It started when I was three years old, just a regular kid in KG2 going to school. I remember being active and healthy, with no issues at all, Until one day I started to get some pain in my abdomen. At first, it was infrequent and mild, which did not seem serious since it only did happen occasionally. I lost fat as a result of lack of enzymes, and my stool would be leaky, and sometimes I would even pass this oil-like substance as a result, and it would show on my pants without even me realizing it until somebody pointed it out.I used to take enzyme tabs for my digestion and also wore a pamper to school in my 4th and 5th grade. A prestigious doctor from the states had flown in to perform a surgery on another patient, but he also looked into my case, and the team took a decision to operate on me.My dad came into my ward and told me that I was going to have surgery, I remember being unfazed by everything till then and just being on my game boy or PSP through the time, but for the first time I had some fear and started crying for a bit. My dad said that they did nothing and somehow he had an overview of the room where he said that they had a skype call going on as my surgery was taking place like as if some study was going on there while they were at it figuring out what to do.I had the "Why?" lingering in my head and wanted more details as soon as possible since I could not believe that they had no other way to get around and do anything significant.The doctor then added his part and clarified everything; He said what they discovered was that, about 70 new blood vessels had formed around my organ system and that my pains were caused by them pressing upon my pancreas which had shrunk its size compared to the healthy pancreas at my age. Also, because of these formations, my spleen had enlarged to the size of an adult when it had to be 11.0 cms at that point as it would be for any other child. He said that they do not know precisely how these veins came to formation, but the closest possibility was that my liver portal vein was blocked and my bodies reaction to that was to create other pathways to substitute for it — Portal Hypertension leading to pancreatitis and as a result having aches and a messed up organ system.Consequently, I was told to get multiple endoscopies done for the veins to be banded as there is a danger that I could have internal bleeding and could die of it if they burst. I think there was also the possibility of them subsiding on their own over time, but I'm not sure if that was true.A strange thing that happened was that after my surgery day, I never had another stomach ache ever again, and I remember the doctor even saying that I was some living miracle. Now I was back where it all began, Dubai Hospital, after about five years of being transferred from one hospital to another where I was bound to start my Endoscopy after months of being pain-free at home.At this point, there has been a gentle relief, and I am just getting back into the normality of day to day things, and slowly my stitches were dissolving, and I was starting to walk upright and take control of myself. I am going to go to 6th grade and am pain-free for the first time in many years. Even though I have a scar and my wound is still healing, I'm happy that I'm home and not having stomach aches at home or elsewhere. My parents decided to let go of the treatment in Dubai as I was feeling better and they had lost faith in the doctor's here and thought that India would be better to continue this case later on. For that time, I was fine and was slowly getting back into things.For middle school, I had to be transferred to another school since the school I had been going to was only up to 5th grade. Upon entering 6th grade, I was like a touch me not being 17 kgs and was on strict orders from the teachers to other students to not even get me close to harm's way and protected at all times. I wasn't allowed to be active in sports, and my parents were cautious about it. It was only then as a child that I had discovered playing football but could not continue it because of my health, and even when I played I was somehow more sensitive to comments or other children being fitter, but I remember being okay only for that year as I snuck in to play.Now since this was a new school and as a part of my personality, I always wanted to do everything or compete in everything simply because of my curiosity or to satisfy myself of the desire to have fun and even compete with other students. I wanted to prove myself in a new place, my interest was at a peak, but to my dismay, I had gone under a knife and had to take a step back at these things. Because I did not have my basics I could not deal with integers and algebra or anything school threw at me for the rest of the years, and I always missed a commendation certificate because I could never understand maths.Each grade taught that curriculum, and even at tuitions, it was in groups where I could not keep up since even there they worked on lessons taught at that time within the year. So I took some hits in my academics and sports but still managed to be a student to get around 75 to 80% while sucking at math and taking up swimming while also learning to roller skate and ice skate by myself. So it turned out okay.In my middle school, I would still get sick often, but I did not have stomach aches anymore, so my attendance was better, but again lousy health would put me down some places, and I would get routine infections. Fast forward to 9th grade I get flu in India and end up in the hospital next to our residence. I had to receive a blood transfer for platelets, and since we were anyways going to be there for long, doctors had decided to re-open my case, and I was transferred to Seven Hills Hospital in another part of Mumbai. Over there, the doctor checked me out for Wilson's Disease and had a Biopsy done before going over my Endoscopy for banding my veins. And facing anything like a biopsy, (where you are conscious as a string is taken out of your liver as you scream even though it happens quickly it feels like a stab, sting, or a bullet hit you, and you held your breath hard). After an extended period, I felt scared getting the feeling that I might go down that path again. That pain I felt also made me think of how an actual stab would feel like since a small string out of the liver felt so chaotic. No wonder fighters who get kicked to the liver go down in an instant. The Biopsy wasn't the worst of what was bound to happen, I remember taking so many sharp needles and procedures like a champ and not even flinching, but till this day my fear is that of an endoscopy.It starts with having to fast for about 10 hours before the procedure. Once you make it to the bed, you have a mouth guard cut out in between inserted, and an anesthetic sprayed to numb your throat. It feels peculiar since you cannot swallow any of your salivae and everything accumulates as