Keep working backward to a smaller and smaller area. Eventually I find the exact point(s) where it started, then the ash remains of a match or other ignition source. If I see or smell anything that just doesn’t seem to fit I took a sample (slag from a highway flare or a gasoline smell 20 feet from the edge of the road is suspicious). Everything was bagged and tagged as criminal evidence just like you see on CSI shows on TV, even it I suspected it was accidental.Then the real work begins. All these point backwards to the origin. Eventually you will get back to the specific point where it started. If you smell anything of the ordinary (i.e. gasoline, diesel, highway flare), you take soil samples and any physical objects out of place. A large powerful magnet carefully hovered over the area of origin will find any small metal fragments. Everything is bagged and tagged like the CSI shows on TV. Photos of everything and the entire scene.Then the fun begins. The weather data is given to a certified FBAN (Fire Behavior Analyst — an experienced firefighter with additional specialized training in chemistry, physics, mathematical modelling, etc) to re-create the early stages of the fire, second by second, inch by inch, verifying the point I found on the ground matches the computer spread models. This also will be needed if we go to court. Any testimony regarding computer simulation will need to come a court recognized expert in fire behavior. I had quite a bit of the same training, but never got my official FBAN ticket punched. Law Enforcement Officers will interview witnesses and do the personal information gathering of [persons of interest — bank and phone records, GPS history from a car nav system, etc. There are specific legal procedures for obtaining that kind of information.
