ here, quite incorrectly. I like to think of them as foreign policy farts, gaseous snafu’s that anyone with half a brain would blame on the dog. Here, Trump really could do some damage. His ideas are both stupid and dangerous; they might well lead us into a catastrophic war.