a pool in your mouth as it is wide open because of the guard and you have difficulty trying to breathe.Then the doctor shows you this thin pipe and shoves it in your mouth. It passes through your food pipe and reaches your stomach as you choke on it and it feels like you are going to die. It hurts inside, and you can feel the wire moves around in your stomach as you see the live feed of your insides where the doctors try her best to take as many pictures as possible and repeat the process to start the banding. I think you have to be that way for about 20–30 seconds.In my first session, I survived and did well. The second one I puked on the doctor, but it was my fault as I did not fast properly. The third session was intolerable, and I could not get through the 10 seconds of it, I requested an anesthetist and told them I wanted to be unconscious during the procedure to which they accepted. Finally, I had some of those veins banded and was told to come back and continue these sessions every once in a while whenever I was present in Mumbai.We found out later that the doctor had left Seven Hills Hospital and moved over to another one. By low, I mean to the point where let's say there is a lower limit to platelets that indicates that it is low and you are critically below it. Even my WBC'S were low hence those flu and the rest.Whenever now that I visit a new doctor or have a regular blood test. They see my platelets being around the low line and get agitated to let me know that it is, but in my head, I have this dark chuckle that goes little do they know that it increased from critically low to that point, meaning it's improving.After those three sessions in 9th, my health improved drastically compared to my health improving from 6th grade up to 9th where I had started to gain weight but would still have a lack of taste for other foods and mostly liked lentils and toast. I would also have regular fever's up to that point and slowly over time even after 9th those became fewer and more spread out.My last admission in the hospital was in 2013, Arizona, for a fever where I was there for a couple of hours. Also, my appetite increased, and I started to like more types of food compared to before. I also became active and gained weight and continued schooling normally until I passed out of high school. I then started to work out in 2015, and today I feel like a whole new being where I get sick very rarely, and my platelets have increased to the point of going slightly above the lower limit as well as all the essentials that I lacked before. I now swim, practice archery, workout, and started breakdancing and have been okay through all of these activities.One thing that can get annoying is that if I go for anything else other than this case to the doctor, for example, a muscle spasm and it involves some scan, Chances are 90% of the time that my case will re-open, or the doctor might suspect something like a stone. This situation happened recently where for two months I was out of the gym, break dancing and had a spasm, so I visited the doctor, and he had me x-rayed where he saw an object that he said that might be a stone. I said that it wouldn't be possible, but again since he said that “Had I ever tested that possibility?” to which I thought might as well get it checked out.Back to another CT scan again the radiologist says that I have no stone and it is an enlarged spleen to which I was like oh what a relief (I don't want to deal with something extra as I have hypothyroidism as well) and I am okay with the stuff I have already.So I lost all my stomach aches miraculously in 5th grade itself, and my health too picked up on its own over time. To live with pancreatitis, it was painful; it affected my academics, sports, and came between my goals.My desire to achieve 100 percent in some cases got shunned, and I felt that I was denied a certificate or so during that time. As a child, it felt embarrassing for having the children ridicule me for having my pants yellow, but I understood that they would not get it, and it would look funny. Being at the clinic, though, they realized well that there was something wrong with me. I remember getting cards from each classmate in KG2 so that was sweet and not all of it was bad.Going from being active with those health issues and not practicing karate or running around anymore was a bummer. Since I always wanted to shine in school and not mainly being able to play or develop any skills, gain expertise to compete and bring back a certificate or something for myself felt terrible as well. I also wanted to get at least one commendation in my academics if not for me but my parents even that became hard and I couldn't.Being at the hospital, I did see many patients, and some of them who also became my friends, come and go, so that was bittersweet. My mom was with me throughout my ward all the years, and my dad took care of my younger sister for a long time, so a big thank you for them being there.The core of all this is agonizing pain through the years which takes place in the form of aches, needles, headaches (bit a doc after he did not let me pee midway an MRI or after, but it was intense) and many others physically. Every night where screams could reach the 4th floor of your building if you were to stay on the first floor almost every day, stomach aches of those sorts.The rest is all of the side effects that happen as a result. Some of the physical stuff you become used to. Mentally as a child for some reason, I was okay and did not think much during my time at the hospital. All of the above came to me as a thought whenever I was at school or a later point.Also having my family, game consoles, and cartoons were great too, so I just passed through everything, and it always felt quick, not realizing that I had spent a month or two at the hospital each year.With all this being said, I did find my silver lining and remembered trying my best regardless and working with whatever health, resources, and knowledge; I had to develop myself. If I couldn't play football I saw swimming as a remedy, If I couldn't do well at maths, I kept my other grades up, and when I grew tired of being skimpy, I started to workout.My health I would say was right from 9th to 12th, and now beyond those years, I feel like it is even better. I function like a regular person, work, go to college, and try all sorts of activities and hobbies. I still have a messed up organ system, but no pains and my scar always makes up for a good story or ridiculousness like I had a duel with knight or something. It also looks like the one Kratos has from God Of War so that feel's fantastic. In the end, I am now fine, and everything is excellent. Nobody still knows the base of how this problem came to be, and there has been no further treatment to my case. I also don't think I have the will or the same tolerance to re-open and go through my case again and am happy with the way I am now.
